One of the many things that occurred to me over the last few years is that every black athlete is described as having a "room brightening smile" or some variation thereof. Every afflete has a "room brightening smile" but no non-black athlete ever has been described as such by the corporate media or its announcers.

Now, I feel bad for Kenny McKinley (the Broncos player who just killed himself) but take a look at this reporting. I swear that the "room brightening smile" adjective is mandatory for reporters, announcers and coaches.

"Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room," Denver head coach Josh McDaniels said."

Later on in the story the ol' caste coach proclaimed:

"I saw him here. He came to the Georgia game. He seemed in good spirits," Spurrier said, according to The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C.. "He had a great smile, like he always had."

Here is a link to the room brightening article: http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/09/20/kenny-mckinley-dead-suicide/

The "room brigntening smile" phenomenom has been well documented here, originally by the esteemed Don Wassall who noted this peculiar fascination of the media years ago. The thesis was expanded by yours truly who put forth the postulate that the "room brightening smile" was actually the modern PC version of "watermelon grin" that was once an ubiquitous reference to any negro with a big smile.

This is an example of the media continuing to use racist language but switching it so that it becomes a "positive". The usage is so common that we often refer to it here in a humorous vein.

Thanks Jaxvid. I did discover the term here and now I literally see it everywhere. It is comical that every single caste announcer/reporter uses it to describe every single black afflete.

If anyone ever sees this term applied to a white or non-black athlete please post it here as it will be a first for me.

It IS used everywhere. I guess they can't think of anything else worthwhile to say about a guy. Think about that, is that what you would like people to remember you for--yes he's dead but he had a nice smile--seems so lame that it's really a put down.

There are many variations on the theme too. "room brighting smile", "1000-watt smile", "smile that lights up the room", I guess they don't realize that they are making a comment on the fact that black people's teeth look so white in comparison to their dark skin.

How come you never hear anyone say something like, gee his smile is so bright you could take him into a dark room and tell him a joke and you'd be able to see your way around!

Your explanations and opinions of this peculiar verbal fad are absolutely accurate.

I used to think of the worn-out phrase "Room Brightening Smile"Â￾ as one of the precious few relics of the media's latent racism (as you said, "Watermelon Grin"Â￾) towards blacks. Then I realized than no amount of anti-black idiom has been permitted for decades.

I now believe the phrase is deliberately repeated in order to continually mention the color contrast of black skin against white teeth. Said contrast cannot be achieved by whites, thus, the always-condescending "black is beautiful"Â￾ fallacy continues.

This is still my all-time favorite. This is sheer brilliance, I can't imagine any Cultural Marxist topping this piece of artistry by Karl Greenfeld:

"In profile, against the orange sun setting into the smog over the industrial badlands of northern New Jersey, Barber's facial structure is so defined that you imagine you know what he will look like in a thousand years, long after the flesh has decomposed and he is only bone. His face is all sharp angles and perfect planes. His broad smile bares gleaming white, evenly arrayed teeth, an extra helping of perfection after the symmetry of his features." -- Karl TaroGreenfeldof Sports Illustrated writing about TikiBarber

BTW, I dug up that quote from another classic, albeit contentious, CF thread:

A Toast to Tiki Barber http://www.castefootball.us/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5229&KW=Tiki&PN=2&title=a-toast-to-tiki-barber

Bizzarre! "...long after the flesh has decomposed and he is only bone" yup that's what you want people saying about you-"he looks like a skull head!" and meant to be complimentary!!! [IMG] good stuff...

This is pretty embarrassing. It is the mark not of a beta male but of an omega male.

I have never seen or heard of Karl Greenfeld but you just know he is a scared little nebbish. A simpering, stuttering puny little man who never ever fought back when he was picked on as a kid.

Has anyone ever read anything about the "room brightening smile" (or some variation of that stupid phrase) of a white or even non-black athlete?

I never have and I doubt such an example exists.

When I heard this on ESPN with the line of "a smile that could light up a room" I chuckled and immediately thought of this website

What's with all these limp-wrist "men" talking about the smile of another feller any ways? Sounds like the kind of "compliment" a sodomite would give to a dude.[IMG]

From U-of-M's Rivals board, just today ...

I]BlueByYou Post #732 JB, you spent a lot of time with C-Webb, did you not? Did you ever think that such a big-smiled, monstrous-physiqued, highly skilled kid would leave such a smirch on the program? [/i]

My guess is that the media's obsession with blacks' smiles spawns from their desire to portray Negroes as safe, friendly, and well-adjusted.

Very true, and this was proven to me once again yesterday.

I was watching PTI, and it turns out that Bill Simmons was sitting in for Mike Wilbon. I assume most people know who Simmons is, but if not, I can give you an elevator pitch: He's vehemently anti-white sports columnist for ESPN.com

Anyway, until yesterday, I had never seen what he looks like (except that small head-shot next to his columns), nor had I heard him speak.

Well, Bill Simmons is a little b*tch-man. He's quite small in stature, with small hands, a tiny neck, and a very effeminate, girly voice. In fact, if you close your eyes and listen, you'll think it's a 12-year old boy talking.

He was probably picked on quite a bit growing up, never had a shot to play any sports, was extremely jealous of all the white kids who did play varsity sports, and therefore, his only role models were most likely the affletes he saw on TV, whom he idolized and worshipped, which he still does today. And now that he has a forum to spew his drivel, he hardly ever holds back in mocking, insulting, and putting down white athletes.

He's a textbook definition of a DWF, and easily represents where 90% of American sports-writers come from these days.

Once I learned of this strange fact I really see it everywhere now. Basically, every white coach, reporter, announcer, fan, teammate is going to compliment a black man on his smile.

Strange country we live in. Can you imagine the average white man even 40 years ago complimenting a black man on his smile? Why have we (well, not us, but most whites) become such beta males in such a short period of time?

Believe it or not, there exists in the U.S. a White man who is the proud possessor of a room brightener:

Matt Kuchar is the face of golf in Atlanta this week at the Tour Championship, just like he was 10 years ago.
    There's one difference.
Actually, there's about 10 million differences.
Kuchar is the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup going into the final playoff event, which starts today at East Lake. That gives him a slight edge in the race for the $10 million bonus, the biggest payoff in golf.
It's hard to believe that Kuchar, perhaps the most celebrated amateur golfer at Georgia Tech since Bobby Jones, wasn't even sure he wanted to turn pro when he graduated a decade ago.
He had won the U.S. Amateur. He lit up Augusta National with his engaging smile and a game good enough to be the low amateur at the Masters in 1998. Then came the U.S. Open at Olympic Club, where he held his own against golf's best and tied for 14th.

"engaging smile" is NOT the same as "ROOM BRIGHTENING" or "1000-MEGAWATT". C'mon Don get your racial sterotypes straight!

Ah, but he lit up Augusta National, and in broad daylight yet! [IMG][IMG] Now that's a feat. That'sfar beyond a mere watermelon grin. Sorry, but Kuchar indeed has what must be objectively classified as a mega-room brightener. Edited by: Don Wassall

So a football player (guess what race) at Pace University tries to run over a cop with his car and gets shot dead. Of course, the media says it is racism and that the fine chap was "murdered." After all - how dare a cop - or any non-black - try to save his own life when a black wants to kill him.

So they talk to his high school principal about the guy and here is what he said:

"He had a great personality, a warm smile, and as his [football] coach said when we were talking earlier today, a very generous heart."Â￾
