I noticed here in Australia we have 5 x 8metre+ long jumpers and another
7.97 man battling for an olympic position this year.

Now, I know that's not in the U.S. league but it's a lot of depth from a
nation of 20 million mostly white folk.. i can't think of anyone else with
that depth.

White men can jump!

This post is closely related to the "Boise State Jumpers" post, the point being that whites can be outstanding horizontal jumpers.

They are all white.

Interviews : Ryan Grinnell of Boise State

by Tom Borish (1/30/08)

Grinnell leaped to 53-04.50 in the triple jump this season (BSU Media Relations)
1. You recently earned the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 53-4.5 in the triple jump. How does it feel to get that qualifier out of the way and does it put less pressure on you to perform the rest of the season?

It feels unreal! It really took me a few days for me to realize everything that happened at the meet. I think one of the reasons I was able to hit the automatic standard was because the competition was phenomenal. All of the jumpers at Boise State were anticipating the meet. We knew there was going to be great competition and it inspired us to train hard. Coach Petros (the jumps coach) did a really great job of preparing us for the meet.

2. The performance also met the Olympic qualifying standard. How excited are you to try and make the U.S. Olympic team this summer?

I think every track athlete dreams of making the Olympic team and representing their country. Words can't describe how excited I was when I hit the qualifying standard. I am really excited for the opportunity to try out for the US team, but at the same time I don't want to think too much about it. I have to focus on finishing the rest of the indoor season and the outdoor season. I just want to improve one meet at a time and not get too ahead of myself. I want to keep improving my marks in the jumps and gaining more confidence in myself. Most importantly, I want to savor every moment I experience and remember it for the rest of my life.

Diakonikolas and Kafourou Earn NCAA Provisional Standards in the Long Jump

Release: 02/01/2008

NAMPA, Idaho - Boise State University jumpers continued to pace the Broncos' track and field team throughout the indoor season and this time it was Savvas Diakonikolas' turn. Diakonikolas recorded a distance of 25-8 (7.82m) in the men's long jump Friday, Feb. 1, at the United Heritage Invitational en route to winning the event.

The mark placed Diakonikolas second on the Broncos' all-time indoor list and was the top performance in the long jump in the Western Athletic Conference this season, nearly seven inches longer than his nearest competitor. The mark is also an NCAA provisional qualifying standard (7.50m) and is 0-1.25 (.03m) off the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 7.85m. This was the fourth longest mark in the NCAA for the long jump this season, as three others are tied for first with a 25-9.25 (7.84m).

Eleni Kafouru earned another NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the long jump with a season-best mark of 20-3.75 (6.19m). Kafourou topped her previous season-best of 19-11.75 (6.09m) to win the women's long jump.

Feb 2nd 2008. Chris Tomlinson broke his own British indoor long jump record by a centimetre with a leap of 8.18m. It bettered the mark he set in March 2004.

His world-leading jump of the year in the fifth round saw off the challenge of former Olympic silver medalist James Beckford and Marcin Starzak.

Tomlinson said: "I've had my toughest winter's training ever, where in particular I've practised my technical skills."

case in point....
Chris is a very good jumper but Britain should have 15 of his standard
with its 3:1 population advantage over Australia

for example I think a lot of white europeans would go sub 10 with better climate. In my country black Africans can't beat the whites. And when it is cold they have no chance. Also blacks have lower bodyfat( thats the reasen they got nearly all sixpack when fit) and get really cold muscles in the cold wetter.

Waterbed, there's a lot of moderater climate countries with large white
populations, the U.S being a very highly populated example.

And Europeans come here in the off season to train but I don't see those
sub10s

No, generally NOT many people compete at track and field, especially in
the developed countries, so the chances of sub 10 are diminished simply
through lack of numbers. There are no doubt white people out there now
competing in other sports who could run great times if they took up
athletics seriously

As far as Britain's weather goes... I know, I'm an ex EnglishmanEdited by: mastermulti

The best white long jumpers :
Jai Taurima 8.49 - 6% difference from world record
Robert Emmiyan 8.86 - 2% difference from world record
Louis Tsatoumas 8.66 - 4% difference from world record
Yago Lamela 8.53 - 5% difference from world record

Others are about 6% to 10% from world record. There are not many good White long jumpers, but there are many White high jumpers who are pretty good.

I disagree that there are not many good white long jumpers out there. Louis Tsatoumas of Greece was world ranked number 1 in 2007 and has the longest jump this century.
Also Chris Tomlinson of Britain has jumped well this year and was leading the rankings earlier, but has slipped to third.

