thanks for providing the links to those lists, white lightning. i noticed something ... even though, only Christophe Lemaitre and Ramil Guliyev are amongst the world's elite in the short sprints, there are abundant White sprinters at the top of the European lists.
in the U-23 for example, White sprinters make up 8 of the Top 10 (with the #7 spottied forby a Turk). the remainder of the Top 20 is predominantly White, as well. a similar result is seen on the Junior List, where 5 of the Top 10 are White athletes, and the rest of the Top 20 predominantly so.

The European Junior championships start tomorrow. I've become wary of writing these little previews, as I get my hopes up for certain athletes, and they never seem to produce--not unlike the predictable build-up to every LeMaitre race, during which everyone gets so worked up that they're disappointed when he fails to run the first 7-second 100. Nevertheless, I will once again highlight some of the more promising young European runners for this meet:
100M--Really, just Gemilli. Still no sign of the "LeMaitre effect" inspiring young runners.
200m--this is wide open with a lot of possible medalists and winners. Julien Watrin has a 21.02 PB into a negative wind, and he did that a year ago. So he's a major contender if he's in good form. Spain offers up two young studs, Alberto Gavaldo and Oscar Husillos. I'm especially excited about Husillos as he is one of the youngest in the race and still has a 21.20. Poland has two runners in the 21.3's, and both, like Husillos, have 1993 birthdays, making them younger than most.
400m--We've really got to start paying attention to this Hungarian Nagy. I know I've mentioned his name from time to time (he finished a close second to the seemingly invincible Kirani James at last year's world juniors, and his best time, 45.74, puts him ahead of Gehret, Braddy, etc, all of whom I'm keen on. Let's face it, he's within half a second of the 2011 edition of Jeremy Wariner.
800m--I'd never heard of him before today, but his French kid, Pierre Ambroise Bosse, has just burst onto the scene. He looks like a total thoroughbred. 1:46.18 at his age?? Phenomenal. Puts him well ahead of where our current collegiate superstars (Andrews, Loxsom, Greer, etc) were at the same stage. Martijn Scheepers is also running, and he, too, is ahead of where our collegians were at that age: 1:47.42. In looking at these times, be sure not to compare them to the Kenyan winners at the "youth" worlds. They were balding, mustachioed, had gristly adult bodies, and wore wedding rings. Scheepers and Bosse are legitimate juniors. Oh, and the young Norwegian, Johannes Rogestedt, is running. He once beat the Kenyans (apparently in a year they didn't age-cheat) in world youth finals.
1500m--Should be the most exciting race. Two awesome young Britons are in it, Adam Cotton and Charlie Grice, both of whom I've mentioned before. They've run times in the low 3:40's, putting them at close to a 4:00 mile pace. In looking over the startlist, however, I discovered someone I'd never heard of: Thomas Solberg Eide, who has run an unreal 3:40 for the 1500. That definitely equates to a sub-four mile. He's been under the radar, but he's running as good or better than Verzbicas at the same age.

Gemelli, Watts and Horvat all made the finals. Vicaunt looks unbeatable though. Hopefully it will give these kids confidence for the future.

I stumbled on the name of a Swiss female hurdler called Lisa Urech. She just won the Euro 23s with a 12.62 (0.5) putting her in position 5 in the world this year behind Sally Pearson and three Americans.
She turns only 22 next week and her progression has been: 2008 13.45, 2009 13.02, 2010 12.82.
She must have some sprint speed too but I couldn't find any times. Probably a relay team member since I don't recall the Swiss having an abundance of sprinters

I really enjoyed watching these chamionships. Gemilli looked good winning the silver medal in the 100. Horvat just missed out on the bronze medal in the same event as he faded over the last 20 meters. Even Sam Watts finished in a descent time. The future of UK Sprinting looks to have some nice talent coming up with Adam Gemilli leading the way.
The 400 finals was special. That kid can fly and he may end up being another Borlee type. I want to see more of our guys break through at the 800 meters.

