Not a great year for the young or sort of young rising white centerfielders. Chris Duffy who has missed most of the season will likely be let go by Pirates who never seemed to like him in the first place. Duffy plays great defense and has lots of speed. They have been auditioning a black player now. Rocco Baldelli once touted as a future star has suffered a lot of serious leg injuries and the Devil Rays look to be done with him as BJ Upton grabbed the job. Eric Reed a speed demon for the Marlins has never hit in the bigs but then again he has never gotten a full trial. Much like Jason Tyner of the Twins if he sticks in the bigs he may end up a role player. Tyner and Reed are good examples of skinny speedy white guys with no power at all who can't make the grade. But Juan Pierre and other blacks fit that mold and many of them are enjoying long healthy careers? There is something about white speed that turns off people.
The only young bright spot is the play of Josh Anderson of the Astros. He is a speed guy who has done well in his brief call up. Maybe he is their answer to CF in 2008. Reggie Willits has shown some speed for the Angels but he has been in LF most of the time.
