despite his injury problems again this season, Gerhart was ranked second in the Pac-10 in rushing going into this past week's games. if he hadn't again gotten banged up, this time a groin strain that he tried to play through but that made him miss most of the game, he would've surpassed 1,000 yards on Saturday.

if he stays healthy, always a concern with this talented kid, he should easily set the new Stanford single-season rushing record which is currently held by "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell, another big white back with speed.

he has stated that he should be 100% for this weekend's game. hopefully he will shine against the perenially most-hyped team in college football.

wouldn't that be sweet?!?!

If the NFL were fair Gerhart should be a guy who should be drafted in the mid second round of the NFL draft. He'd be a late 1st rounder if he didn't have the knee history. But according to Nfldraftscout.com Gerhart isn't even projected to be drafted.

Gerhart is a lot like Chris Beanie Wells who JC also recently compared to Hillis too. But Wells is supposed to be a very early 1st round pick and Gerhart not even be drafted...hmmm?

I think Jake Sharp is a guy the NFL should consider taking in the mid to late 1st round. The guy is a freak athlete and only needs to improve his running vision a bit to become a complete stud! He has come on very strong now that Mangino is using him correctly! Both Gerhart and Sharp are better than Brian Leonard IMO. We need to see these guys run the ball!Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Congrats to Toby! He is 10 yards from 100 against USC and I really hope Stanford can pull of the upset, although it is looking less likely now.

They use Toby so uncreatively. They run him about 75% of the time on first down during the season. USC started to pick up on this. They ran Toby 80% of the time on first down during the first half and USC adjusted.

Also, Every single time it was 3rd and 4 or more they never even tried a draw play once to throw USC off. Stanford just kept throwing incomplete passes after Pritchard would get pressured on third and long.

I was sickened by Stanford's play calling!

It's amazing with the horrible play calling that Gerhart still got 101 yards on 4.4 yards per carry possibly against the best college D in the last 15 years!

I wasn't able to watch or listen tothe game Tough, so I couldn't see what youare talking about, but I agree that it is a feat for Toby to be able to gain that many yards against that defense. Sad stuff about the playcalling.

Stanford junior Gerhart looking to go out on top: Linked by draftdaddy.com:

Toby Gerhart is just 51 yards short of Stanford's single-season rushing record and hopes to eclipse the mark this weekend in the Big Game, the Cardinal's annual matchup with rival California.

Jack Carey, USA TODAY
Spare time is not exactly plentiful for Toby Gerhart. And that's just the way he likes it.
As Stanford gets ready to close the regular season Saturday against old foe California in the Big Game, the Cardinal (5-6) are hoping for their first bowl bid since 2001, and junior running back Gerhart is closing in on the school's single-season rushing record. With 1,033 yards, Gerhart is 51 short of the 1,084 gained by Tommy Vardell in 1991.

But even if the Cardinal don't get a postseason bid, Gerhart won't have a lengthy personal offseason. By January he'll be preparing for another year as an outfielder for the Stanford baseball team, continuing the long tradition of multi-sport stars produced by the school, a list that includes John Elway, John Brodie and Ernie Nevers.

Gerhart's heroics are coming a little more than a year after he was lost for the season with a knee injury. After running for 140 yards on only 12 carries in less than three quarters against San Jose State in the second game of the season, Gerhart suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament. He was first expected to miss only a couple of weeks but then injured the knee more severely in practice and was shut down for the rest of the year. The team finished 4-8.

"I saw a bunch of doctors, and there was a big debate about whether surgery would be necessary or not," Gerhart says.

Ultimately, surgery was not performed, meaning strenuous rehabilitation would be necessary. Gerhart, however, did have some arthroscopic work done to clean up some cartilage.

The news was not universally good, however.

"Some doctors were saying I may never make it back as a running back, that the knee would always feel a little looser than before and I might be a step slower," he says. "So at that point, it was more of a motivational thing to get back out there."

It didn't take coach Jim Harbaugh long to see what could be in store this year. Gerhart ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns in a season-opening 36-28 victory against Oregon State and hasn't looked back.

