America's biggest teacher and principal cheating scandal unfolds in Atlanta
At least 178 teachers and principals in Atlanta Public Schools cheated to raise student scores on high-stakes standardized tests, according to a report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

This appears to be the largest of dozens of major cheating scandals, unearthed across the country. The allegations point an ongoing problem for US education, which has developed an ever-increasing dependence on standardized tests.

The report on the Atlanta Public Schools, released Tuesday, indicates a "widespread" conspiracy by teachers, principals and administrators to fix answers on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), punish whistle-blowers, and hide improprieties.

On its face, the investigation tarnishes the 12-year tenure of Superintendent Beverly Hall, who was named US Superintendent of the Year in 2009 largely because of the school system's reported gains â€" especially in inner-city schools. She has not been directly implicated, but investigators said she likely knew, or should have known, what was going on. In her farewell address to teachers in June, Hall for the first time acknowledged wrongdoing in the district, but blamed other administrators.

In Atlanta it is largely a negro problem. However, as the pressure mounts for teachers and administrators to have their students perform up to par on the ever increasing number of standardized tests, things like this are going to become more and more common, imho.

This same thing happened in Houston a few years ago to a school with a predominat mixture of blacks and mestizos. No surprise, no surprise at all. When the test becomes the measure of all the test will be fudged.

You can't alchemize a negro or mey-hee-can into a White person, so the only options left are lowering the standards, cheating, or failure.

Yes, the "dumbing down" of whats left of this country!

The "leadership" of this CRCT cheating outfit are all groidians. Like in the workplace, the "ed-yu-muh-kay-shun" bar is lower to the point of a limbo contest (to accomodate the sub-races).

The MSM and Establishment place so much value on closing the persistent gap between the races, and they are soooooo emotionally desparate for some sign that their alchemy is finally working, it's a wonder this story EVER got published! How long did they know?

I doubt the story would be told if not for "new media." It took years for the MLK Papers' curators to admit to the serial plagiarism they knew King had committed. It was only the impending release of the info via the Wall Street Journal that the MLK Cult to 'fess up.

This cheating scandal is getting more serious. The Atlanta cheating scandal is likely the largest in scope in U.S history in terms of the number of people involved. For twenty years, reports of cheating from across the nation are continuously aggrandizing. The number of cases has exploded in recent years, with new reports nearly every week. And recently, a news broke that SAT cheating ring leads to arrests in New York. This is reality and this is serious. What's most troubling about this argument is that it demeans the integrity and honor of America's educators, the majority of whom don't believe that the pressure to perform is a license to cheat. Now, what should be done? Attention should be paid to how tests are administered and efforts to create useful tests that will not lead to fraud must be emphasized. With this, I believe it could taper off cheating.

The cheating at schools is just symtomatic of the FedGovs involvement in attempting to set one-size-fits-all national standards. Primarily the linking of funds and incentives to test scores, you simply follow the money. Schools and school districts will do most anything if it means more $$, and high test scores accomplish that.

Of course, the standardization tests are also bad for the students when the goal is simply high scores, as many schools will "teach to the test", rather than simply teaching the subject. The student then might get a good test score, but will have learned very little about the subject of the class. Incidentally, when this subject comes up, I always get a picture in my mind of "compassionate conservative" Repub Prez Bush grinning and yucking it up with Ted "the swimmer" Kennedy over the passage of the massive federal intrusion into schools "No Child Left Behind" act.
