No doubt, Harbaugh blew it at the end of the game. Happens to a lot of coaches. Bottom line is that he has put together a very good program and has enabled great white players such as the Toby G. to really shine. He's more than forgiven in my book. As for Toby, he's a very intelligent young man. He clearly knows what it's like to make the mistake of playing white as a RB in 1A ball. He also knows the NFL is not going to give him, a white TB, the benefit of the doubt at the next level. So, being the smart, capable fella that he is, I really do not see him in the NFL. Nope, he's too savvy for that. Instead, he'll probably pursue a baseball career like Jeff Samardzija has done from Notre Dame. Personally, I don't think the NFL should be given another opportunity to ruin a career of a great young white player like Toby G. What I'd really like to see is a guy like Toby announce he's going into baseball because white running backs and receivers are not given a decent chance to play and succeed in the NFL.

One writer would vote for Toby for Heisman today. http://www.rockymounttelegram.com/sports/grillo-heisman-race-hasnt-panned-out-the-way-many-thought-972481.html

When it comes to the 2009 Heisman Trophy, you can invoke the immortal words of former NFL head coach Dennis Green.

"They are who we thought they were,"Â￾ he announced at one post-game press conference following a bitter loss.

There's nothing bitter about the Heisman race, but a couple of players
in contention for the most coveted award in amateur sports are who we
thought they were, minus one.

At the beginning of the season,
one of the triumvirate at quarterback â€" Tim Tebow at Florida, Colt
McCoy at Texas or Oklahoma's

Sam Bradford, who won last year's trophy â€" seemed a lock to win the Heisman in 2009.

Bradford got hurt early and has missed most of the season.

Tebow and McCoy have played well, but they're not wowing anyone with their personal statistics.

Now the race for the Heisman is wide open, and it may not go to a
quarterback, which would have been a huge upset three months ago.

A trio of running backs are very much in contention for the award.
Alabama's Mark Ingram, Clemson's electrifying C.J. Spiller or
Stanford's Toby Gerhart conceivably could walk away with the prize Dec.
12 in New York City.

If you read this column, you know I think
the world of Spiller. He's quite likely to be the first player taken in
the next NFL draft.

Gerhart is the guy who I find intriguing.

I was out in Southern California on one of my sojourns to San Diego at the end of his senior year in high school.

All I saw was some footage of him in a story on the day he committed to
Stanford. It was jaw-droppingly good, and conventional wisdom had him
going to Southern California to play for Pete Carroll.

But
apparently, in one of those Joe Paterno wanted Jim Kelly to play
linebacker; Auburn wanted Phillip Rivers to play tight end; LSU wanted
to find a place for Marshall Faulk in its defensive backfield
scenarios, Pete Carroll wanted Gerhart to line up at fullback. You're
either a tailback or you're a fullback.

Toby Gerhart is a tailback.

After he eliminated Southern Cal, Gerhart opted to go with the
Cardinals over Notre Dame. He's rushed for a school record 1,569 yards
and 23 touchdowns this season with a game remaining versus Notre Dame
on Saturday.

One refrain you're going to hear over and over
until they hand the trophy to the winner is that Alabama has never had
a Heisman Trophy winner.

Linebacker Lee Roy Jordan was fourth
in 1962; wide receiver David Palmer finished third in 1993 and
quarterback Jay Barker was fifth in '94.

I always favored
running backs when I had a vote in the Heisman. If I had a ballot right
now it would be No.1 Toby Gerhart, No. 2 C.J. Spiller and No.3 Mark
Ingram.

A recent poll of about 12 "experts"Â￾ at ESPN had Ingram claiming the hardware convincingly.

Man, why would anyone vote for Spiller? Maybe he's "electrifying," but his numbers are mediocre at best. It isn't like he's set the college football world on fire. He' rushed for 894 yards, averaged 5.2 yards a carry, and he's scored 11 TDs. Those are Heisman numbers? Maybe in 1959. Plus Spiller plays in the ACC, which isn't exactly the premier conference. Gerhart has been the most exciting and dominant back in college football, and his team scored the most points ever on USC, in the Colisseum. Unless Spiller or Ingram busts out a 400 yard game in the next couple of weeks, the statue should be Gerhart's

Samardzija made the wrong decision. He looks to be a journeyman at best as a pitcher. At worst he would have been drafted in the second round like Jordy Nelson andmight still beserving his "racial apprenticeship" as a third receiver with a chance to be a starter. Gerhart is a football player, we need him to go on to the NFL even though we have to keep it in perspective because even if he is used as a feature runner, the party line of the media and DWFs will be that he's the exception that proves the rule. But Gerhart has probably done more already to raise awareness of thestereotyping of White football players than anyone before him. Edited by: Don Wassall

Gerhart is like a superman of running backs. He is as tough as the man of steel. He has very good speed for a big man! What I love the most though is that he gets stronger as the game goes on. He also has the feet of a dancer. The perfect combonation required to be an all american running back and to start on Sundays. If he went to Baseball, I personally would be devatated. He has to go to the nfl. I would love to see him go to the Patriots. He would look great in the red, white and blue. Imagine that. I already love New England, but if they got Gerhart. Wow.

Was this supposed to be some sort of joke? I guess it was so funny I forgot to laugh.

This video is amazing. I love when he outruns the black DB, then it cuts to the DB walking away looking disappointed. A friend of mine mentioned how shocked he was to see Gerhert outrun DBs against Cal and USC. Yet then later said he would probably make a better FB or TE in the NFL

Younger fans ie somebody in their twenties were only born around the time of the last white back that rushed for 1k yards. So they automatically assume that he can't do it at the next level or if they have somewhat of a clue will assume he will be switched to fullback, h-back or tight end. You need to be about 35 to remember James, Riggins, Van Eeghan, Carpenter and other backs like that.

