West Virginia/Louisville Game

I'm sure everyone is as disappointed as I am over the West Virginia
loss to Louisville today. Even when they were up by 20 points, I kept
thinking that there was no way this group of overachieving white guys
was going to be allowed to beat an all-black squad coached by the slimy
Rick Pitino. My point about whites not being allowed to play defense
was certainly apparent in this game. If the game had been officiated
properly, every Louisville player would have fouled out before
halftime. There was so much physical contact by Louisville that wasn't
called, and several no contact, non-fouls called on West Virginia's
white players, that it almost seemed like the refs had read my previous
post about this subject and decided to show us all just how much they
can effect the outcome of these games. Now there is really no team left
to root for, with the possible exception of Wisconsin. Once again,
March Madness turns out to be very disappointing for those of us who
like a little diversity in our basketball players.

How the heck could they be up by 20 and still lose? Even in a sport filled with blacks, whites still get the affirmative action double - standard whammy. Now I know why it's called March Madness!

You know what they say about refs. You can beat the other team, but you can beat the refs. It's hard when the deck is stacked against you. Like walking up a down escalator.

I agree with your posts. I've noticed a pattern in the tournament over the years. The "Cinderalla" white teams usually get beat by overaggressive full-court pressure teams. Often the white teams jump out to a big lead only to see slowly disappear after full court pressure is applied. Often getting away constant bumping and hacking at the ball handler. The 1998 final of Utah and Kentucky is another good example.

I would, however, like to see white teams try to break the press and fast-break more often. It seems that they think they have to play a slow-down game in order to win. West Viriginia brought the ball up slowly every time in the 2nd half. The Lousiville players were crashing the offensive board because they had no fear of having to get back on defensive to defend a fast-break. Duke, back in the hurley and laettner years, is a good example of a team that attacked a pressing defense. We need more white point guards like Hurley, Steve Nash, and John Stockton in college basketball that push the ball down the court. We also need some of our white teams to be coached to do this instead of sit back. That's my opinion. I agree completely with the refreeing comments.

It is a definite trend seeing the fast break disappear from white-friendly teams. It has definitely hurt too. You have to be able to beat teams at their own games if you can beat them while playing your own, but that is when the refs usually come in to discourage the change.

I was very dissapointed with the W.Virginia game. They
got robbed.I do think that they could have been a little
bit more aggressive though! The U of A Wildcats blew a
15 point lead in the final 4 minutes to lose their game
too so it can happen to black teams to.Everything that
could go wrong did, including horrible officiating.I am
rooting for Wisconsin all the way. They are tied at 44
at halftime with N.Carolina.