I seem to have developed an uncanny knack for highlighting the wrong people in my pre-event analyses. It turns out the big star of the Euro juniors is a Swedish female pole vaulter, Angelica Bengtsson. She broke one record after another--meet records, age records, national records. And some of those were held by a certain Isinbayeva, who's just been the best of all time for some years now.
As for the 200, Julien Watrin pulled up injured in the semis, and Oscar didn't run.
The 1500 final is over, and Adam Cotton, who's been a promising young star for a couple of years, one a tactical race, over Eide, who was coming hard at the end, but wasn't in a good position and finished second.
The 800 field is set for the finals on Sunday. Surprisingly, Martijn Scheepers (whom I'd rated in the top 3) crapped out in the first round. France's Bosse will be in the finals. It is not clear how much he has exerted himself thus far. In theory, he's the man to beat. However, a young runner I've been following ever since his epic win over the Kenyans as a 16-yr-old, Johannes Rogestedt, blew past everyone in his semi to win impressively, even while easing up. I'm looking forward to the outcome of this one. Rogestedt looks superb, but he likes to run from the back which can be dangerous. The placegetters are 20 months younger than Vicaut which is a lot at 17. But he looks great for Christophe and his teammates. Let's hope Pessonneaux can whittle his time down to the 10.20s to complete a good quartet.

Rytis Sakalauskas does it again. He ran a 10.18 yesterday for another national record! This kid just might be the real deal. He has some wheels on him and he is putting up some really great times. The wind was 1.3 so the time is legal.:smiley:

If this kid keeps this up, we will have to start a new thread in his name soon. He is qualified for the World Champs with the A Standard! He really has a chance to get even faster as he is so young. Rytis is a very gifted sprinter and one to watch for sure. Here is an interview.

I'd like to add another interesting name to this thread, 25 year old Finnish Jonathan Ã…strand has been training seriously for a couple of years now and is really showing some serious talent. He has ran a 10.26 in the 100m and 20.50 in the 200m early in to the season. 200 is his main distance which he will concentrate on in Daegu. Ã…strand has only had a few starts this season (which isnt a bad idea considering the WC in Daegu is in late August/early Sept.). This sunday he ran a decent 10.36 on a wet track in zero wind. I predict new finnish records (current ones are 10.21 and 20.47) for this fellow before the season ends.

LSU has a true freshman sprinter on the roster that i've never seen mentioned on the boards. Trevor Sansone was the Louisiana big-school state champion in the 100-meters as a junior and took 3rd as a senior. he has a personal best of 10.54 in the 100, and he set a meet record as a senior at the indoor state championships in the 55-meters as a senior (in February of 2011), when he ran a blistering 6.35.
he's certainly a youngster with the potential to make some noise on the track, but what really caught my eye was his "scouting" profile by the online "experts" of "talent evaluation." see, Sansone (who has the fastest 55-meter dash time in Louisiana high school state championship history) is listed as running a relatively pedestrian 4.45 40 by Scout and an only slightly-better 4.4 40 by Rivals. those numbers were good enough for him to be rated a zero-star prospect at cornerback.
but something doesn't add up here ...
one wonders how so many Louisiana negro cornerbacks and running backs and wide receivers (dey be having dat speed down theya in da Souf) can post blazing 40 times (they supposedly all run 4.3s, right?), when Sansone, who can literally run circles around them, runs a mere 4.45 ... i mean, it's obvious that his speed is pretty front-loaded if he's the fastest 55-meter guy ever in the state. then how can so many "real" affletes actually be faster than him?
therein lies the beauty of the Caste System. even when a White athlete is fast, he's still not fast enough. somehow he isn't explosive or dynamic or hip-wiggly enough or something. or his smile isn't room-brightening like Robert Griffin III (seen smiling and lighting up the room below) ...

Running a 4.3 40 does not always equate to fast 100 meter times. Christophe Lemaitre probably runs the same 40 yard time of 4.4, the difference is speed peaks at 50 -70 meters; some fast out of the block guys can only maintain their speed throughout, while the more natural accelerating speed guys generate more speed past the 40 yard mark and maintain it. Carl Lewis was a 4.4 40 yard guy. Also, fast 40 times in football is more power/speed then pure speed. NFL players are very strong and explosive (they exclusively train for that), that is why they also have higher standing vertical jumps than basketball players and high jumpers.
