Big time win yesterday in The Players Championship by Sergio, who won in style with great clutch playover a "journeyman" who seemed destined to win. This tournament isn't a major yet but is clearly the most prestigious event after the four official majors and is treated like one.

Garcia has been hounded by the Caste media in recent years for his putting problems and failure to win a major, much as Phil Mickelsen was relentlessly pummeled with questions about not winning a major. Garcia isn't very good at hiding his disgust with the media, which is a big plus as far as I'm concerned. After all he's still only 28, has more tour victories than any player under the age of 30, is charismatic and has a "room brightening smile," yet is constantly criticized.

Even the caste announcers and commentators were agreeing yesterday that tee to green Garcia is as good as anyone, even His Lordship. So if he can maintain his confidence in his putting stroke there's no reasonSergio can't be a top five player for years to come and win some majors.

Ah, but the media did put their spin on things. What I didn't like was Sergio first thanking Tiger that he wasn't there. And though I don't think he meant any harm, he cheapened his own win. ESPN has been showing him saying that non-stop. Either way congrats to Sergio for going out and winning. Hopefully he can get on a roll.

Garcia is once again playing well at The Players Championship. He's jumped to the top of the leaderboard by shooting 7 under today. He started slow but surged on the back 9 (actually holes 1-9), recording birdies on 6 of the 9 holes. 5 of which came in a row.

Unfortunately, Eldrick is also playing well sitting 1 back. Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker and Roberto Castro (who's fading after an absurd 9 under yesterday) are all currently playing and could still end up the leader in the clubhouse. Should make for an interesting weekend.

Sergio's tied with Woods for the lead with 5 holes left. Woods was three up at the turn and had already been crowned champion by Johnny Miller, who's probably wearing one of Tiger's used jockstraps today, but sent a tee shot into water and ended up with a double bogey. Eight others are within two shots of the lead, so we'll see if Woods pulls it out. Garcia isn't known for his clutch play but I'll be rooting for him.

Garcia just hit into the water on the famous 17th hole island green par 3. Looks like Woods will win his first Players championship since 2001.

Edit: Sergio just did it again -- two straight shots into the water! The already large amount of journalists and DWFs that ridicule his underachieving career will eat this up.

Sergio feeds the tiger cult and self destructs with two in the drink at 17.

And Sergio completes the meltdown by teeing off into the water on 18 as well, going +6 on the last two holes. And he finishes his round and flashes a big smile. Lots of physical talent, more than terrific Spanish golfers like Ballesteros and Olazabal, but weak mentally. Reminds me of watching Marc-Andre Fleury collapse under pressure in the Stanley Cup playoffs every spring.

That was horrible. This Sergio seemed to be the biggest crybaby this weekend at the Players championship.
