Sosa back to NL Central?

Could Sammy Sosa be returning to play right field in Wrigley Field? No, not as a member of the Cubs, but as a member of the Pirates. An article from a Dominican news service said Pittsburgh is interested in signing Sosa.

According to the article, after signing Joe Randa as its third baseman, the Pirates want to sign one more free agent this winter and now that first choice Eric Byrnes has a tentative agreement with Arizona, Sosa is the primary target.

But a report in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said there is no indication general manager Dave Littlefield wants the 37-year-old Sosa, who had a star-crossed 2005 season in which he batted .221 with 14 home runs for Baltimore and was tailed by controversy.

Stay tuned.

Hopefully that article was written before Pittsburgh signed Jeremy Burnitz the other day. Sosa is washed up, not to mention being a clubhouse cancer.

The Pirates should be one of the whitest teams in baseball in '06, a nice change of direction. They finally have a productive farm system too after 20 years of producing nothing, and almost all of the up and coming young players are white. One thing I worry about though is signing too many older players. Joe Randa is 36 and Burnitz will be 37 in April.

Yeah, it was written before they signed Burnitz. I wanted to give Pirate fans a scare though.
