Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. pleaded No Contest to assault last Tuesday for an incident on April 23 at a Denny's near the UCLA campus.

"I didn't do what he accused me of," Manning said Wednesday.

Manning and two other former UCLA football players were accused of kicking and punching a man in the face until he lost conciousness.

Manning was placed on three years probation and ordered to attend a year of anger management counseling. He must also complete 100 hours of community service. But Manning said, "It wasn't a plea where I'm saying, 'Yeah, I did it I'm wrong.'

"If I don't plea to this, I have to go through trial. We're in season now. Then I'd have to put it in front of a jury. I would rather put it all in my hands, be on probation, keeping my nose clean and not get into any trouble."

Manning acknowledged he exchanged words with the man and pushed his head, but he said he walked away after that. "I didn't see who he got into it with," Manning said. "I had walked away from the situation. When he started fighting someone. I had no idea who it was. ...I know it wasn't with me.

A day later Manning signed a five-year, $21 million contract with the Bears. In a statement issued Tuesday night, general manager Jerry Angelo called the incident "embarrassing."

The info above is from a 9-27 item from MSNBC. Phil Mushnick in the Oct 1 NY Post blasted TV sports for not covering this story. Mushnick quotes from the police report obtained from NBC sports.com. The victim said Manning called him "an ugly f***ing Jew" and a "****got." The victim is a UCLA student who is a Swedish citizen of Persian descent.

A civil suit was filed last May. The NFL could take action against Manning according to the MSNBC story.

The legal system sure does come down hard on black athletes, doesn't it?

Manning is trouble waiting to happen, butif fhe had called the man "an ugly f***ing Dago" and a "****got,"we probably never would have known about the incident. Mushnick is not about to let a slight against his own people go unreported.
