SAO PAULO (AP)â€â€Michelle Splitter, a promising women's basketball player in Brazil, died of leukemia. She was 19.
She underwent a bone marrow transplant in January and died Monday night in Campinas, the Brazilian basketball federation said. She was initially diagnosed with leukemia in 2004, and returned to the game after treatment. The disease returned last March.
Splitter, a center, made Brazil's senior team for a series of exhibition games at the beginning of last year.
She was sister of basketball player Tiago Splitter, who was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in 2007.
