diminishing black talent pool?

Don has stated several times that he sees evidence that the black population is producing fewer and fewer talented athletes. maybe he's on to something...

please pardon me, it's going to take a moment for me to get to the point.

for the past decade or so, Gonzaga has been one of my two favorite basketball teams. they earned their national reputation the hard way: on the court. they built their program up from nothing on a foundation of under-recruited, hungry, local white kids with BIG chips on their shoulders. however, since the high point of Gonzaga basketball, when an all-white lineup caught the nation's attention by knocking off three major-conference powers, including 1998 Final Four participant Stanford, en route to an Elite Eight berth in the 1999 NCAA Tournament and a narrow last-minute loss to eventual champ UConn, Gonzaga's roster has grown ever darker.

and now that Gonzaga has become a household name, the Zags have begun to almost exclusively target "real" athletes for their basketball team. for example, all 4 scholarships for the 2007-08 season went to non-white players: juco transfer Ira Brown (black) and freshmen Austin Daye (mulatto), Robert Sacre (mulatto), and Steven Gray (mulatto).

the darkening trend took a slight slowdown with the 2008-09 signing class, as two of the three signees were white: freshmen Grant Gibbs and Andy Poling, both of whom are redshirting this season. only guard Demetri Goodson was black. however, it seems the decision to ignore the gene pool that brought them success has once again picked up speed.

i mean, it must seem obvious that Gonzaga's recruiters have to REALLY want an all-black recruiting class to sign the one they reeled in...

of their 4 commitments for 2009-10, Gonzaga has a black kid from Minnesota, a black "German", and a black "Canadian" originally from Sudan.

wait, that's just 3 players. i almost forgot their 4th "Canadian." i hope you enjoy the lovely "Canadian" family photo.

Gonzaga obviously wants to become a black program, but in order to do so they literally had to scour the globe to find 4 blacks worthy of a scholarship. what other reason could explain their having to go all the way to Minnesota and Germany and Sudan-via-Canada?

maybe Don is right, and American blacks are no longer producing many athletes who are fit for more than running from the cops.

this, of course, doesn't hit the main question. which is, why in the hell is Gonzaga going black?!?

I dis agree with the black talent pool shrinking. During the 1980s the crack wars the talent is probably lowar than today. I think the reason Gonzaga is getting blacks from places like germany is that most typical american black players probly don't want to go to a small religious school in an white part of the country.

They also don't have the marks. Let's hope Gonzaga doesn't go the Georgetown route to the big time. Also Zags don't get the best white talent(coming out of high school) anyway. They generally get diamonds in the rough, all of the best talent no matter what their race will try and play in one of the big conferences. Edited by: white is right

I don't think any scholarships should be given to non US citizens, especially at state schools. I don't know what a country is for if you give away something to foreigners that every kid in the country wants that plays basketball--a scholarship.Why should I pay taxes and have a "black" German or white for that matter, get a scholarship. Foreign schools can give scholarships if they want to.That idiot Calipari at Memphis wants to recruit Chinese players now.


All the foreign players is just one more sign this country is being given away. These are not jobs citizens don't want. You don't have to have all the "best" players to have a league. College football is more interesting to me even though they are not the best teams.

Iheard an interview with the new Seattle Major League Soccer coach and he sent his scouts to Africa and South America because he says they have a"Wealth of talent" there.There is no reciprocity with Africa .They are not going to provide places for US displaced players to play because most of their leagues pay next to nothing.I am tired of seeing African players displace European players in European leagues.


Immigration should be limited to things that matter. Such as world class scientists like Fermi and Engineers like Werner Von Braun.

The Zags have a history of bringing foreign players in like Aussies Paul Rogers,Axel Dench and Kiwi Calum Macleod as well as Brit Germayne Forbes,Africans Mamory Diallo and Abby Kuso and Brazilian J.P.Batista but the cool thing was the players of colour were usually Juco's and went to two year schools and the Zags would only have them for their junior and senior seasons.I'm talking about guys like Anthony Reason,Alex Hernandez and Tony Skinner only Ronny Turiaf was given a 4 year scholy but these days the bruthas are getting the whole deal and Mark Few is bending over backwards to bring them in.It took Jeremy Pargo two attempts at his entrance exam to make it to Spokane and the guy seems as dumb as a rock.This is why I'm losing interest.

I think abortion should be a states' rights issue rather than decreed by the Supreme Court, but here aresome interesting statistics I found in the latest issue of American Renaissance that bolster my perception that the black talent pool is shrinking:


"Black. . .American women have abortions at five times the rate. . . of white American women. Fully 43 percent of black American pregnancies end in abortion. The availability of abortion is undoubtedly the main (and maybe the only) reason why the fertility rate of black American women between the ages of 15 and 44 declined between 1980 and 2005 from 91 to 67 births per 1,000 women while the fertility rate of white American women declined during the same period only from 62 to 58 births per 1,000 women.. .


"Indeed, John Donohue and Steven Levitt have argued in a series of persuasive articles that the availability of abortion 'and the resulting radical decline in the birth rate of poor, unmarried, teenage girls' has been a crucial factor in the decline of the American crime rate over the past several decades. . . "


The vast majority ofblack athletes come from ghettos, meaning fromthe type of black female who is now much more likely to have abortions rather than keep popping them out every nine months. That, among other factors,has to have an affect on the Caste System's beloved main source of affletes.

My theory is that the talented black athletes are forsaking sports to concentrate on their academic studies to prepare for professional careers.

take a look at all the foreign-born blacks who are filling American college basketball rosters. isn't it weird that so many foreign blacks are needed if the American black is so dominant?
