Every year there is a player that seems to come out of nowhere. His face is thrown on the cover of every paper, every website, there will be a Heisman Campaign in his honor, and he will some how emerge from relative obscurity to suddenly realize his talent. He will also play OB, and be black, and previously unproven. Due to all this attention, by the end of the season he will rise to being a fringe first round NFL pick. By the time the talking heads, "experts", and unnamed NFL executives are done and the combine is around he will be an unquestioned Top 10 pick. After the combine (regardless of performance) he will be the "smart" choice for # 1.

This thread is one where I will try to ID and follow this progression. No better proof of a system in effect then a prediction proved true. Who are your picks this year?

Here are mine. With their accompanying stats from last season.

B.J. Daniels Jr. USF (143-245 1685 YDS 58.4% 6.88 YPA 11TD 13INT)
If Daniels is in fact the NBH(NextBlackHype) it would have to be a terrific piece of work on the part of the media. But with his picture on the front page of SI.com this morning I would not rule it out.

EJ Manuel Jr. FSU (65-93 861YDS 69.9% 9.26YPA 4TD 4INT)
My personal pick to be the NBH. I can hear it now "He was unable to showcase his talents hidden behind the less talented Christian Ponder. But oh my isn't he just amazing." After being a top high school recruit Manuel has been unable to see the field due to the incredibly talented Ponder. This year starting as a Jr. I am almost certain he will be the one, he has all the markings of NBH.

Geno Smith Jr, WVU (241-372 2763YDS 64.8% 7.43YPA 24TD 7INT)
Smith is also a very viable candidate he also players for a very dark school. If WVU wins some games this year, don't be surprised to hear his name rocketing up draft boards.

I vote for Denard Robinson of Michigan. If Michigan does well and Robinson plays good in the new pro style UM offense under Brady Hoke then the hype for him will be off the charts.

Just saw a jock sniffer on BSPN hype him. That is as good an indication as any that he will be their man.

Denard is a joke as a QB, he will suffer this year He won't be able to make the transition and eveyone will be blaming the coach for his sorry-ass play.

Here you go, a whole list of them. When I saw the article title "Ten most EXPLOSIVE players", I knew what to expect. Of course, it was shocking to see a WHITE GUY at number 7, but the writer probably thinks that he's a Mexican;-)

The players on that list are all well-known, though.

If we adhere to SchaafC's original description of a "player that comes out of nowhere" (since it is his thread), then my guess is that the next "Great Black Hype" will be Jeffrey Godfrey out of UCF. ESPN did a ton of name-dropping on his behalf at the end of last season. What they love most is that he achieved something that is difficult and uncommon for most black quarterbacks - he had a high completion percentage. They probably shouldn't crown him just yet. Pass defense is terrible in CUSA. Nearly all the defenses in the conference are designed to stop the spread at all costs. So 3-4's and 3-3-5's with lots of blitzing are common. What you get are porous secondaries, but with a higher rate of sacks and picks. It's generally a sound philosophy within the conference, except that UCF, unlike the other CUSA schools, doesn't run the spread. They run a high efficiency power running offense. If you check the statistics, you'll see that UCF threw the ball fewer than every other team in the conference. Godfrey attempted far fewer passes than even Cam Newton. That didn't stop the afflete-lovers from praising his "incredible accuracy".
It's not going to be this year, because Godfrey is only a sophomore. But look for the hype machine to crank into overdrive for his junior season. The media desperately wants a legitimate black quarterback to turn into a star, rather than just the spread monkeys that have been drafted thus far.

Good call on Denard (yo)....there's NO way this black quarterback could ever make it in the NFL as a QB. He doesn't have the intelligence to learn an NFL playbook, read defenses & totally lacks pocket patience.

Griffin went against a defense that did not return six starters. Nick Foles and Zach Collaros both had just as spectacular days but they won't get the same attention.

Riddlewire might be right about Godfrey. UCF is a program that hasn't received a lot of attention and I think that has to be considered when picking a future media manufactured "star." Of course the team around him has to be half-decent as well. If he's stuck at a losing team the media isn't going to make *as* big of a stink over him.

I agree, I think Riddle may have hit it on the head. But Jeffrey Godfrey is only 5 11 and while it could be a distinct possiblity there is still the fact that size dose matter at the next level.
Thats the same reason why I don't think Denard will be NBH, Denard is a Pat White type at best. And more likley a Marcus Vick clone. He has no footwork, poor arm strength, and lacks the size nessicary to "revolutionize the game." Anyone catch the jocksniffing going on for Denard? "The most exciting player in College football." It's all just so blatent I can hardly stomach watching the games with sound on. Where is the Hype for out players with wheels? Ryan Tannehill, his first full season at QB after playing WR his first 2 years should be plasterd all over the web and papers.

