The Aussies looked great in their pre-Olympic friendlies, but stunk up the court in their first two Olympic pool games, losing to Croatia (by 15) and Argentina (by 17). They finally turned it around today, thrashing Iran.
Huge game on Friday night against the Russians (tip time 8:15 PST), which is basically an elimination game for both teams, entering with only 1 win each.
Bogut has underwhelmed, averaging only 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 block a game, while leading the team in turnovers. They are being carried by their 5'11 colored PG Pat Mills and their 6'6 SG Brad Newley.
Newley is fun to watch, with great shooting and strong finishing. He was an Australian league Rookie of the Year, and a Greek league all-star, and was drafted in 2007 by the Rockets, so maybe someday we will see him play in the States. As for now, he has re-signed for 2008 with a Greek club.
If they can beat Russia, they will set themselves up for a rematch with USA in the first playoff round, which would be great. So far this summer, including the Olympics, Australia has given Team USA their toughest match.
