LOS ANGELES -- Former NFL defensive back Darryll Lewis was arrested after leading police on a 30-minute chase that ended with five officers forcefully dragging him to the ground, authorities said Tuesday.

Lewis, 36, was arrested Monday for investigation of evading arrest, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He was being held on $75,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.

California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop Lewis, a 10-year NFL veteran, who was driving alone in a black pickup truck Monday afternoon. He was driving in the carpool lane and refused to pull over, CHP Officer Edmund Zorrilla said.

A short time later, a CHP officer used his squad car to spin Lewis' vehicle around. As the officers tried to corner Lewis, he drove away and escaped, authorities said.

Lewis was stopped again outside his parents' home in West Covina but he wouldn't comply with commands from officers, Zorrilla said. A TV videotape showed Lewis dragging five officers who attempted to subdue him. Police eventually were able to control Lewis and arrest him.

Zorrilla said the struggle could have been fueled by alcohol, which was in Lewis' system and crystal methamphetamine that was found in his truck.

"One of the officers felt that his arm was going to be broken," Zorrilla said. "It was like pulling back an arm of steel. He was a strong guy."

Lewis went to Arizona and was drafted in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft by the then-Houston Oilers. He played for the Oilers from 1991-98 and was chosen to play in the Pro Bowl after the 1995 season. He spent two seasons with the San Diego Chargers, but was released by the Denver Broncos in 2001.