Undefeated Clemson sophomore Tajh Boyd will be getting some national love soon.

386 yards with 4 touchdowns against Auburn, and 344 yards with 4 touchdowns against Florida State for back to back wins.

I was happy to see that Florida State's vaunted D doesn't appear to be "as advertised"..

For much of the game, Clemson's (White) OT tandem of Landon Walker and Phillip Price played well. Don't forget, Florida State is a very dark team, and, coming into this season, they received incredible hype, tons of it. And, weren't they ranked #5 when they lost to Oklahoma?

Florida State and Miami losing on the same day.. not bad in my book!! I thought that the "Florida schools" were supposed to be better?

While on the road today, I had the radio tuned into a local sports talk show and the hosts were high on afflete jock strap fumes. They were busy heaping praise on every black black quarterback you can name, while downplaying anything done by dreaded whitey QBs. Mizzou's James Franklin is BETTER than Blaine Gabbert ever was. Already. Nevermind that he's 1-2. He's affletic! He runs! That Landry fellow on Oklahoma that just beat Franklin's Tigers with a superior performance? Blah! Robert Griffin III is better than anybody in history! Forget Andrew Luck, this guy has more TD passes than incompletions after three games! Hand him the Heisman and the number 1 slot in the NFL draft!

I gotta quit tuning in to these shows, it's sickening, but also a clear view into the mind of the DWF.

What bothers me the most about Denard Robinson is the fact he is never going to be an NFL quarterback. He isin't very accurate and hes small and skinny. I bring this to light as for every black college quarterback that gets a chance to be moved to a new position like wr, there are 40 or 50 accomplished white wrs that don't get drafted or looked at that are better than a marginal afflete who happened to play qb. Black quarterbacks don't make accomplished wrs unless your name is Brad Smith.

Denard Robinson is Antwan Randle El. Almost the exact same player. I have seen both of them play alot of times and the style is very similar. Randle El was a magician in college, with space to create plays he was a one man team. Unfortunately the rest of the Indiana team wasn't very good. Robinson is in a little bigger pond at Michigan so he might get more attention but his pro options are the same as Randle El's. Marginal slot reciever.

You have to admit though that Robinson is entertaining to watch. He really busts off some long runs. Frequently. Every pass is an adventure too so there's fun for everyone. I like that he kneels and thanks the Lord after every TD, he's not a showboating ego hog. Maybe it's all an act and I imagine he will turn out to be a turd like every other black star athlete but for right know he just seems like a kid having fun. (Until the jew agents show up with lots of money for drugs and hookers.)

Maybe I have been drinking the Michigan kool-aid but it is part of the tradition of the university to recruit decent black kids and take care of them after they are done with the program. The local area is full of ex UM black players in various jobs they got just because they were football players and played by the rules. Cops, insurance agents, car salesmen, jobs that the medium IQ black guys can do if they keep straight. The UM family looks after them post college, but only if they don't bring any shame on the program. It's a super expensive verison of affirmative action but I think it's better then recruiting thugs then releasing them on society which is what happens at a lot of places.

Braylon Edwards and Mario Manningham I guess is my only argument against what you just said. Michigan did recruit Sam McGuffie and has had a few white safeties but since 1989 Michigan has recrited no white players unless you name is Yale Van Dyne.

Braylon Edwards besides being a pass dropping machine has had run ins with the law mostly concerning drunk driving and one assault with a guy that was in Lebron James posse. So yes kind of a douche but not (yet) a first class NFL thug. I'm not excusing drunk driving but a lot of white athletes get popped for it too and that has something to do with the neo-prohibitionists drive to criminalize all drinking.

Mario Manningham I could not find anything significant other then a low wonderlic score-but I figured he was a retard anyway--and a positive marijuanna test--not particularly shocking.

My point wasn't that the Michigan black players weren't typical black males but that they generally were a cut above the SEC types and were helped in that by a culture of support at Michigan. Anyway that's probably all old news like anything else even half way decent nowadays.

i'm not a fan of his, but Denard Robinson is certainly a talented athlete. his speed is legitimate, as well. he's run a 10.44 100-meters.

Don't forget that Ryan Kerrigan sacked Denard 4 times in ONE game! Last year, Denard was padding his rushing stats at the beginning of the season, and then he had to face the "real" competition and Michigan's season promptly went downhill.

