I remember years ago reading about a little Japanese skip-rope acrobat guy that had been measured at 48 inches. I did a bit of a google on it, but couldn't find any evidence of such a thing. 4 feet is a pretty common number usually cited as the upper limit to human leaping, although hard evidence is hard to come by (vertical jumping is 2nd only to penis size when it comes to male BS, in my experience.) Maybe Stefan Holm or Franklin Jacobs have public numbers in this range? I got a pretty iron-clad memory for useless trivia though, so there may be something to that jap guy...

The vertical jump is a measurement, like the 40 yd dash, that must be taken with a grain of salt. The standard measurement is taken by standing flat footed and jumping, but these days with so much riding on the "measureables", guys cheat. I have seen coaches measure VJ with one step, then jump, two steps, etc. I believe Michael Jordan was credited with a 42 inch vertical, but the rumor is that he took multiple steps to get that measurement.

People also think only short black guys can dunk and that is totally untrue.Kyle Dodd went to ASU a couple of years ago.He was a white point guard who at 6 feet tall could dunk all day long. Not only could he dunk, but he would do a 360 degrees dunk like it was a layup.Jim Leonard who is now on the Buffalo Bills was the most athletic football player on the Wisconsin Team all 4 years he was there! At 5'8,he could do any dunk that Kobe could do.He won the slam dunk contest all 4 years he was there. As far as pure vertical leap goes,I would say a volleyball player or a high jumper would have the record.

Boss Baily had a 46 inch jump. A 300 pound weight lifter i heard of had a 42. It would be awsome if they had a vert contest inviting athletes from all sports.

The world record for the highest difference between actual height and clearance is held by a Black American and Steffan Holm the current Olympic champion. Thy myth about white guys lacking hops is just that as most of the world class high jumpers are white.....

I just thought I would post that all of the jumping events at the NCAA Indoor National Championships were won by white guys.Arturis Abolins/Long Jump,Tommy Skipper in the Pole Vault,Jesse Williams in the High Jump and Jaanus Vudmae in the Triple Jump.Again when will the stereotypes ever end?White men dominate most jumping events world wide.Only in the Long Jump do the black athletes fair a little better. That could be changing very soon with around 5 guys that are very young who are the best at what they do.

A side note on Tommy Skipper,he just recently went for 19 feet on his first attempt. This kid is incredible.I can see him challenging the world record possibly by 2008.He still has alot of upside as he has a couple years left still in college and a long career ahead of him.
