"No racial or ethnic slurs"

I want everyone who supports this site to continue to write whatever they want, but at the same time I expect everyone to respect the guidelines and goals of Caste Football.

We have so much to say about sports and race that needs to be heard -- let's say it intelligently rather than venting frustrations.

When you post here, you are not only talking to your fellow Caste Football supporters, butalso to the general public.Write as if you are responding to a question from a talk show host. Some of the posts of late are embarrassing, to me personally, andare an insult to all the wonderful information and views that can be found on this site. If your agenda is simply to see how much dislike you can show of blacks there are plenty of other boards for that purpose. We stand for things here; we must aspire to bring out the best in our people and ourselves, otherwise we're no better than that which we claim to be against.

I've expressed my agreement with this sentiment several times, Don. Using slurs in a public area such as this (as opposed to being in one's living room) is at best unnecessary, at worst harmful. There's nothing morally wrong with it, I'll be clear about that. But it's just good strategy not to do it. I think we should look to the writers who deal with controversial issues- like David Duke, Bob Whitaker, and Pat Buchanan- and try to be articulate like they are.

We have a perfectly good term in "black." A simple, clear, five letter word that everybody can accept and use with zero negative results. Words like "Negro" and "mud" just aren't necessary, and will repel people who may otherwise stick around for awhile and hear what we have to say.

I can understand people's frustration about New Orleans. It's such a gruesome situation. But we still need to try to be as articulate and cool-headed as possible. And if worse comes to worst, you can always use the edit function once you've calmed down!

Last evening I listend briefly to a broadcast in my city, where I distinctly heard a male voice of Negro persuasion make this comment ( not word for word):" In the 1920's Negroes were used as sand bags in hurricanes. " In Milwaukee there is a little museum dedicated to the victims of Negro Lynchings. Since when is Negro a slur? Edited by: Bart

I don't think it's a bad word; in fact I use it... in the privacy of my living room. (Usually it's directed at the TV, which is quite often lately thanks to all these morons pushing their PC agenda in the wake of Katrina.) But I think a lot of people would have a knee-jerk reaction to it. Then again, much of what we write here would cause that reaction, so we shouldn't obsess about it too much. I don't think it's that big of a deal, morally speaking, but like Don implied, we should consider those who are not converted yet when choosing what words we use. If the term "Negro" is used in the midst of a post that is otherwise sensibly written, I think it'd be okay. The occasional loony, histrionic rant is worse than somewhat iffy terminology. For example, I've talked about Jews before, but I wasn't a lunatic about it.

I don't know how Don feels about that word in particular. It is his site, after all. What he thinks is obviously more important than what I think. But I will say this: if I had to choose between "Negro" and "African American," I would definitely choose the former!

I wasn't referring to "Negro" when I started this thread, it was the variations of the "n-word" that had been popping up. The n-word is banned by the bad word filter, so variations of it were being used to get around that.

Negro in most usages isn't offensive, just old-fashioned, really no different than using "Caucasian" as a term for whites.

All of my black classmates told me they prefer being called black rather than African-American. They said it is an incorrect term. I agree with them, so I will never use it.

Makes sense. Strategically I think "black" is better, but it's not a bad word per se.

Try referring to an Asian as a "Mongoloid" and see what happens.
