The War on Drugs

With all the talk these days about our country's mounting debt all our government does is just keep spending. A significant chunk of this spending, $40 billion combined at the federal and local level, goes towards the so-called War on Drugs. I just wanted to start this thread to give you intelligent, and dare I say open thinkers, a chance to give your two cents about this ongoing almost 40 year "war".

My personal opinion is that this on-going war is just another sphere through which the government has the power to strip away the rights of individuals. It's another branch of government that has corrupt lobbyists pushing legislators to craft laws and bills aimed at making their industry whether it is, drug testing or prison building, more profitable. Hence the aim of the war isn't really to make the country any safer or healthier but rather make big daddy government looking over your shoulder at all times. Drugs have become cheaper and easier to get than ever. Also as Ron Paul has said its not the government's responsibility to police people on what they can and cannot put in their own bodies. This is just another instance of America becoming the "nanny state". Let adults make their own decisions and let them pay the consequences of their actions. It's crazy to think that authority has the power to make me a criminal for putting whatever substance I want into my body ON MY PROPERTY as long as I am not hurting anybody else.

Have at it guys...

Don,

Interesting that you bring this up. I put a letter to the editor in the local paper about the war on drugs and brought these same points up. It brough a lot of favorable comment and only one negative response. I think a lot of mature people have long since seen through the charade of the "drug War" and know it's a bunch of baloney. However, the bulk of the people aren't thinking well and are easily led and unfortunately, nothing will change.
