I believe Yelena is female athlete of year. Astounding number of world records in the pole vault in 2004 she won world indoor and olympics in style. Unbelievable athlete--decathlete type--she has the whole 9 yards. Speed, dexterity, strengh, hops and explosion. Congrats to her and Roger--(see tennis) as my personal picks for athletes of the year.

Let me add that in the IAAF voting results for Track athlete of year--female--Yelena Slesarenko finished third for her great high jumping--and perhaps the greatest single moment at the olympics--a smallish woman leaping so high I was stunned. In fourth was Swede Carolina Cluft who could kick most NFL player"s asses. And in seventh was Long jump/triple jumper Yulya Nesterenko of Russia. She won Long jump at Athens. All Russians medaled in that event!

Also not on the list but Deserve a mention is Yuliya Nesterenko--100 meter champ in Athensand I would like to add young Ivet Lalova, a lithe youngBulgarian sprinter who just missed out on medals in 100 and 200 meters. Keep an eye on her. She is not bulked up and is very pretty. Not to mention has great raw speed. Announcers made a grave error when insinuating Ivet was on drugs. They blew it--they misconstrued the contoversy "surrounding her" was not about drugs but the prospect of running a fast but flawed time in an earlier track meet. Carl Lewis' sister was part of the screwup. Come on people get the facts straight.

Ivet Lalova is one of my favorites. She has her own web site.I will post it soon.Yelena is as good as they come.
They Russian women must have one of the best all around
track teams out there.I enjoy watching all of them.I'm
anxious for some of the Russian men sprinters like Roman
Smirnov to catch up.Good job sunshine. It's nice to see
someone with more track knowledge since most people don't
follow it very closely.
