Minor is doubtful for this Saturday with a shoulder injury. McGuffie will get some carries and the papers are pimping for Micheal Shaw to get a lot of playing time. Note that even though Brandon Minor has been the only guy getting carries the last few games and is the unquestioned starter McGuffie still leads the team in yards. You would think that would make him a lock for the number one slot but for some reason no.

Well truly Shaw has been more productive with his carries (YPC) than Sam (the fans are quick to call for the benching of a white RB as we know). However, that is mostly because Shaw often surprised the defense when he unexpectedly got the ball in a duel set backfield and because the blocking was atrocious for Sam in his first couple games. Sam has a more impresssive resume by far when you look back at H.S and he certainly has all the measurables and skill.

What really should happen in a fair world is Sam gets the start and Shaw gets maybe 30-40% of the carries. I think Sam is due for a big game though and will make the most of his opportunity and put the "Shaw for starter" movement on delay! GO MATRIX!

Yeah Sam should certainly think about transfering after this year. But if I were him I might wait until after next year depending on the scent of things he gets from Rich Rod the rest of the year. The Wolverine offense will be much better next year and I still think Sam is meant for the spread.

There was "zero" reason for him to get zero carries with Minor out and Shaw struggling. The team has done nothing to help his career this year. They threw him into the mix day one when the o-line didn't know what to do in the first two games. You should have seen message boards after Sam's first game against Utah calling for his benching. Then RR and the DWFs blamed Sam (the white RB) for their failures at mid-season.

The best indicator of future behavior by a coach the mind set of a team's fans is present behavior. If Sam does transfer he would have to look at the team's depth chart, their past use of white players and of course see how badly the coach says they want to bring him in when Sam reaches out to other teams. I am really not liking the smell of this after this game. One game can tell you a lot! Sam is still high on many NFL draft site's websites for the 2012 class, but he will drop quickly if he doesn't play.

Sam just put a fork in his own NFL aspirations. He practiced all week, then said he was too banged up to play. There is just too slim a margin for error if you're a white running back. What was he thinking?

It is a tough call really. Does a white skill player keep himself out of the game if he isn't 100% to get totally healed, or does he play and risk making it worse and having to miss even more time? Its a bad situation either way.

But he's a --Football Player! You can't be a running back in the NFL if you can't play hurt.

Is that why he didn't play? Because like you said, I had read that he was supposed to be active for the game. Maybe this isn't as bad as we thought. Maybe RR just simply wanted to give the ball to Carlos Brown on "Senior day" since Shaw was struggling and Sam said he was too banged up to play. Sam would have had a big day I think if he did play, the line opened up holes well for Brown, but Brown didn't get as many yards out of them as I think Sam would have or maybe even Shaw would have if he was in on those plays.

It depends what the injury is really. Sam needed an other opportunity to shine with the o-line clicking better now. He also needs some more creative play calling like they were giving to Brown at times like those two draw plays he got. If Sam played and only managed 3 YPC because he was banged up, that would surely hurt him more than sitting out would. Shaw didn't do anything impressive this game and Brown only galloped for yards through big time blocking! If Minor is out McGuffie absolutely has to get back in the line-up this week to make the most of it!

A concussion is nothing to play around with. He needs to be 100% sure that his body/head is ready to take a beating again. Being a running back is probably the toughest position to play physically in all of football. The amount of touches requires you to get beat up week after week. I respect his decision to keep himself out for another week. He is afterall only a freshman and Michighan is horrible. Sam will have plenty of time to shine.

Michigan likely without top QB, RB at Ohio State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan might be missing some key players at Ohio State.

Coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday he doubts quarterback Steven Threet or running back Sam McGuffie will play against the 10th-ranked Buckeyes.

Rodriguez says Threet has a shoulder injury, and McGuffie had a death in his family.

Running back Brandon Minor says he will play in Michigan's finale after missing a game with rib and shoulder injuries.

Ohio State is a 19-point favorite, matching the largest spread in the rivalry, and is a win away from earning at least a share of a fourth consecutive Big Ten title.

Michigan has lost a school-record eight games in Rodriguez's debut season and will not play in a bowl game for the first time since 1974.

this explains everything, my sympathies to Sam

A lot of rumors out there on the blogs. I hope he does transfer. If he's going home due to a death in the family, maybe he won't come back. I'd like to see him somewhere like White-friendly Texas Tech. Big-Ten offenses are in the stone age. And the last prominent White feature back I can remember was Michigan State's Blake Ezor in the late 80's.

All the discussion on the blog is about how Sam is depressed, and not just depressed but "clinically depressed"! Yeah I'd be depressed too if I was producing and was benched for no reason (other then being white). The DWF on that blog can't even concieve of race as a reason, doesn't even enter their minds. They say he'll be a good "third down back" catching the ball out of the backfield.

I think we've come up with another whites-only position: third down back. Mcguffie STILL leads the team in rushing even though he hasn't been featured for about 5 weeks. Yes I'd transfer too if I was treated like that.

Not to discount Sam's playing time "issues," but it seems highly presumptuous to name his "depression"- clinical or otherwise- on the issue of race. After all he's hundreds of miles away from his family and friends and just experienced a death in his family. Give the kid some respect before jumping into his personal life.

That being said, I'd like to see him end up somewhere in Texas too. A motivated Sam McGuffie is an effective Sam McGuffie, which is ultimately what we all want to see.

Texas Tech could actually be an option b/c as icsept said they are utilizing the run more. If they bring McGuffie in they will likely run even more. What about Texas? Would they use McGuffie? Their fans probably aren't as drunken as Michigan's are and they remember Sam back down there in Texas from his h.s career. Even Texas (with Shipley and Blake Gideon) is more white friendly than RR's Michigan! Colt McCoy is back for at least one more year, maybe two.

McGuffie could shine in either of those offenses. I just hope they would run the ball enough for him to reach 1500 yards if he goes to Texas Tech as his YPC will undoubtably be higher next year if he goes there. But if Sam becomes too much of a receiving back the NFL might try to convert him to WR if he makes it there.

Yes they still have to sit out a year, but it will be like a redshirt year for Sam.

I don't know about Texas, they never offered him a scholarship...

A transfer year might do Sam McGuffie some good. He needs to be a little bigger to withstand the punishment if he wants to carry the load as a feature back, IMO.

My point was that Sam wasn't depressed just upset at earning the number one back spot and getting benched none-the-less. The reason for that is his skin color because it certainly wasn't his production. The depression talk is a load of crap to avoid the issue that he is bummed about being unfairly relegated to the bench. I'm not jumping into his personal life, the people talking about him being depressed are the ones doing that.

I hate to see posts like this on this site. McGuffie is NOT to small, I've seen nearly every carry he's had there and his toughness in getting the extra yards is unquestioned. He is just as big if not bigger then many other black running backs. He's gained lots of yards when he's played. WHY does he need to be bigger? Are there any black RB's that need to get bigger? I don't hear about them.

Sam unfairly lost his position as the number one back and he is upset, he should transfer. I for one cheer on a white back that insists upon being treated fairly instead of being a "team player" and sitting on the bench or bulking up to be a fullback (maybe that's what is meant by "getting bigger").

Sam was fun to watch play, for once I enjoyed watching and going to Michigan games again. He played great, was always a threat to break a long one, has the best hands on the team (receivers included), was a workhorse, got tough yards. If he was black he would be the unquestioned starter and profiled every week in the media. As it is he is benched and looking at fighting three guys for a starting spot, Ridiculous!