The people who have jumped over 8 meters this year are...

Irving Saladino PAN
Mohamed Al KhuwalidiKSA
Christopher Tomlinson GBR
Brian Johnson USA
Wilfredo Martínez CUB
Reindell Cole USA
Peter Rapp GER
Nikolay Atanasov BUL
Ruslan Gataullin RUS
Rogério Bispo BRA
Oleksandr Soldatkin UKR
Volodymyr Zyuskov UKR
Nelson Évora POR

I'm guessing there's six or seven white guys in there

Boise St has signed another white LJer - this one from Sweden - to join the 2 they already have.
This guy, Per Strandquist, has jumped 25-7, and run a 10.42 100m as a high schooler!
The Boise St coach hopes to turn him into a 27ft jumper.

Here's the article from the schools website:

BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State University field track and team announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, Monday, May 12.

Per Strandquist headlines the 2008 recruiting class. Strandquist, who hails from Malmno High School in Sweden, will join the Broncos as a member of the jumps squad. Strandquist¡¯s top marks include a 25-7 (7.80m) in the long jump and a 10.42 in the 100m dash.

¡°Strandquist was the No. 1 student-athlete still available,¡± said jumps coach Petros Kyprianou. ¡°He is a versatile athlete which will be representing Boise State on the national stage in a couple of years. He will come right in and continue the Boise State tradition of great horizontal jumps.¡±

¡°Our goal as a coaching staff is to turn him into a 27-foot long jumper,¡± Kyprianou said. ¡°The best American high school jumper is only at 25-0 (7.62m) right now and Strandquist is already at 25-7 (7.80m). With his speed and concentrating on the long jump my goal as a coach is to have him jumping 27-feet by the time he graduates.¡±

Kyprianou continued; ¡°This was a highly recruited student-athlete. Schools from all over the country were recruiting him but my connection to him as a fellow European really helped bring him to Boise State. He is another piece in the puzzle of reaching our goal of establishing a top five national jumps program at Boise State. The tradition of great jumps at Boise State began under Ed Jacoby and I want to continue his legacy by dominating the jumps at the conference and national level.¡±

Just watching the international meet on TV today from London.
Very interesting that Britain's top 3 long jumpers are all white - Rutherford, Tomlinson, Kirk.
Rutherford wins with a jump of 26ft 9-1/4"

Some good news from UK Athletics at http://www.ukathletics.net/media/news/august-2008/11-08-2008 -tomlinson/ but I don't know how competative he will be after such a recent injury...

Long jumper Chris Tomlinson will be taking his place in Team GB after passing medical and fitness tests, supervised by UK Athletics Medical Team, on Monday morning. The 26-year-old World indoor silver medallist was a doubt for the Beijing Olympics after suffering a tear in his calf muscle at the Crystal Palace Grand Prix on 26 July.

However, following an intensive period of rehabilitation overseen by UK Athletics, he passed a medical test at the Olympic Medical Institute (OMI) at Northwich Park Hospital, London and a fitness test at the UK Athletics West London High Performance Centre at Brunel University on Monday morning. This means he can take his place aboard a flight direct to Beijing from London Heathrow tonight.

Tomilinson was grateful for all the support that he had received from supporting staff, saying: " I'd like to thank the medical staff at the high performance centre in Lee Valley, for all their work, against the odds, to get me to Beijing"

"I'm heading straight out to Beijing, so there will be no hanging around and I'm looking forward to getting into it"

He will arrive in Beijing on Tuesday 12 August, where he is due to compete in the men's long jump qualifying rounds on Saturday 16 August at the Bird's Nest Stadium alongside team-mate Greg Rutherford.

This is probably the lowest point in recent US long jumping history. The US needs more talent and it's been ages since they have had a White American represent the US at major meet.

It may take several more years before some white upstart steps in like the late, and great Mark Prefontaine. I'm talking about a representative in the long jump.

American long distance too badly needs representatives like Frank Shorter and Mark Prefontaine. Edited by: j41181

It's too bad The Greek guy; can't remember how to spell his name; and Tomlinson didn't bring their best in the Olympics. London can't get worse than the Beijing Olympics; we only have up to go from that in track for our guys.

Marcin Starzak of Poland also jumps 26ft 10 inches, and Winter does him one better jumping 26ft, 11-5/8 inches.

I just wonder why can't we find some white, american LJers to compete at this high level? There are these Europeans plus more; Britain has 3 white LJers competing internationally; Australia has a bunch....I wish some American guys could step it up.Edited by: jacknyc
