RB -- Brian Leonard

No offense to Alstott as he was a great FB but I am hoping a team looks at Leonard as more of a Jerome Bettis. I bet when the Bus came into the league in 94 or so he was about Leonard's weight of 230 and Bettis also had good quickness. Bettis was also drafted in the first round and was labeled a FB but he became the big bruising RB we are familiar with. I am hoping a team (maybe the Jets) draft him early.

From what I've seen of Leonard he is much faster and agile than either Alstott or Bettis although not as powerful. Can you imagine either Alstott or Bettis leaping over that defensive back like that? They probably would have ran over him. Leonard is a different type of back than either of those players. Leonard is also great receiving the ball.

Mel Kiper JR. who is not the most popular guy on this site (and for good reason) lists Leonard as one of the top 5 senior running backs...although of course, he lists him as a future fullback.

He also includes Brady Quinn and Jeff Samardzija as the top ranked seniors at their respective postions.

I get why yall dont like mel kiper...but in his defense when there is a great white athelete he has nothing but good things to say about him...and he doesnt used the "sneaky speed" or suprisingly fast phrases (that i ever heard)

The problem is its like he gives non white QBs a two limit quota a year where he picks two white guys that don't play 0-line or QB and pumps them up but not any other white athete. That my friend is the problem.

Here's a Leonard update. You gotta love the writer's matter-of-factattitude when he writes: "However, the buzz surrounding his accomplishments doesn't seem to faze the even-keeled Leonard, who managed to fly under the blue-chip recruit radar despite setting a New York state record for points scored (696) while running for 5,854 yards at Gouverneur High School."

I wonder whyBrian "flew under the radar"? Anyone have any theories? And let's see how much Shiano's lavish praise for Leonard translates into rushing attempts this season.

Rutgers' Leonard primed for strong season

Associated Press

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers University football coach Greg Schiano will never be mistaken for a subtle man, the type who abhors boasting and shies away from bragging about something.

And though he probably is more judicious now with his commentary than when he first arrived on campus in December 2000, he still speaks his mind often, and usually in glowing tones, when it comes to his players.

So, it was no surprise that when the name of Brian Leonard came up Saturday during media day at the school's Hale Center, Schiano had nothing praise.

"I've coached some great players over the years, some of the best who have played the game," said Schiano, who has mentored the likes of 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Ed Reed and Pro Bowler Dan Morgan during his coaching career. "I wouldn't trade Brian for any of them. I mean, Brian is that special."

Leonard is not the only star returning to the Scarlet Knights - also due back are 1,000-yard rusher Ray Rice and Clark Harris, the first-team all-Big East tight end - but the 6-foot-2, 235-pound senior running back is the team's primary offensive weapon. And he already ranks sixth on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,352 yards, third in career receptions with 169 and second in points scored with 242.

In spearheading Rutgers' rise to national awareness last season and an appearance in the Insight Bowl against Arizona State, Leonard rushed for 740 yards, caught 55 passes for 568 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. Those efforts earned him first-team All-American accolades from Pro Football Weekly for the second straight year.

However, the buzz surrounding his accomplishments doesn't seem to faze the even-keeled Leonard, who managed to fly under the blue-chip recruit radar despite setting a New York state record for points scored (696) while running for 5,854 yards at Gouverneur High School.

"When I got here, I was just hoping to get on the field, maybe make a block or two. I had no idea what was in store," Leonard said. "I never thought I'd get many carries. Then, the first spring I was here, (Schiano) was getting frustrated at the guys running the ball and he yelled out, 'Leonard, get in there.'

"The first play, I ran over about two or three guys and took it to the 50," he said. "The next play, I took it to about the 20, and then we went right in and scored after that."

A similar pattern has played out each of the past three seasons. With a career average of 4 yards per carry, Leonard hasn't ripped off many long runs but has shown he's capable, as evidenced by a magnificent 83-yard bolt in last season's opener at Illinois that allowed him to showcase both his speed and athleticism.

He broke free on the left side and hurdled a defender waiting to tackle him, then outraced any other potential tacklers.

"He's an exceptional football player," Schiano said. "The neat thing is every once in a while you get a guy with that kind of talent who is humble and a great teammate. He's just a special guy."

He's also glad Leonard decided to stay for his senior year instead of entering the NFL draft, a decision that came after Leonard weighed his options and talked to former Rutgers tight end Marco Battaglia, who went pro after his junior season of 1995.

"Marco told me to go with my heart, and my heart is here at Rutgers," Leonard said. "I love it here."

Last year Ray Rice had more carries than Leonard and you can expect the disparity to increase this year, especially with Schiano at the helm.

Leonard will assume a more "prominent" role as the lead blocker in many sets for Rice. We will hear about how unselfish a player he is and how he compares favorably to Rob Konrad. Thus setting him up for a glamorous NFL career where he will probably have a total of 15 rushing attempts over a four year period.

Keep in mind that Schiano has a doctorate in caste football etiquette, having been schooled at the "U",University of Miami for us krackers. He will see to it that Leonard's proper place has been establised by the 2007 NFL draft.

I hope Brian gets more carries than his teammates, but I won't hold my breath. In this Caste System era, all that usually leads to is disappointment. There is always a chance though!

