DENVER (AP) -- His teammates surrounding him and a rare milestone behind, Pierre Turgeon had just one thought: "Finally!"

Turgeon became the 34th player in league history to reach 500 goals and Alex Tanguay scored twice, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.

Turgeon, in his 18th season, had been waiting for the milestone goal since scoring twice against Vancouver on Oct. 27. He finally got it on a pass from Marek Svatos, one-timing it past Sharks goalie Vesa Toskala.

Turgeon, 27th in NHL history with 1,288 points, received a lengthy standing ovation as the "500" flashed on the scoreboard and responded with a quick raise of the stick.

"The last couple games I've been thinking about it and it's nice to get it out of the way," said Turgeon, who has five goals and nine assists in 14 games this season, his first with Colorado. "It's a nice milestone to reach."
