Nate Eachus RB Colgate

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - You would expect to find a blue cape with an "S" underneath Nate Eachus' Colgate football jersey.

Instead it's a short-sleeved black shirt.

Eachus, the FCS' 2010 leading rusher, was given the shirt by teammate Andrew Nairin and he doesn't remember going a game or practice without it last year.

OK, so maybe Eachus is a little superstitious. But you can't blame him for knowing what works great.

Nor can you blame Colgate head coach Dick Biddle for knowing what works, like giving the ball time and again to Eachus, one of the Top 10 FCS running backs this season.

As a junior, not only did Eachus' 1,871 rushing yards top the FCS, but the workhorse was No. 1 in scoring average (12 ppg), tied for the national lead with 22 touchdowns and averaged more carries per game (28.8) than any other back. He averaged 5.9 yards on his 317 carries.

"I think I'm going to be shooting for some higher expectations," Eachus said. "I've been successful and I was healthy last year to have as good of a season as I had. The great thing about this year is we have our whole offensive line coming back."

Eachus will be a leading candidate for the Walter Payton Award, which honors the outstanding player in the FCS, is presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com. He finished sixth in the voting last year.

The 5-foot-10, 216-pounder sits seventh in Patriot League history with 3,722 rushing yards, is destined to pass former Colgate star and 2003 Payton Award winner Jamaal Branch (4,108) and would become No. 1 if he reaches a potential goal of 2,000 yards this season. His former teammate, Jordan Scott, rushed for 5,621 yards at Colgate from 2005-08.

"Two-thousand yards would be great," Eachus said. "Personally, I try to set goals. I do set team goals first, which is (to) win the league, which is most important. And I would like to get 2,000 yards. As long as we're getting wins, the yards will come."

Eachus, from Drums, Pa., has a calm demeanor on the field. The all-business approach has led to him improving diet this offseason, and he says he feels faster and stronger.

That's not good news for opposing defenses, of course. Eachus already has seven 200-yard games in his career, including a school-record 291 yards against Cornell last season.

He wants to do a better job with ball security. He doesn't wear gloves, even late in the season when the weather can turn wintry in Hamilton, N.Y.

"People say that maybe I get worn out after 30 carries in a game, but I feel like I get better as the game goes on. ... It becomes easy for me in the fourth quarter," Eachus said.

"I'm just a low runner that goes to the hole fast and stays low. I guess you can say that a lot of it's from wrestling in high school. In wrestling, you've got to be down and on your feet. They both go hand-in-hand for each other. I'm so low, pretty quick and once in a while I'll be shifty. That's my style. I'm the kind of person who gives the blow and doesn't take the blow."

Opposing defenses will focus their game plans around stopping Eachus. Although Colgate, 7-4 last season, will return all five of their starting offensive linemen, it will be inexperienced at quarterback because of the graduation of three-year starter Greg Sullivan. Junior Josh Hasenberg or sophomore Gaven McCarney figure to line up under center as the new starter.

"What leads to running the ball a lot is the play-action pass. I think we're going to surprise a lot of teams this year, just throwing and running," Eachus said.

"What goes through my head is that I want to try and score every time. I'm an angry runner, try and score, don't take anything for granted."

Eric Beitenstein RB Wofford

Eric Breitenstein, Wofford, Jr., 5-11, 205 - All right, Breitenstein is a fullback in the Terriers' triple option, but he's anything but a traditional plodding fullback. He isn't an exceptionally fast runner, but it often takes two defenders to bring him down, even when the defense knows Breitenstein will be running up the middle. His ability to make tacklers miss him and then find open space led to him rushing for a school-record 1,639 yards and 22 touchdowns on over six yards per carry last season. He went over 200 yards against both Furman and Samford.

Nick Schwieger RB Dartmouth

Nick Schwieger, Dartmouth, Sr., 5-10, 210 - If you're looking for a workhorse, it's Schwieger, who carried the ball at least 25 times in eight of his nine games last season. He has an excellent vision of the field and is a strong and powerful runner who wears down defenses. He shared the Bushnell Cup for Ivy League player of the year after rushing for a league-best 1,133 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also caught 28 passes for 210 yards.

