Fat Black Linemen

Over the past few seasons, a real trend has emerged in the NFL. We now
see incredibly fat black linemen on every team, with huge guts and
butts and little discernable musle tone. The Philadelphia Eages under
white-hating Buddy Ryan first featured this kind of player, notably the
late Jerome Brown and the allegedly great Reggie White, whose gut grew
fatter every year he played. I simply refuse to believe these waddling
pigs, who look for all the world to be incredibly out of shape, are
exceptional athletes. If they were really "working out" in any
meaningful way, there is no way they'd be showing that much visible
fat. The Packers presently have one of the most ridiculous looking
players of all time- Grady Jackson, planted in the middle of their
defensive line. Who would have thought they'd find someone more
obscenely fat than Gilbert Brown? Anyhow, wonder if any of you out
there noticed this and were bothered by it as much as I am. The pitiful
physical condition of these players makes a mockery of the chatter from
the lame "journalists" about how "hard" training camp is, how the
players have to work out all year now, and similar butt-kissing lies
and propaganda.

Don has pointed out in the past how black defensive lineman are also almost always fat pigs in a similar manner. But white defensive lineman are almost never out of shape porkers. In fact nearly all white defensive lineman are well built athletes. Unfortunately we have Tony Sarguso waddling around the sidelines during telecasts creating the image that that is the typical white lineman.

The idea behind using big fat linemen often given by announcers is that they "clog running and passing lanes." Gee, I thought quick, athletic linemen could do that and more. And you're right that almost all are in pitiful condition. It's just one of many things about the NFL that makes one wonder if anywhere close to the best talent is actually being employed.

It will probably take the death of a few more obese linemen, ala Korey Stringer, before this ridiculous and despicable trend is altered in the copycat NFL.

Actually, I should have said there were a few chubby, out of shape
"athletes" in the NFL back in the 1980s. I went to Redskins' Park in
1987, to join what I naively thought would be throng of outraged fans
during the player strike. Of course, my friend and I were the only
anti-player fans there. We watched a bunch of complete idiots bringing
the striking players coffee and donuts, as if they were impoverised
coal miners or something. Ridiculous. Anyhow, what shocked me was the
appearance, up close and in person (and out of uniform) of these
players. Daryl Grant was a starting DT for the Redskins then, and he
was just a short mass of blubber. Whatever muscle was on him was
invisible. Jeff Bostic was the starting Center, and as I stood next to
him I couldn't believe how much the team/league/media was lying about
his (and most of the other players) sizes. I'm about 5'9 and 175;
Bostic was listed at 6'2 and 275. I'm telling you there wasn't a dime's
worth of difference between us height-wise, and the only difference in
weight was his higher degree of fat, especially his gut. Only a few of
the players looked like they worked out regularly. It was an
eye-opener, and whenever the size of these players is bandied about, I
remain skeptical because of my personal experience.

I've also noticed that they often aren't "larger than life" when you see them up close. The last Steeler I saw in person was Hines Ward, who is average height and fairly scrawny. You'd never suspect he's a pro athlete passing him on the street. That said, I have a lot of respect for him as a player. He's the hardest working, toughest receiver in the NFL, the "black" Ed McCaffrey if you will. His work ethic may come from his Oriental mother, his half Asian background rarely being publicized.

Jerome Bettis is another one. He looks like a reject from the local beer league softball team, short and fat. He's never worked out much or tried to lose weight, and never has had to. He wouldn't have even been given a shot at being a blocking fullback if he was white, much less turn out to be a Hall of Fame tailback.

Great posts. I completely agree. Black players are allowed to be completely out of shape. These are not the best players in the world. I've noticed this trend since the 80"s when the rage was the 300+ pound lineman and its grown since. I find the NFL to be poor evaluators of talent. They believe that blubbery weight is equivalent to strength when is just blubber. They need to get their mindlessheads out of their stat sheets and actually watch people play. The Denver Broncos, I believe, have the lightest offensive line and are almost always one of the leaders in rushing every year no matter who runs the ball. The Jerome Bettis comment is right on track. I really believe that you could put together a team of rejected white players and dominate the league (I might have a black punter just for spite).

Not only are these lineman fat and out of shape they play like crap because of it. Ive been watching ,highly praised, Viking Bryan MCkinney at left tackle. They always talk about how he moves his feet so well for a big guy. The fact is that this guys feet are glued to the ground, i've seen him get run around so many times it aint even funny! Yet the media keeps glorifying this big FAT cow. When is the media gonna wise up and see things for what they are, in this case fat, out of shape cows!

The announcer was praising DL Shaun Rodgers of the Lions for his intelligence in breaking up a screen pass, he also complimented him on his athleticism. i watched the reply and Rodgers was able to make the play because he was so fat and tired that he trailed the other rushing lineman after the QB so he was in the right spot to make a play. What a laugh!

Have to mention Warren Sapp. This big fat idiot was about the 3rd or
4th best player on his OWN defense during his alleged prime. It was an
insult to the intelligence to watch his huge gut and butt jiggle
whenever he made a move on the field, while simultaneously hearing the
jock-sniffing announcers rave about this "athleticism." IMHO, Derrick
Brooks should have received the recognition that Sapp hogged up. Brooks
is a genuinely great player, but because he doesn't commit crimes or
talk infantile trash all the time, the media ignore him. They want the
loud, obnoxious, and almost always very overrated black jerk. Keyshawn
Johnson, Ray Lewis, Terrell Owens (okay, he does produce, but NO ONE
dererves the hype this guy gets), Chad Johnson, Deion Sanders, etc. On
the other hand, nice guys who behave themselves and are far better
producers on the field, like Curtis Martin, Sean Alexander, Marvin
Harrison, etc. are rarely hyped and are never sought for arrogant,
ungrammatical sound bites.

I remember White lineman like Bill Fralic,Howie Long,Jerry Sherk,Merlin Olsen and Mike Webster very strong-well built men who looked liked football players. Not these big fat slobs with there gut hanging over there belt and suffering from high blood pressure.
