Kyle Bell CSU
Jacob Hester LSU
Luke Lippincott Nevada
Jayson Bird Idaho
Chad Hall/Kip McCarthy Air Force
Aaron Lesue Utah State
Jake Sharp Kansas
Justin Boyle Duke
Ray Stowers Utah

I guess 9 is it right now, although a few of these guys split carries. We also have several more who are backups, like Toby Gerhart, Kevin Harris, Micah Mosley, etc.

Also, I'm listing strictly RBs, not FBs like Adam Ballard and many others.Edited by: Colonel_Reb

Western Kentucky is in the process of moving up to 1-A and they have been starting a white TB Andrew McCloud and white FB Jared Johnson, although I don't think Andrew is going to start this week. They won't be able to play for a bowl game until 2009, so I guess they would still be counted I-AA.Edited by: Colonel_Reb

with the exception of Kyle Bell and Luke Lippincott, ALL the other backs have to split carries. only 2 of the 117 (or is it 116?) Division One programs use a white runner as the primary feature back.

Its 119 teams, and although the other 7 do split carries to some extent, at least half of them get the majority of carries on their team.

thanks, Colonel. i had a brain fart there with the total schools. heh.

but i've looked at the stats, and while you are correct that they are thebest ball carrier on the team, they don't get the majority. majority = more than half. only Bell meets that standard. and in fact, several of the "starters" don't even have the most carries on their team.

through two games, Bell has 66 of his team's 98 rushing attempts, for a team-leading 237 tough yards behind a struggling offensive line. check out the totals for the other Division 1 tailbacks through two games... it isn't pleasant:

Lippincott (Nevada) is the next closest to being a true feature back. he has 32 of Nevada's 75 carries, which leads the team, for a team-high 135 yards.

Hester (LSU) leadsthe teamwith 26 carries for a team-high 153 yards, but he is one of 7 backs that have 7 or more carries in two games. Quarterback Matt Flynn actually is second on the team with 18.

Boyle (Duke) has 13 carries, tied for the most on the team, for a team-high 49 yards.

Lesue (Utah State) has 23 carries, third most on the team; second on the team with 76 yards.

Sharp (Kansas) has 23 carries, second on the team; narrowly trailing the team leader with 138 yards.

Stowers (Utah) has 17 carries (four more than the number two rusher) for a team-high (but abysmal) 47 yards.

Bird (Idaho) has only 9 carries, which is second on the team, and he is also second in rushing with 47 yards.

Hall and McCarthy (Air Force) also split carries.

so you can see, the situation is quite bleak for our young men.

Injuries have affected some of these guys though. Air Force RB McCarthy is out tonight and Jim Ollis is starting and doing pretty well. The injury situation for some of these teams with white starters is about as strange as that of the white RB going to a school that recruits the all star black RB the next year, really baffling.

I guess I should have said they get the ball more than the other RBs, or are the main ball carrier. Using that criteria, 3 or 4 of them would be so. That is what I was trying to say earlier. Edited by: Colonel_Reb

Jim Ollis got the start for Air Force tonight, and has 15 runs for 124 yards and a TD!

Kevin Harris is getting screwed. He is a lot like Kyle Bell. Wake's staring RB Micah Andrews and backup Josh Adams are sucking, so instead of turning to Harris who lead the team in yards per carry last year they go to some young black recruit..the same old BS.

Will any of these guys get drafted next yr to play TB instead of FB? Bell and Hester are the main hopes I suppose.

well, Hester unfortunately is already a tweener, so in pros it's qite clear he would become a blocking back, at best, the way things are. Bell might have a shot, if he stays healthy. couple of other guys are simply too small for a FB, which might be either their saving grace (since they will have to play RB in NFL) or just the opposite (they won't even make pros, being white runningbacks...)

Maybe Hester can do a Leonard and not listen to the Dick Vermeils of the world and shed body fat and play at a more natural weight. Last years combines coverage was classic zombie talk by Vermeil. As the other announcer talks about Leonard's measurables being better than most prospects all Vermeil could say was yeah but I like him better at fullback....

Watching that game, I was also impressed with TCU's white back Ryan Christian. Anybody catch him?

Yep, Christian is a Sophomore who played very little last season. The last 2 weeks he has been used quite a bit by Texas Christian, and last night had a team high in carries and was second in receptions. He is their go to man right now, which is pretty cool!

looks like Kyle got injured in the first quarter, second rams series was all John Mosure, who is definitely establishing himself as their number two guy.

i hope Bell comes back into the game and that it's nothing serious! is anybody watching/listening to the game?

i just found a live feed

Bell is back in. let's see what he can do tonight, so far he had zero success: 6 runs for 9 yards...

Thanks backrow. Kyle is by far my favorite college football player. He is special and I want him to follow Leonards footsteps to being a running back in the nfl. Go Rams!

Hopefully CSU can make something happen in the second half. Its awesome to see John Mosure getting the carries. Coach Lubick said a couple of weeks ago he wanted to get him more carries, and he told the truth. Johnson has proven himself to be ineffectual on the ground, so it makes sense to let the future of the CSU backfield get some carries.

yeah, Mosure actually looked good, but they totally limited Kyle so far, and it doesn't look like anything will change.

No carries for Mosure or Bell through the first half today. Gartrell Johnson who was named MWC player of the week last week, is getting all the carries today.

Kyle ended up getting more carries than Johnson in the second half but nothing for Mosure.

Kyle Bell had time in 4.5s during CSU Pro Day. he also benched 225 29 (!!!) times!

he might still get a shot in the NFL, who knows.

DraftDaddy has linked to this information, as well. in fact, Kyle Bell ran much faster than black teammate Gartrell Johnson who was invited to the Combine and ran in the 4.7s. Bell also jumped better, was quicker in the agility drills, and exploded in the bench press with 29 reps of 225-pounds.

here is a link to Gil Brandt's NFL blog with official pro day results. and here is what he has to say about Bell:
Kyle Bell â€â€￾ The running back measure 6-feet 5/8-inches, 233 pounds. He ran a 4.55 and 4.54 in the 40-yard dash. Bell posted a 34-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-7 broad jump, a 4.26 short shuttle and 6.99 three-cone drill. He put up 20 bench press reps and really looked good catching the ball in position drills.

the 20 reps is a typo. the correct number is actually 29! that is validated below.

here is another link regarding the CSU pro day, and here is the pertinent information:
Running back Kyle Bell, by virtue of his last name, was the first Ram up in each drill. He set quite a standard, including an unofficial time of 4.54 seconds in the 40 and 29 repetitions on the bench press. His bench press score would have tied for second- most among running backs at the NFL combine.

Bell, who missed the 2006 season with a torn ACL and backed up Johnson last fall, said he is in the best shape of his life and hopes his numbers will show that he is healthy.

"I worked each day to put myself in position to play at the next level," Bell said.

it's usually said that it takes at least two years for most athletes to get back to normal after a knee injury as severe as Bell's was. let's hope this impressive athlete is finally back to normal and will get a shot somewhere.

Man I hope he gets a shot. I mean in a fair world he'd be a high priority free agent in the least. If he were black a team might even take a shot with a 6th or 7th round pick on Bell considering how dominant he was before his injury.

I hope he has in fact fully recovered (part of it is confidence in your knee too) and he puts on a stunning performance in a team's NFL training camp and makes it very difficult for the NFL to simply blacklist him for his race and injury history.

Even if Bell gets a Practice Squad opportunity at this point I would be happy. According to some of you folks here he looked a little better this year than last in his limited opportunity; so lets just hope Bell is ready to put on a show!
