NBA's Vujacic says he's engaged to Sharapova</font>

SAN DIEGO (AP)â€"Los Angeles Lakers player Sasha Vujacic(notes) of Slovenia says he's engaged to marry Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova.

"We are engaged and are both really happy,"Â￾ Vujacic said Thursday before the Lakers' NBA preseason game against Golden State. "It's good and now we can focus on other things."Â￾

The agent for three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova confirmed the news in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Vujacic said he proposed on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting at a friend's barbecue.

"It's was probably old school,"Â￾ Vujacic said. "I had to do it like a gentlemen."Â￾

Vujacic said a wedding date hasn't been set.

Vujacic returned to the court Thursday, a week after getting a concussion when teammate Lamar Odom(notes) accidentally elbowed him in the face during practice. Vujacic averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 67 games for the Lakers last season, his sixth with the club.

Sharapova won her first major title at Wimbledon in 2004, when she was 17. She went on to win the 2006 U.S. Open and 2008 Australian Open and also reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

After shoulder surgery and an elbow injury forced her to miss time the past two seasons, Sharapova is currently ranked 18th.

I was really worried when I first saw the headline on Yahoo! that she was engaged to a Lakers' guard. I usually don't pay attention to this kind of stuff and thought she might have strayed to one of the black players. Glad to know she is the intelligent person I've always thought her to be.

Hopefully they can have several athletic children in the coming years.

I like these European female athletes, particularly from Russia. Unlike many of our current American female athletes (lady wiggers)who either chase the "superhero's" out of their race, or go lesbian, these women have some self pride....Matter of fact, it's well known that many talented, female hoopsters from Europe refuse to play in the WNBA because it's "lesbian infested". Rudy Fernandez' sister, (Marta) for example, made the WNBA All-Rookie team a few years ago, but never returned. So many others have left since 2000, when the league seemed to be more white friendly and less lesbo-infested.

My favorite is the Ukraine for female athletes. They seem to still be able to maintain their femininity while performing at a high level...and very easy on the eyes, too

. They prove it isn't necessary to become butch to succeed.

I agree, many of the White American "female" athletes tend to be much more masculine in dress, tone, and mannerisms, particularly the "White" "females" in basketball where they can be very wiggerish too. I remember seeing a few seconds of one game and heard some "White" "female" players talking to each other and, if you were blind, you'd think they were black and from some inner-city ghetto

. As I still wanted my mind to maintain the now-delusional-notion that females are still soft, dainty, polite and "sugar and spice and everything nice", I quickly changed the channel as counseling for mental health can be very expensive to treat.

Also, I caught a few innings of some collegiate fast-pitch softball over the summer and those "girls" give the ones in basketball a run for their money. Good thing the NCAA doesn't allow players, of either gender, to chew tobacco.

I have no doubt the WNBA is rife with lesbians. But is that really why Europeans don't want to play in it? Or is it because they can make so much more money at home, why go through the hassle for $25,000?

i hope Vujacic and Sharapova have a dozen babies. they should all be long and athletic, and i hope they dominate sport for a generation. them, or any other White people from anywhere in the world.
