Matt Johnson, Eastern Washington, S, Sr., 6-2, 220 - With 15 career interceptions, Johnson will threaten the school record of 18. He's entering his fourth season as a starter, having earned All-Big Sky first-team and The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS All-America third-team honors for the FCS champion Eagles last season. In 15 games, he totaled 105 tackles with five interceptions and eight other pass breakups, adding two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He is a physical presence who is instinctive.

Mike McElroy, Southern Illinois, S, Sr., 6-1, 210 - After earning preseason All-America honors last season, McElroy missed most of the campaign because of an ankle injury. The quarterback of the Salukis' defense had intercepted seven passes and made 78 tackles as a junior in 2009. He has both an intelligent and physical style. The Salukis are counting on him to come back strong as they try to rebound from a tremendously disappointing season.

Cooper Taylor, Richmond, S, 6'5 220. Former Georgia Tech player should be dominant in the FCS. He could have been dominant in the FBS but Tech prefers affletes.

Outstanding information! Seems there's a trend toward white DB's. Are there more out there now or is it just my imagination; Conte, Brodie, Irvin, etc.

Should we be getting new hope at this position?

D3 Cornerback Derek Dreher from UW Lacrosse is considered the best CB in his conference and he has tremendous size for the position(6'2 210).

Christmas came early for Derek Dreher last year.
The UW-La Crosse cornerback then spent the next eight months earning his gift.
Dreher was knocked out before halftime of the Eagles’ game on Oct. 2, 2010, at
UW-Oshkosh with a torn right ACL.
Since he was a senior, it looked like his career was over. But Dreher, who’d played in 3½ games, applied for a medical redshirt and the NCAA granted it in December, giving him one more year of eligibility.

“It was the best feeling in the world,” Dreher said. “Not just the fact that I get to play football again but that I get to be around this group of guys who I’ve known for past four or five years and know I get to help out.”
Dreher will do more than help out.
If healthy — and so far he’s been able to participate fully in drills and says his knee is strong — he’s one of the top cornerbacks in the WIAC.

“Best corner in the league for sure,” Eagles free safety Jake Meckstroth said.

Dreher, who is 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, has 31 starts and 12 interceptions during his UW-L career. He is a two-time
all-WIAC defender (a 2008 second-team selection and a 2009 honorable mention choice) .

He went through a non-draft/junior workout with pro scout Gary Smith in the 2010 offseason, and La Crosse coach Joel Dettwiler said calls from NFL scouts are coming in again about Dreher.

For Dreher, the road back to the Eagles’ secondary was not an easy one, starting with the Oshkosh game.
“I was just running down on kickoff, and I took a cut and didn’t really get hit and it just gave out,” Dreher said. “As soon as I’m down, (head athletics trainer) Scott (Doberstein) came over and I said, ‘I just tore my ACL.’ We got back to the sideline and he looked at it and said. ‘You were right.’”

Dreher worked with athletic director Josh Whitman to petition for a medical redshirt. When it was granted, Dreher got to work for 2011.
“It was rehab, rehab, rehab,” Dreher said. “I worked my butt off to get ready for the season and get back with these guys. They’re part of my family, so I just wanted to work as hard as I could to help them out.”

Dreher sat out spring practices in April and was close to 100 percent for the start of August preseason camp on Sunday.
“It feels good; so far it hasn’t given me any trouble,” Dreher said. “I’m just about back. The hardest part is mental when I cut on it again and do all that stuff.”

Dettwiler, who was hired in February, hadn’t seen Dreher play in person before this week, but he knows Dreher’s story.
“He spent a lot of time this summer busting his (butt),” Dettwiler said.
Dettwiler admitted it’s tempting to move Dreher to a safety position to allow him to cover more of the field and make plays. Then again, at cornerback Dreher can continue to lock down wide receivers.

“He’s got a lot of tools. He’s good,” Dettwiler said. “I have to be able to get him to understand how good he is because they’re all a little bit nervous with some of the new techniques. He should be able to take over and make it a 10-on-10 ballgame and own people. But do you tuck him away on one side of the field or move him around?”
Dreher doesn’t have the answer. He’s just happy to have another season.
“Right now I just want to be around these guys and do what I can for them,” Dreher said.

Here's a RS Sophomore corner back that is a returning starter from that Dayton Flyer Defense in 2010. He's listed at 6'0 165 but he's bulked up. Probably closer to 175 now. Just another guy to keep an eye on.

Kyle Sebetic

Sebetic
started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman. He had an impressive season as he ranked fifth on the team in tackles from the cornerback position with 51. 31 of his tackles were solo, and he recorded two sacks for a loss of four yards. He also had one interception, broke up four passes and recovered one fumble.

in the Iowa Hawkeye thrashing of FCS team Tennessee Tech, there were actually a couple of Golden Eagles who stood out on the defensive side of the ball and appeared to be more than a match for the more highly recruited folks on Iowa's roster.

TTU safety Taylor Hennigan was a physical force in the running game. the former receiver-turned-headhunting-safety caused the first turnover of the game with a crashing hit, and his presence around the ball was audible throughout the rest of the contest. however, he was not the most dominant defensive player on his team in the game ...

that honor went to field cornerback Caleb Mitchell. for those who don't recognize the term "field corner," it is when a cornerback always plays the wide side of the field, which is much more difficult than the "boundary corner" or narrow side of the field due to the large amount of space the receiver has in which to operate.

blessed with terrific size (6-1, 195-pounds) for the position, Mitchell has struggled with injuries throughout his career. but when healthy he is completely dominant. what was most impressive, though, about Mitchell's performance as a field corner against Iowa is that he was matched up in one-on-one man coverage with ZERO safety help for the entire contest. the two safeties were busy trying to help out the other cornerback and help stop the Hawkeye running game, and they left Mitchell alone on an island ... and he literally shut down the wide side of the field. for the whole game.

Mitchell allowed just one completion (for 3 yards) in the game. he was only thrown at on two other occasions: he broke up one pass and the other was an obvious throw-away by the Iowa quarterback because of his outstanding coverage. that, my friends, is the definition of a shut-down corner.

i doubt that i'll ever get the chance to see Caleb Mitchell play again, but the guy is a seriously talented cornerback.