Now, don't get me wrong, I have some worries about Michigan this year.. I see them as being in a much better position with Hoke at the helm compared to RichRod. I also have the feeling that Michigan will defeat Michigan State in this year's rivalry game. Yes, Denard running a lot does open him up to an increased chance of serious injury, or, of course, lighter injuries that just linger on and hamper him. It really doesn't bother me that he chooses to play "hero ball."

Now, back to the point of this thread and "hype".. is it just me or have black quarterbacks played an EVEN softer schedule to start this season compared to previous seasons? I know schedules are made in advance.. and they definitely looked weaker. You see, the media will "hype" black quarterbacks even if they beat several cupcake opponents. B.J. Daniels, Russell Wilson and E.J. Manuel are excellent examples of what I'm speaking of.

--Florida State handily defeats two cupcake opponents, and what followed is the media treating Manuel as some kind of living God. Thankfully, OU derailed that ship!

--South Florida defeated Notre Dame in a game where Daniels' struggled, but then he pads his stats against Ball State and Florida A&M (of all teams). Considering the fact that South Florida is playing in a conference that isn't particularly stacked, you'd think they would make their schedule a little tougher. Also, South Florida is a team that the media is saying will really be "on the map" soon.

--Wisconsin playing the likes of UNLV, South Dakota and Oregon State? Them playing a game at Northern Illinois, a team that has been one of the better MAC teams, makes sense for several reasons and I take no issue with that game. The media's treatment of Wilson has been an enigma of sorts, and, of course, it started all the way back when there was word that he was looking to leave baseball and play one more year of collegiate football. His "hype" started long before he chose Wisconsin and started the season with their cupcake schedule.

I should point out that I'm hardly "scared" of Wilson, as I know his flaws well from watching him at NC State. I care about the truth here, and, even though I'm aware of the Caste media, all of the "where will Wilson go? press/hype TOOK ME BACK!! Maybe we can chalk it up to a sick desperation by a media that has seen many 4/5 star black quarterbacks UTTERLY FAIL..

NC STATE had 4 losses with Wilson as the starter last year. As the season was winding down, remember that many in the media were sure that STATE would win the ACC and get the BCS berth? What happened? STATE lost to Clemson in a game that they should have easily won, and I'm pretty sure that a win there would have put them in the driver's seat (in the ACC). Obviously, it was a very important game, and, on the road as well. A nice test, and "superboy" promptly melted. Sweezy and other elements of STATE'S defense played VERY WELL in that game. Then, at the end of the season, STATE lost at Maryland in a near-empty stadium! Many in the media were confident that STATE would win that game. That loss really upset STATE'S fanbase.

Early in the season, STATE also had a loss to East Carolina, but the losses to Clemson and Maryland were more glaring. Because, late in the season, STATE was more gelled/experienced and therefore had no excuses. They had Sweezy, Audie Cole and Nate Irving. They had solid offensive weapons. Going into the season, there were question marks, but, at the end of the day, they showed themselves to have as much talent as any ACC team, and, yet, the inexplicable losses exist. The Kyle Parker/Tahj Boyd tandem of Clemson, plus their subpar o-line, was very beatable but Wilson layed an egg on offense. A "signature game" - and opportunity for STATE - that went to waste.

Robinson is clearly a good player but he won't be an NFL type. He isin't very accurate and he just dosent have the build for sustaining NFL hits. If i am wrong down the road I will apologize but I don't think that will be neccesary. This guy is a good athlete on a team full of non quarterbacks.

Pittsburgh better not blow this game against "#16" South Florida.

RIGHT ON, another TD for PITT! :)

College Gameday is in full fellatio mode this morning.. featuring Russell Wilson, Tajh Boyd, and Robert Griffin. They just finished polishing off RG3, waxing poetic about his freaky touchdown to incompletion ratio, and 236 qb rating. They even interviewed his fiancee, a little white cutie with huge, mouth-watering juggs and a multi-carat rock on her finger.

Well, duh, ESPN will hype black quarterbacks EVEN if they are getting Ws over inferior competitions. This can backfire, however. The crashing-and-burning of B.J. Daniels and E.J. Manuel are a few examples of this.

Tahj Boyd's "stat gains" are because Clemson has switched to the spread offense. The media is in a no lose situation today because Boyd is playing against Logan Thomas of V-Tech. Whoever wins this game will get a top 10 ranking, and I doubt if anyone on CF would cry if one of the biggest Caste offenders -- V-Tech -- were to lose. We know WHY the media is promoting the Clemson/V-Tech game.. don't worry!
