other than Col Reb being a weirdo (which is really no news at all
smiley2.gif
) here's one DB that will make it hard for NFL to overlook:

Craig Steltz had 3 interceptions (with 100 yards worth of returns) in his first game of the season!

Not to diminish Steltz's talent, but god that Miss St. quarterback was giving away INT's like cupcakes. I think he threw like 34 interceptions that game.

Yep, Henig looked really bad in the second half. He got no protection and was frustrated and threw half a bakers dozen Ints. I'm happy for Craig Steltz though, and he deserved the player of the game award that he received.

Steltz just did not make 3 ints, he had a FF and was all around the field making tackles...doesn't he have more int's now than Landry did all of last year

Steltz leads LSU defense in rout

By RANDY ROSETTA
Advocate sportswriter
Published: Aug 31, 2007

STARKVILLE, Miss. â€â€￾ The LSU defense had nearly as much to do with the 45 points the Tigers scored against Mississippi State on Thursday as the offense did in a season-opening romp at Davis Wade Stadium.

And senior safety Craig Steltz was a major reason why LSU's opportunistic defense forced seven turnovers that led to 38 points. At some point, though, Steltz would sure like to join the scoring parade himself. He got three chances Thursday and never got there, but the bottom-line result eased his personal letdown.

"I'm fightin' for it," Steltz said with an ear-to-ear grin on a night when he intercepted three passes himself and had 100 return yards â€â€￾ but still couldn't get into the end zone.

Even Tigers coach Les Miles threw a good-natured barb at Steltz, who picked off four passes last season and didn't score â€â€￾ despite a 76-yard return on one theft.

"He had a lot of return yardage without getting in the end zone," Miles said with a grin. "Steltz is playing unbelievably strong football for us."

For the Tigers defense, Steltz's continued scoring drought was about the only blemish on a night when second-ranked LSU prolonged its recent domination of the Bulldogs.

Although pressure up front and a harangued QB are a large part of the equation, it takes a few other ingredients.

"It was a lot of luck," Steltz said. "You have to be in the right place at the right time. There's a lot of experience in our secondary and coach Pelini puts us in the right spots to make plays. We're in the third year of his system, and we've got all the kinks worked out.

"Any time you see the ball in the air, you go and just try to make a play," Steltz said.

some other guys you might want to keep an eyeout for... the top two safeties in Division I-AA (now called Division One - Football Championship Subdivision) are white men. also, arguably the top cornerback is a white athlete.

Tony LeZotte, James Madison (Sr., 6-0, 200, safety) - LeZotte made his name as a top safety with a strong effort in the 2004 national championship run and he's kept it up since then, including a 2006 season with 82 tackles and two interceptions. Corey Lynch, Appalachian State (Sr., 6-0, 200, safety) - (he of the famous blocked kick and return against Michigan this year) Lynch earned All-America honors in the past two campaigns after missing the 2004 season due to injury, and his ball-hawking ways have led to 17 career interceptions, including three in last year's postseason. http://www.goasu.com/football/roster/1568/

Casey Gough, Holy Cross (Sr., 6-0, 200, cornerback) - A three-year starter, Gough totaled 54 tackles, eight tackles for a loss, three interceptions and seven pass breakups in 2006. http://goholycross.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gough_casey0 0.html

i made myself watch the Bowling Green-Temple ball game, even though it was pretty ugly.

Temple's white cornerback Anthony Ferla had a very good game despite the huge passing total put up by BGSU's quartereback Tyler Sheehan. the qb avoided Ferla the entire game, only throwing his direction 3 times on 47 attempts.

the first was a deep post in the endzone that Ferla broke up beautifully. the only other 2 passes were on back-to-back plays late in the third quarter to stand-out white receiver Corey Partridge. it looked like Ferla lost focus, but those two completions got his attention, and he played superbly the rest of the game, although in a losing effort.

I was just watching the Cal-USC game and saw the introductions and noticed a white CB starting for Cal and went "WTF??!!, how did I miss this?" Not only is Chris Conte the starter opposite Syd'Quan Thompson, he's a TRUE Freshman! Here's his Rivals bio.

wow, nice find! he was also ranked pretty well, although as safety. he is a 6'3 corner, which may bode well for his future.

good job, jared.

he has tremendous size for a corner. few DBs are athletic and smooth enough at that size to change direction quickly enough, but i watched those rivals highlight clips and he can.

he has a TREMENDOUS ability to play the ball in the air! that is rare for such a young player. best of luck to him in the future!

how did he look in the game you were watching?Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

I had to go somewhere for a good portion of the game. From what I saw, he didn't look to be thrown at. He did recover a fumble in the redzone to stop a USC drive.

SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CRAIG STELTZ
Safety
LSU
6-2 * 209 * Senior
New Orleans, La. (Archbishop Rummel HS)

- Steltz recorded five tackles and intercepted a pair of passes in LSU's 41-24 win over Ole Miss.

- His first interception came in the endzone just before halftime that ended an Ole Miss drive that kept the Tigers ahead, 14-7.

- His second interception halted another Rebel drive inside LSU territory that set up a Tiger drive at the Ole Miss 20-yard line.

- Steltz leads the SEC with six interceptions and leads the Tigers with 73 total tackles.

three Thorpe award finalists and their stats:

1. Craig Steltz, SS LSU: team high 73 tackles (5 for loss, 1 sack), 6 interceptions for 153 yards (25.5 avg), 13 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles and 1 recovered fumble.
leads major conference in interceptions, LSU defense led by him is number 1 in the nation in pass defense and number 2 in total defense

2. Jamie Silva, FS Boston College: team high 101 tackles (2 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks), team high 5 interceptions for 107 yards (21.4 avg), 1 TD also had 1 forced fumble and 3 passed defended.

3. Antoine Cason, CB Arizona: 69 tackles, 1 sack, 5 interceptions returned for 164 yards (32.8) and 2 TDs, also had 13 pass defended; he also has 23 punt returns for 211 yards (9.17 avg)and 2 TDs

clearly for purely defensive stats it should be between Silva and Steltz. my vote is for Craig, since he is a clear leader of LSU highly ranked defense. i just hope they don't give it to Cason for his punt returns...

I agree, backrow. The award is for the nation's best DB. But one of the criteria for winning the award is "athleticism" so the voters may get cute andfactor in punt returns. You never know. Hopefully the voters representing the Thorpe Association aren't members of the mainstream media.

how about Steltz's toughness?!?!

he injured his hamstring in the first half, but he is still on the field, gutting it out and making plays, even though he obviously isn't 100%.

what a warrior!