Harbaugh has taken to calling the 6-1, 232-pound Gerhart, "Riggins" because his rugged running style reminds him of former Washington Redskins star John Riggins.

"His durability is phenomenal," says Harbaugh. "Toby is a man. USC has four running backs who might end up in the NFL, but I'd take my guy."

After dealing with his knee issues early last baseball season, Gerhart ended up hitting .240 with seven home runs to help the Cardinal reach the College World Series.

When the team returned from Omaha in late June, he was only a couple of weeks from starting summer workouts with his football teammates.

Despite bouncing from one sport to the other, the management, science and engineering major has a 3.2 grade-point average. Time management and being able to consistently keep up with his studies are important, he says.

"I don't feel like there's a lot of stress one way or the other, and I always have time to do other things, even a social life," he says. "I'm not too bogged down."

Having the ability to play more than one sport in college was a key part of his attraction to Stanford after a spectacular high school career. At Norco (Calif.) High, Gerhart broke the state career rushing record by more than 1,000 yards, finishing with 9,622.

UCLA was also a finalist.

"I was drawn by the tradition of the two-sport athlete here and the academics, of course," he says. "Plus, the football program had been down, and I wanted to be part of turning the program around and making a difference."

What a superstar! This kid is special. As good as he is in Baseball, his future should be in the NFL. I hope he doesn't make the same mistake that Samardzja did and just go into the Major Leagues. Jeff Sam. was made to be a wide receiver just like Toby is made to be a everydown running back in the NFL. I'm really hoping he comes back for his senior season and kicks ass again. I love watching him run the ball. Good luck to Toby and the Cardinals tommorow. It would be fitting to see them make a bowl game.

Don't worry his future is in football. If you hit .240 at the college level with metal bats your not a blue chip prospect. Guys like McGwire hit .350+ at the collegiate level. I just hope he is given a legitimate shot to start or at least contribute at the next level.

yeah, i know nothing of baseball

but i would hate to lose him to it... it's bad enough not having Jeff S. playing wide out in the NFL, we can hardly afford one of the best 3 white running back prospects to pick baseball over football!

Toby Gerhart 2008 season Mainly two games, one against oregon st and the other against usc. They had Stanford highlights of every game up on youtube, but in most of them, it was like Toby didnt even exist except maybe on a short td run, missing quite a few big runs from this season. You would get the impression that Kimble was the main back from watching their videos even though Toby got over 1,000 yards rushing this season.

Here's a Draft Daddy update on Toby:

Stanford football fans are getting some unexpected great news this spring. A few months ago 1,100 yard rusher Toby Gerhart told the media he would give up football if he was selected high enough in Major League Baseball's 2009 draft. But at this point, the Cardinal's top football player, who coach Harbaugh has compared to John Riggins, is only only hitting .184 and striking out at alarming rate for the school's baseball team. While many in the Bay Area media have suggested he's equally talented in both sports and would be better off pursuing a pro baseball career, we've seen no rational evidence to suggest that's true. Matter of fact, we see the opposite -- he's certainly a high impact Pac-10 tailback, yet appears to be a low impact, perhaps sub-par, Pac-10 outfielder.... Checkout DD.com's Class of 2010 Tailback & Fullback Watch-list (last updated 2/05/09).

This is great news although the baseball season is only a month old. I hope he continues to struggle so that he does come back. He is my favorite player in the Pac Ten Conf. He can lead the league in rushing this year if he stays healthy. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Nice DraftDaddy quote on Toby. I reeeeeeally like DD's commentary and opinions. Quite fair and balanced.

RB Toby Gerhart, Stanford -- First Stanford running back to rush for over 1,000 yards since 1991. Would be a legit Heisman candidate if he went to a top 25 program and focused only on football.

when assked during a question and answer session Gerhart was asked how many yards he would rush for this year and his response was 2000 to the applause of the crowd. I only hope he can deliver 2000 yards means he's a certain 1st round pick.