If given the chance,Brian would get stronger as the game goes on similar to Kyle Bell. That is what big, quick power backs do.They wear down the defense. We can only hope that they showcase his talents alot more than last year.He should be a legitimate running back prospect for the NFL if given the chance.

SI.com ranks Leonard as "rising up the NFL draft charts." Why, because he's "done the job as a lead blocker, ballcarrier and pass catcher for the Scarlet Knights' explosive offense. After two games, Leonard leads the team with nine receptions and is averaging close to 3.5 yards on 11 carries. He also leads the way for Rutgers' top rusher, Ray Rice, who has run for 309 yards and four scores."

So he has just over 10 percent of the rushing yardage of Rice yet has enhanced his draft position. Yeah, that's it, Brian. Block, block, and block some more and maybe we'll let youblock in the NFL too if you're very lucky!

It seems as though white tailbacks cant even make it on the roster, much less start.

At least in making it to the NFL, even as a fullback, there's the possibility some team will use him for more than just blocking.

i am beginning to think that in a crazy way coach might even help him... he will get to NFL as a full-package fullback that can do it all - white fullback is still accetable, if somewhat of a rare animal, instead of great old-school runningback with awesome strength, speed and hands - after all those are not needed in today's league...

that is just messed up

Leonard unfortunately is the typical team first, humble white athlete. This site has talked extensively about white athletes standing up for themselves, ala give me the damn ball. Leonard just isn't that guy.

What is happening to Leonard would never happen to a black athlete with the same type of elite talent.Of course if Leonard was black, Schiano would never make him a caddie for a white player.

It is such a joke that Rutgers had the nerve to tout this kid has a Heisman canidate while we watch Schiano turn him into a future Jim Finn.

I know some optimists on this site had hope that Leonard would finally become that feature back in the NFL we all long for, but it just isn't going to happen.

Leonard is having a good game so far, 3 catches for 62 yards and 3 runs for 11 yards but it seems that it's all about Rice now... he gets all the red zone carries and most of the others too...

i don't think i ever wished an injury upon a fellow athlete but i am damn close right about now...

Its a day-um shame is what it is! It seems an insult to even push Brian for Heisman when you wont even depend on him to be your sole runner. Makes me wanna puke!

they should at least have decency to give him half of the carries, as a senior and guy that played his butt off for them... not even mentioning mocking Heisman candidacy...

Brian got a goalline carry only after Rice got stopped for a loss twice... 3rd and 5, TD Rutgers! good job number 23!

first TD was scored by Clark harris on a 45 yard pass from Teel, 3 minutes from the end of the second half it was the only pass thrown by Rutgers
smiley1.gif

his second rushing TD of the day, came from 4 yards out and took him too rushes! seems like he is beginning to get some red zone looks, just about time!

after rushing for 40 yards on 4 carries on another drive Brian was stopped just short of end zone, Rice got the TD, which was fair enough, as long as they keep giving Leonard a ball! so far he has 7 rushes for 48 yards and 2 TD (shame about that last one), 6.9 average.

Has anyone noticed the disorganization and hyper-active behavior
on the Howard sideline in this game? It truly looks like they don't
know what they are doing.

yup, Howard is a terrible team...

and, what do you know, Leonard got no more carries in second half (it's 4th quarter now and second string players are on the field)... of course Rice got some more, enough to score 2 TDs...

Leonard final stats are: 10 runs for 63 yards, 2 TDs and 3 catches for 27 yards.
Clark Harris caught two passes f0r 55 yards and 1 TD

PS freshman jack Corcoran, a big (6'1", 232 lbs) runningback from NJ played his first game, had couple of big runs.Edited by: backrow

yeah, but he should have gotten more than that, and could easily have another 2 TDs... but they'd rather give it to Rice (23 carries, 4.6 per carry) than Leonard (10 carries, 6.3 per carry). Should be more like 18-15.
Go figure

Howard is horrible, they are about as good as Harvard, I'm suprised that Rutgers would even schedule Howard. As for Leonard If he isn't there goal line runner what is he? The Rutgers offensive coaches need to be called out?

USA Today ran a HUGE article on the Rutgers football team today.
The picture of Brian Leonard took up half of the page. I believe they
put his picture in black & white to de-emphasize his race or to have
him perceived as a mulatto. The article had nothing but great things
to say about Leonard, but phrased them in an interesting way;

USA Today said:
Leonard doesn't just hurdle defenders. He gets
decent hang time and even does a twinkle toes-like step in midair as
if he's a reindeer pulling a sleigh. "When I first started doing it, the
guys were calling me Luigi, from Super Mario Bros., because I jump
and my legs keep moving," Leonard says with a laugh.

Why the word decent? The article has a photo of him jumping right
over a DB. Do they mean to say decent for a white guy, but a black
could do much better? Article

Leonard is the best running back in college. THE BEST. no question. i have nothing but superlatives to say about him, so i snicker at any hidden digs at his athletic ability. the guy is amazing.

the only other running back that i would mention that does as much for his team is little garrett wolfe at Northern Illinois. he's a "little" black running back that is plenty big enough to make plays.

when will these MSM morons realize that if a guy is good, then that's what should matter? i grow weary of their rhetoric.

i wouldn't take it as belittling leonard... guy was exagerating the way BL jumps over defenders... i mean if he's got time to do "twinkle toes-like step in midair" it's gotta be more than a decent hang time.
