Borzov's 100 and 200m meter victories in 1972 Olympics. Thank goodness for Jeremy Wariner, world's best 400m. sprinter, but when will there be another Borzov?

Thanks for making the link active. I must be doing something wrong because previous links used to be be active when posted.

I have a feeling that an Olympic medalist white 100 or 200 meter sprinter will happen soon. Of course, there was Kenteris in 2000, the lone white in the 200m. finals and the winner. I hope the next Dave Sime or Armin Hary will emerge in the next 5 years.

All I can say is wow. I have only seen the races on youtube but they never had the in depth coverage or interviews with Borzov. Thank you so much for posting this. He is a legend and he will be remembered for a long, long time. What incredible form, speed and power.

If I could turn back time on one event, it would be the 1972 olympic 100 meters. I'd make sure Eddie Hart and Rey Robinson made it to their trials on time. I believe both would have made the final. I think Borzov would've smoked them, but would've been forced to run a much faster time.

There were conspiracy theories during that time that somehow the evil Russians tricked Hart and Robinson into not showing up. Now that I've grown older and have learned more of how life works, I wonder if there wasn't a conspiracy on the American side because they knew their beloved black supermen would lose to Borzov.

That whole story about them missing their races has always been fishy.

i would also like to point out that Borzov does not look like a roid taker, to shut up anyone who like to throw that idea around.

Half of the competitors in the final were white. The good ol' days.

The starting time for the 100 meter race was announced as "1620." This was military-style time which the olympics were using. It meant "4:20 pm." The American sprinters, Eddie Hart and Reynaud Robinson, thought it meant "6:20 pm." So did their coach, Stan Wright. Since they rhought the race was two hours later, Hart and Robinson failed to make it in time. They were lounging before the TV and saw the race starting that they were supposed to be in.

There are various stories on why Hart and Robinson missed their quarter final race. One version is that they had an out of date program. The other is the historians view. Also Robert Taylor barely made his race and Borzov was late too. So there were problems for a bunch of competitors. Borzov who got an andreline rush did a sea level world's best of 10.07. His 10.07 proved he would have won gold even if the two Americans would have toed the line....Edited by: white is right

White is right, do you know how who was in the heat with Borzov when he ran the 10.07 and how much he won by? I mean did he let it all hang out during that race, or did he just cruise.

I've looked around the web and have not been able to find out this info. I even tried to register at Track and Field News to see if any of their gurus could go back and dig up the info, but keep running into glitches in my registration.

A back issue of Track and Field News will tell you all the results. I remember reading accounts of the race from that magazine. It was years ago so I can't tell you who was in the field with him.

He raises his handsfor victory about 5m before finish line so he eased up with that 10.07.

A lot of people like to convict dominant white sprinters like Borzov -- by conjecture -- with substance abuse, simply because dominant black sprinters everywhere are being humiliated and exposed as the drugged-out cheaters they are.

Look at Borzov and then look at the sprinters of today. He is muscular but still looks natural. Todays sprinters look like Bodybuilders. It's so obvious that you would have to be blind to not see what is going on.

We need a new Borzov type to mix it up. I hoping that Pickering will fill that role. I want to see many others step it up. Michael LeBlanc is one to keep a serious eye on as well. He is very talented.

how anyone could say he was on steroids is just crazy. Alan Webb has more of a build then Borvoz. hell, Marion Jones looks more muscular. it all comes down to the communist country / white = roids theory. its BS. wait till Pickering drop a 9.98. that's when his rumors will start, if they haven't already.

We will come to a point where ANYONE running under 9.9 will be a suspect, and there are many. The officials are morons, they need to start testing for the masking agents as well. Only then will we see the numbers start to climb rather than fall and those "records" of the past will be astericked.

Wow, thanx Jacknyc. Where'd you get the info?

This shows Borzov wasn't pushed very hard. If he would've let it all hang out, this 10 second barrier thing would've been taken care of 35 years ago. Eddie Hart and Rey Robinson would've pushed him sub 10.00.

He was at his absolute peak in 1972 and easily beat the rest of the world at that time.

If the 72 finals was at altitude or had a decent tailwind Borzov would have broken both the 10 and 20 second barriers.

Yes, and Taylor and Crawford were no joke. Crawford went on to win gold in 76. Yet Borzov smoked them with ease. It is possible for the fastest man in the world to be white.

Borzov ran his 10.07 in the semifinals of the 1972 Munich games. Because his finals time was slower, he probably at least went all out until he knew he was going to win in the semifinal. I'd say 10.05 would be his time if he ran through the line and dipped (seconnd place only got 10.16, so he was not pushed too hard), and because there was no wind a 1.9 m/s tailwind would have made it in the high 9.97s or 9.98s. That was 35 years ago before steroids became popular. Today Borzov would probably run around a 9.8. Whites are just as fast as blacks.
