More and more these days I find myself paying somuch attention to the white athlete.I guess that goes without saying being on this board. An example of this would be when I check the boxscores for baseball or basketball,I find out what the white guys did first, sometimes I'll totally miss a great performance buy some black dude because of my eagerness to see what the whiteguys did. When I watch sports like college basketball, which I do like, and the match-up is too- black North Carolina against too- black U-conn,I probably won't watch to much of it because there needs to be the white element there. This isn't so much the case with the NFL,because I'm a much bigger football fan but I'm still constantly checking up on the white guys.In boxing there may be a bout between a white and a black where both fighters are unfamiliar to me,automaticaly it's go white-guy.One of the cool things about this site is that you can keep informed about up and coming white athletes in all sports.Anyway, that's my piece for now and let's have a great 2005 for the white athlete.

I know what you're saying, but another way to put it is that it's not tunnel vision, it's focusing on the Big Picture instead of what the system trains the hapless "man in the street" to think and say. It's like that when it comes to politics, too, which is intertwined with sports and all other aspects of life. When you become one of the fortunate few who understand what's actually going on, you can't go back to the way you looked at things before your consciousness was raised.

Good points by both of you.I work with alot of minorities
and I can tell you that it is not even close when it comes to them cheering for their own race.Whites are almost non existent in their sports world. That is the problem.Whites are always too busy caring about their feelings and their atheletes. They don't give a sh** about us or almost any white athlete.I have seen it over
and over. They try to make any one feel guilty if you even
root for a white athlete. That's B.S. and I will root for
who ever I want to.That's why we live in America.Let's
get more people educated and root for our ancestry.

Another thing is that there are so many sports so many athletes that is is good to be able to just concentrate on a few guys and cheer them on. In football/basketball there are only a few white players so it is easy to pick them out and cheer for them.

I agree with speedster above though, for example the Christman Eve game with Minnesota and Green Bay, which I used to be interested in held no interest for me except for Favre.

I agree, guys. I couldn't be less interested in a game
if there are no whites playing- especially no white
stars. An NBA game with 10 black players on the
floor- or maybe nine black players and one white
roleplayer who isn't going to do that much- will keep
me channel surfing. I can appreciate good play from
a non-white athlete. A good play is a good play. I
just don't care that much! There's no emotional
attachment with the non-white player. There's
personal significance for me, and for all of us
here, when a white player does well. I'm happy for a
white player when he does well, and disappointed
when he doesn't (or when he doesn' t act classy.)

I'm not loyal to any team that doesn't have white
players that I'm interested in, even teams that I grew
up watching. I was a big UK Wildcat (basketball) fan
when I was growing up, but I've been indifferent
towards Tubby Smith's mostly black teams. (Patrick
Sparks is a good player for Big Blue this year,so I'll
watch them now.) There are a lot of teams that are
mostly black except for one or two guys that I'm
interested in. So I'll just root for the individual players
that I like.

I've been a long-time Utah Jazz fan, but if they were
mostly black, I would've forgotten about them once
John Stockton retired. If Carlos Boozer scores 30
points to help the team win, I'm fine with it, because I
want them to be a great team. But I'm watching the
game for Andrei and the other white players, and I
would much rather see one of them score those
points.

I agree with Don. One definitely can't go back once
one has racial awareness. How could I root for
black players with the same intensity that I root for
white players? There's just no way. The stakes
could never be as high.

You guys make some really great points. I grew up in the Atlanta area, and am/was a huge Falcons fan at one point, but I now find myself feeling indifferent concerning how they do, because they feature very few white players and not only that, but are now one of the segment of teams which feature a black quarterback. I mean, don't get me wrong, Vick is fun and exciting to watch and everything, but there's just no emotional attachment there. That is why in recent years, I have switched my allegiances to the Chargers, one of the teams that have always featured a decent share of white players... including a white QB (Drew Brees) that was virtually left on the side of the road for dead, and is now having a pro-bowl season.

I totally agree with the point made about having no emotional attachment to non-white atheletes. The only non-white athelete I ever had an attachment to would be Hank Aaron, and that is because the non-white athletes from yesteryear were a little more in tune with white, mainstream society than the whiny, petulant, thug-like, non-whites in sports today. It is for this reason in which I havent watched NBA basketball in over ten years. Another thing that I'm missing is my hockey, because once football ends, I will have nothing to hold me over for 4 months until baseball starts. Its really too bad that the hockey season might be cancelled, especially after such a great Stanley Cup finals last year.. its truly a shame