I'm posting this here because it's been a long time coming and there's nowhere else to put it.
Although not a top FCS runningback yet, Lehigh's Zack Barket (5'10", 205lbs) will finally get his chance to perform as the starter for the Mountain Hawks. One of the most productive high school runningbacks of all time (#2 on the single season list, #1 on the single season TDs list), Barket was discriminated against because of his race by college coaches. He also had to wait two years at Lehigh while other runningbacks floundered in front of him. Now it's his turn.

Another article on Colgate's Nate Eachus from Draftdaddy:

Closer look at Colgate's outstanding junior running back Nate Eachus, who should get plenty of attention from N.F.L. scouts.

And since Robbie Frey transferred to D2 Kutztown I'll post info about him in this thread. From Draftdaddy:

Closer look at speedy tailback/kick returner Robbie Frey, who was expected to be a Big East starter this season before transferring to a D-II school for academic reasons.

** Looking forward to seeing Barket finally get a chance to start!

the name Adam Urbano is likely familiar to most avid readers of Caste Football. yet another in the long list of talented White running backs to be shunned by Division One recruiters, Urbano is now the starting tailback at Tennessee Tech. he has big play potential every time he touches the ball, yet due to a high ankle sprain after his first carry he didn't get much love from his coaching staff in their season-opener against the FBS Iowa Hawkeyes.

Urbano ran for 17 yards on the first play of the game, yet he only had 4 carries (and 1 reception) in the remainder of the contest. his affletic back-up had 24 carries in the game, yet his long was only 11 yards.

expect Urbano, should he get the touches, to put up big numbers this year.

RB-Nate Euchus from Colgate had 165 yards rushing on 36 carries & 1 TD & added 4 receptions for 59 yards in a 37-34 OT win over Albany this past Sat...who has soph. Dillon Romain; only had 2 carries for 3 yards..but had a 75 yard TD reception!

Would like to see some highlights of the game...

I used to live near Syracuse and I know a lot about Nate Eachus. I watched him last year agauinst SU when they hosted Colgate and to be fair, he is not NFL material as of yet. This has nothing to do with skin color but he really dosent have much of an initial burst and arguably is not very elusive.

If what you are saying is true, it sure is odd that he was able to lead the entire FCS in rushing last year and will threaten to do so again this year. If he had black skin, he'd be considered NFL material no doubt.

I really hope the guy succeeds but guys like Cory McCaffrey and Eric Breittenstein are going to have a better chance making it to the big leagues. I still hope Robbie Frey dosent give up on an NFl dream. The kid has speed , power and great agility. He could easily make it as a kick returner and backup rb in the NFL. If Chase Reynolds can make a practice squad and hopefully the 53 man roster we should have at least5 or 6 FCS guys getting a chance.

Breitenstein is a big talent for sure. I'm hoping to watch him play in person this year.

Thanks for the update on Adam, JC! He must be having more trouble with his ankle because he didn't get any stats in tonight's win. Hopefully he'll be back soon.

Robbie Frey had a great debut for Kutztown last week. He ran for 140 yards and 2 tds on only 16 carries. I still think this guy is a 3rd round draft pick next year but time will tell if he wants it or the NFL wants him even.

for the second week in a row, Frey goes for over a hundred yards (131 yards on 20 carries). and for the second week in a row, he has big help from diminutive teammate Josh Mastromatto. Mastromatto ran for 97 yards on 15 carries after going for 120 yards on 11 carries a week ago.

the duo is also terrific in the return game. Frey had a 42-yard kick return today, while Mastromatto had a 54-yarder last week. both are also effective in the passing game.

as for Robbie's future, Frey certainly has NFL talent, speed, and ideal size (6-0, 200-pounds). but he's got that damn skin condition that destroys athletic ability ...

As Umass is joining the MEAC confrence next year it should be shown that redshirt freshman rb Brian Dowling will most likely be toting the ball next year. He is fast , powerful and elusive. He will have a 1,000 plus rushing total in at least the next 2 out of 3 years.

jake miller's big day.jpg

sophomore tailback Jake Miller ran wild in North Dakota’s narrow loss to Fresno State. the 5-11, 168-pound sprinter (he was a 4-time state champion and 11-time state qualifier as well as taking sixth in the 400-meter at the 2009 Nike Nationals) busted loose for career-highs with 145 yards, 3 touchdowns (including a beautiful 70–yarder), and 21 carries against the FBS Bulldogs.

teammate Mitch Sutton (the junior powerback to Miller’s speed) also played well before getting banged up: 8 carries for 70 yards.

the duo helped the FCS team give Fresno State a BIG scare before coming up a little short, 27-22.

