Allegations of excessive force prompt changes at ECU

Associated Press

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina University police chief says the school will use only local officers after complaints of excessive force after fans charged the field to celebrate the Pirates' upset of West Virginia.

Scott Shelton said the department had completed an initial inquiry and identified police officers and sheriff's deputies from various agencies shown in video clips of incidents after the game. He said the school has forwarded that information to the appropriate agencies, which will determine possible discipline.

Shelton did not publicly identify the officers, citing personnel laws and regulations. University police worked the game along with police from Greenville, Winterville and Kinston, and sheriff's deputies from Pitt and Lenoir counties. ECU is located in Pitt county.

Shelton said in a news release that the school will use only agencies from within Pitt county the rest of the season.

Video shows some fans who ran onto the field following the Pirates' 24-3 win over the then-No. 8 Mountaineers were knocked down and roughed up by authorities.

ECU chancellor Steve Ballard on Monday said at news conference that authorities will be held accountable, calling the incidents "the most disappointing and shocking I've witnessed in my more than four years here."

The win propelled the Pirates to No. 14 nationally, their first appearance in the Top 25 since 1999.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Patrick Pinkney will be back for a sixth season at East Carolina.

School officials said Friday that the NCAA granted a request for an extra year for the quarterback. He missed all of 2005 while recovering from a shoulder injury and multiple surgeries.

Pinkney completed 61 percent of his passes last season for 2,675 yards and 13 touchdowns. His efficient play helped the Pirates upset Virginia Tech and West Virginia, and their Conference USA title was the program's first league championship since 1976.

The senior and son of former East Carolina defensive back Reggie Pinkney said he is looking forward "to being in a position to help contribute to a new set of goals in 2009."
