<DIV style="TEXT-ALIGN: justify">CONWAY, Ark _ The University of Central Arkansas has suspended five football players for a violation of team rules, according to Athletic Director Brad Teague.

Freshman running back Curtis Marks, freshman defensive back Henry Minor, freshman defensive back Carlos Smith, sophomore defensive back Phillip Johnson and freshman defensive lineman Norvel Gabriel have been suspended indefinitely by head coach Clint Conque on the first day of spring practice.

"These five student-athletes are suspended from the team indefinitely, pending further investigation,' Teague said on Friday. "It's unfortunate that young people make mistakes and make bad decisions, but we appreciate the swift manner in which Coach Clint Conque handled the situation. This is the manner in which we handle things at UCA.'

"We regret that student-athletes sometimes make poor choices but we are continually working to educate our student-athletes about the choices they make daily.'

Marks, from Memphis, played in nine games last season, rushing for 132 yards on 24 carries. Johnson, also from Memphis, was the Bears' No. 7 tackler last season with 51 stops. Minor, from Baton Rouge, La., played in all 11 games last fall and finished with 20 tackles.

Smith, from Muskogee, Okla., had four tackles in nine games, while Gabriel, from Jacksonville, redshirted last season.

The Bears, who finished second in the Southland Conference last season, open spring practice at 3:45 p.m. today. </TD></TR></T></T></TABLE>Edited by: Colonel_Reb
