Since this kid was the second faster junior sprinter in the world, I feel he deserves his own thread. His p.b. of 10.30 is very good for an 18 year old. We will keep track of him as he has 4 years to mature before the next olympics.

Van Der Vyer comes from a family of sprinters. His brother, Marthinus took bronze in the 110M HH at the World Youth Championships in 2001 and his mother was a leading sprinter for SA in the 70s. Wilhelm is definitely someone to watch...

I like the picture from the SA Track Site Article. He is really flying there as you can tell by the picture. Wilhelm looks very powerful for a kid barely out of high school. You can tell he has great genetics in his family. I've always thought it was sad that the Great Valeriy Borzov, Armin Harry, and even Allan Wells, never had any boys that inherited their sprinting genes. Van Der Vyer reminds me so much of Nagel except he is built a little more muscular. Nagel had athletic genes in his family as well.

That's one tanned Swede....

Seriously that could be the son of Houston Mctear. I know he settled in Sweden and married a Swede. The kid doesn't like mixed race though.

Any one see a Van der Vyver siting anywhere? I haven't heard of him even competiting once yet. I wonder what is going on. Maybe he is busy with school but this kid is too talented to not be competing. Let's hope he returns by summmer at the latest. Wilhelm and Lemaitre are two bright hopes for the future because of their age.

It can be so hard to get info about South African Athletes. I did notice however that the youngster Wilhelm ran a time of 10.36 recently into a headwind for his first race of the year. This is from the IAAF website. That is a great opener. He is only 19 years of age and he should get into the 10.20's at least this year if not better. Here is the link.

The age group of lemaitre, Vander vyver, schwabb, Blum, and Aaron Stubbs looks very promising.

Hopefully the older but still very young group of pickering, cerutti, kuc, and connaugton can break ten and make the job easier for tthe younger guys, and a medal would be great. Pickering is the only medal threat out of this group I think, but the younger goup is filled with threats.
