Here is the official thread for next weekends World Champs. The sprints start on August 4th for the
men and women. The 100 meter heats will be highly contested. I'm hoping at least 1 or 2 or our men and women can make the finals. Any medals would be a bonus. I would have to say Guliyev is our best chance
at the moment on the mens side and Schippers on the womens side. Good luck to all of our athletes!

I'm happy to see Athletics Australia have added young Riley Day to the team for the 200 metres. She's just turned 17 and just won the Commonwealth Junior 200 in Nassau 2-3 weeks ago (and won silver in the 100). She has run 23.26 this year so it'd just be good to see her get international experience in the rounds. She's tough and doesn't seem to mind running against the big guns.

Interestingly, Australia easily won the track and field medal count against all the Commonwealth nations - it's just that we lose loads of our juniors to other sports as the talent scouts come sniffing around

we have 4 football codes. AFL (Aussie Rules), Rugby Union and Rugby League throw big money around. Football (soccer) probably no so much.
That seems to be a game many play until they are old enough to defy their mothers' safety concerns and play one of the more physical "big three".

don't have a clue - 2016 started the season with 10.16 and didn't run again - this season a 10.32 and a 10.22 then out again. He must be jinxed - I don't expect his body to handle a career in sprinting unless he's happy with 10.4/10.5

MM at least your country has several fellas capable of running under 10.30, Canada has none... The one kid who has lowered his PB from 10.78 to 10.42 in 2 months after finishing up his University career is talking about leaving track as he does not feel he can compete with the faster guys in Canada(negros) His form is terrible but has all the tools to run in the very low 10's if he had a coach who knew what they were doing.

I find it sad that I have to root for athletes mostly from other countries aside from my own as 90% of Canada's track athletes are negros... I guess I will be forcusing on Derek Drouin/Mike Mason in the high jump, Liz Gleadle in the Javelin, Sage Watson/Noel Montcalm in the 400mH, Tim Nedow in SP and Johnathan Cabral in the hurdles if he is able to compete. Cant root for Melissa Bishop as she is a mudshark and Shawn Barber is a gay druggie...

Volko (10.25) out, Reus (10.25) out, Millar (10.31) out, Hssan Taftian (10.34) out -
So no Caucasians left but 3 Japanese , 2 Chinese and 1 Korean made it through the rounds with 1 Japanese and 1 Chinese looking possible finalists. Let's see how they cope with the semis

I think Volko went out too hard in the opening heat. He ran a new national record of 10.15 but that seemed to gas him. It could be he was nervous too. It's such a step up in the level of competition. It's a shame about Julian Reus. It has to be a psychological situation with him. Too bad as he is physically gifted but not mentally tough in int'l meets and big championships. I will root for the asian sprinters too. Wish Guliyev would have tried for the double.

Schippers, Lalova, Horn, Luckenkemper, Swoboda are the women who can make it through tonight.
Not sure Swoboda's in that sub 11.20 form and I'm concerned Luckenekemper may do a "Reus" though - hope not!

I don't think we give Bingtian Su enough credit for what he has done.

This is a guy who seems to race exclusively against world class competition. I mean every meet he runs in is a Diamond League stop. He seems cool as a cat and isn't phased by his competition level. Lemaitre would do well to replicate him mentally.

I hope Su is able to medal at the world level before his career is done. He is the first sub-10 Asian sprinter and now I am sure many will follow in his steps.

Yeah!! Volko with ease. I see a PB coming.

The commentator mentioned Volko played soccer when he was younger. I would encourage soccer early on verses football for any of you gentlemen who intend to have children and have any interest in athletics. Both my boys played soccer when they were young and learned great footwork skills and both were really quick/fast. I've never seen a slow athlete that moved from soccer to another sport. Thanks for the post, limitless.

it was great watching the 2 american negros choke in the mens long jump. As well I enjoyed watching Canada's 2 negro sprinters choke in the 100m :)

Does anybody know why Volko had to run in the preliminary heat before the regular heats?
Obviously it was too much for him to have to run twice within hours, while others only had to run once.
Still he did great in his preliminary heat, running a 10.15 NR.

Agree that Bingtan Su deserves a lot of credit.
He doesn't hide from anyone and he always runs under 10.10. Good Luck to him.

Well there wasn't much to see in the 100m heats, as most of our guys chose not to run, and save themselves for the 200m, or didn't make their country's team in the 100m.
No Lemaitre. No Gemili. No Tortu. No Guliyev. No Kilty. No Hortelano.

Yeah jacknyc. It was the most boring opening heats I've ever seen. Very sad that the majority of our guys were not there
to at least give it a run. Also the fact that no one made the semi finals out of the few that tried. I really think Volko would
have if he didn't have to run twice today. He is young and it's been a long year but he runs in the 10.15ish range like clock
work wind or no wind. He is very consistant considering he is only 20 years of age. Volko & Tortu make the future exciting. Not we just need to get a few more young guys to step up to their level.

I'm under the assumption Volko ran in the prelims because he did not have the IAAF standard in the event.

Guliyev's absence from the 100m is very disappointing. With deGrasse out and several other false starters, I am certain he would be making the final this year and clocking another sub-10.

I wondered about this as there were some decent sprinters in there.
Apparently the preliminary round consists of sprinters who had NOT achieved the standard (by due date??) but are INVITED to compete.
I like that - the tall Afghani in Volko's prelim ran a PB 11.13 and will never get a chance to compete on the international stage or even get a decent coach probably. Yet his 10.9 hand time is very fast for an amateur with limited resources in a war torn country. What a memory for him!
Obviously not trained in all phases of sprinting but just a fast top end guy. He'd be a winger if he played rugby.
Others invited (eg Volko) could conceivably make it through into the semis on a good day

yes, he's certainly the best Asian sprinter there's ever been and is one tough competitor. He ran a race recently in 9.92 (+2.4) a while back beating DeGrasse and others. Second to Ronnie Baker.
Then I checked other youtubes of his races and he generally performs really well. None of the top tier can afford to take him lightly.
I'm glad he's broken 10 twice legally, once with a negative wind. That's no fluke
He should go down in history as a TOP SPRINTER if even for just breaking the mould. I wonder how many thousands of Chinese kids will look at his achievements and think "I want to do that".