Terrible news as Cory McCaffrey's football career is over.
McCaffrey suffered a season-ending leg injury in last week's game against Montana. Since jerkwad Jerry Glanville wasted Cory's first two seasons as an unused slot receiver (3 receptions in two years), this was Cory's final season of college football.
McCaffrey, whose ability to change directions was unparalled in college football, was the greatest high school runningback in Oregon history. He finishes his career with 2,018 yards on 353 carries (5.72 avg) with 23 Touchdowns. He also had 30 receptions for 209 yards and 1 Touchdown.

That's sad Riddlewire. I know the odds aren't good, but I hope Corey can get a shot with the NFL. He truly has the talent to make it.

A little update on Kutztown's Robbie Frey. Robbie has gone over 100 yards in 4 out of 6 games he's fully played in. I'm not counting last week as he only had 2 carries. Hope he's not seriously hurt. Anyway, on the season Robbie has 689 yards and 8 touchdowns. That's 6.8 YPC! I'm glad to see he's having success.

Zach Barket ran all over Colgate today in Lehigh's 45-25 victory.
Barket had 188 yards on 21 carries (8.95avg) and 2TD. He also caught two passes for 36 yards and both receptions were for touchdowns.

I bet Pittsburgh wishes they had him now (although that's not Graham's fault).

I wanted to talk about SUNY Stony Brook senior RB Brock Jackolski. This weekend I came to learn that he is a family friend with someone I am close with. We were discussing him and I was told how talented he is. He played is first 2 season at Hofstra and lead the team his freshman year in all purpose yards. After Hofstra's football program folded up he transferred to Stony Brook.

In his first year there he racked up many honers:
-Ernest Owusu Offensive Team MVP
-All-Big South (Stony Brook is in Long Island ironically) first-team selection at running back
-Second-team selection at kick return
-Totaled 1,966 yards (1,029 rushing, 788 kick return, 149 receiving)
-Finished with 12 touchdowns (nine rushing, two receiving, one kick return)
-Led the Big South and eighth nationally with 178.7 all-purpose yards per game

This year he was a preseason All-Big South by Phil Steele's College Football Review and a college Football Performance Awards watch list at running back and kick returner. He's having another great year but Saturdays performance may have been his best. In a school and conference record for points scored, Stony Brook routed Gardner-Webb 76-28. In the win, Brock set a Big South Conference record with five touchdowns. 4 were part of his 107 yards rushing and 1 came on a reception. What's more impressive is that Brock is part of a running tandem. Miguel Maysonet is 2nd in the FCS while Brock is 17th (Maysonet gets sightly more carries).

Season stats:
161 carries for 1,108 yards (6.9 YPC) and 12 touchdowns
7 receptions for 45 yards and 1 touchdown (Stony barely throws)
18 kick returns for 604 yards (33.6 average) and 1 touchdown

An update on a local talent here in NY:

Two weekends ago, Stony Brook faced Liberty in the final game of the regular season. Both teams were 5-0 in the Big South with the winner making the playoffs. Well behind a strong game by RB Brock Jackolski, Stony Brook won 41-31. He's half of a dual headed running attack that accounts for most of the team's yardage. Brock had 18 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown along with a 14 yard touchdown reception. His 6.7 YPC was better than 1A back Maysonet who had more yards on 25 carries. Brock also averaged 27 yards per kickoff return.

This past weekend, Stony Brook advanced to face Albany in the first round of the playoffs. Trailing 28-10 midway through the 3rd quarter, Stony mounted a comeback on the legs of Jackolski. He scored on a 6 yards run, a 55 yard pass and an 11 yard run to win 31-28 in stunning fashion. He finished with 103 yards on 22 carries and 3 touchdowns total. He was solid on kick returns as usual.

Game highlights below with lots of pale faces making plays for both teams.

On Saturday, they face 11-0 Sam Houston St at 3PM on ESPN3. On the season, Brock has rushed 201 times for 1,332 yards and 15 TDs at 6.6 YPC. He also has 114 yards and 3 TDs receiving.

In the loss, Jackolski was the top runner for SB. He had 14 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown. Great season. I know it's not likely but I hope he gets a chance with an NFL team.

Jackolski will be playing for the North in the 2011 FCS Senior Bowl! Eachus should have garnered an invite as well!