Again, cheers, dwid! You've done a world of good with these YouTube videos. The Sam McGuffie one you did has almost 70,000 views as well.

Not to sounds spoiled, but would it be possible to get your hands on some new footage from this year?

I'm with PhillyBirds! We have a great talent like dwid, and so many great Toby highlights from 2009. Here's hoping he'll have some time to put together another 5-star video!

What Gerhart has going for him that the others don't is that he has both the numbers and a winning program. This shows he is getting results and that can't be denied. Leonard did not have many rushing yards, and Hillis didn't either. While there are white guys that get over a thousand yards many of them are in weaker divisions. I think there is no dobt that Toby will be an effective NFL running back.

I agree the Texans could use him so can the Packers, and even the Chargers could draft him with an overrated L. T. at the end of his career. I expect Toby to go somewhere in the 1st round possibly middle to late some team will say the hell with race and draft him because he is the best available player regardless of race. Lets remember the NFL is all about ticket sales and the team who lets Toby run the ball will have a dramatic increase just because the white fan base will want to watch this guy play. I bet you I'm right on this one.

You'd think this would be the case, but take a look at Jacob Hester. He rushed for 1,100 yards in the highly-touted SEC "God-conference" in 2007. On a National Championship team, too! For all the good it's done him so far, he might as well have ran in Division-III

guys, but all these guys were already labeled FULLBACKS! and willingly blocked throughout most of their carriers! i mean, props to coach for giving hester the carries in his senior year, he recognized his talent but all of the other mentioned above were already only seen as fullbacks. Leonard is actually a runningback in the NFL at the moment, just not getting a lot of action.

Gerhart still solidly in the number 2 position for the Heisman trophy. We should all be very greatful for Toby's thrashing of USC, for if he hadn't he'd probably be on the outside looking in for a trip to NY. I'm hoping for two things: The white voters will break for Toby. Even I've heard people starting to cheer for Toby because they want to see "a white RB" succeed! And two, I'm hoping for FBS record 410 yards (1 90 yd TD, 2 60 yd TDs, 2 20 yd TDs, an extra short yard TD, and 1 big receiving TD, with lots of other big carries). I hope Toby's performance is so demoralizing to ND, that Weiss leaves the game early in the 4th quarter!

http://espn.go.com/college-football/heisman09/index

2. Toby Gerhart, Stanford: It's hard to knock Gerhart for Stanford's loss to Cal on Saturday. He rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns, while also coming up big with a fourth-quarter catch that he took 29 yards to the Cal 13-yard line with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

The bruising back currently ranks third in the FBS in rushing yards per game (139.2) and has hit pay-dirt 23 times this season. Plus, how many individuals give a more determined effort on a weekly basis than Gerhart? Not many from what I have seen.

No doubt if your a white runningback/tailback and you want a shot...your chances are better at Stanford if your ACT is high enough....Tyler Gaffney could be next in linewith Brandon Bourbon from MO...can't help but root for a team like this!

*Brad"Colonel" Muster was a 1st round pick by the Bears in 88'...he was a "big" tailback at 6'3" 235(great reciever)...yet they phased him into the fullback-role blocking for Neal Anderson. This is the same dude that had 204 yards rushing vs Cal in 84'/ and 78 receptions in 85'...nagging injuries shortened his NFL career....1990 was his best season with 664 yards rushing/ 47 rec 452 yds

*"Touchdown" Tommy Vardell6'-1" 238was a 1st Round pick in 91' (9th pick overall) was a "tweener" short-yardage specialist had the single seasonrushing record at Stanford til Gerhart broke it....and had some unfortunate injuries playing fullback/scored 22 career TD's in 8 seasons w/NFL....blocked for Barry Sanders career year 2,053yds back in 97-98'

*Jon Volpe 5'-7" 200 was undrafted; given try-out w/ Steelers..but opted forthe CFL/ wasRookie of the Year in 1991(1,395yds 16TD's)...hadsome good years/then contract dispute/tried out with Steelers in 95'..shoulder injury in preseason ended his career

None of these guys have the "total package" like Toby Gerhart!! Gotta keep the faith he's gonna get his fair-shot as a "feature-back" in the NFL!

Great post and history there 22! We have to remember that Gerhart has done nearly everything possible to put himself in a great position for the NFL. The only thing I can see him do more is shed 10-15 lbs to help with his 40 yd time. We have to remember that him getting a fair shot requires a little bit of "luck" too. Sometimes if someone hangs tough, keeps the faith, pushes themselves to the limit like Gerhart has, good things DO HAPPEN! Let's keep up hope that Gerhart scorches the ND defense like never before (sorry to Kyle McCarthy and Harrison Smith, it will be Toby's day on Saturday!). The T-Train will be rolling full-steam ahead in Palo Alto!

I know it's not much, but in the promo for the Stanford-Notre Dame game on ESPN this weekend, the guy doing the commercial called Gerhart a "Heisman Hopeful."

I don't think you can compare Gerhart and Hester. Gerhart carries the load for a not very talented Stanford team. Hester had one of the best lines in college fottball blocking for him. Hester had 1,100 4.9 avg and 11 td rushing yards ranked 35th rushing in college football. Gerhart has 1,500 ranked second 5.4 avg and 23 td with two games left to go. Everyone I've talked to includeing black people agree that Gerhart is one of the top 3 runningbacks in college football and a first or second round pick.

Man o' man...I'm hoping Toby puts up 200+ & a 2-3 TDs on the Irish. He needs to distance himself from overhyped "affletes" Ingram & Spiller (who he's bigger & stronger than).
