Wick was promoted to Low-A Peoria on Tuesday, six weeks after emerging as the organization’s breakout star by swatting home runs and superstitiously swearing by his socks.


The British Columbia native, a ninth-round pick in 2012 out of Cypress College, hit 10 home runs in 56 games as a 20-year-old for Rookie League Johnson City in 2013.



But after a stint at extended spring training this year, he exploded on the scene for short-season State College. Wick mashed two homers and five RBIs on Opening Night, and hasn’t stopped since.



It took him just 19 games to break the affiliate home run record, and after 35 games he left the New York Penn League as the leader in all three Triple Crown categories as well as hits, doubles, on base percentage, slugging and OPS.

PEORIA -- Rowan Wick launched one of the longest home runs seen at Dozer Park to help the Peoria Chiefs hang in for the long haul in the Midwest League playoff race Wednesday.

"I had just fouled off a fastball, so I was thinking changeup," said Wick, whose drive was estimated at 430 feet.

After dominating at State College in the New York-Penn League–(.378, 14 HR, 38 RBIs, 97 TB in 35 games) the outfielder was recently promoted to Peoria and is beginning to again find traction at the plate. But after being viewed as the next Babe Ruth, the slugger is now having to learn a new league and face tougher competition.

“The guys at State College, they’re more like fresh out of college guys trying to show off their fastballs,†explained Wick of the difference between the two leagues. “They don’t really throw their off-speed for strikes–here they do that a lot and the lefties out of the bullpen have way better stuff. Starters are just more consistent with fastballs and throwing strikes and the off-speed for strikes.â€
In 15 games with Peoria, Wick has 10 hits in 55 at-bats with 2 home runs.
“Yeah, I’m trying to get used to it here but it’s a struggle,†stated Rowan. “Hopefully, I can do something coming up here in the next few games.â€
The 21-year old North Vancouver, BC native was drafted by St. Louis in the 9th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Cypress College in California. He also played on the Canadian National Team in the IBAF World Junior Championships–where he batted .310 with a pair of homers and six RBIs in eight games.
Wick (6’3, 22o) bats left, but throws right and has played both corner outfield spots this year after mixing in 25 games behind the plate last year at Johnson City.
Besides his home runs at State College–in which he needed only 19 games to set the franchise mark with 11–Wick also displayed the ability to throw out runners and why he’s nicknamed the “Canadian Cannonâ€.
