This will contend for the whitest squad in the NCAA tournament. North Dakota State beat Oakland for the Summit League's tournament bid. Only one black player for NDSU, who has league player of the year and borderline NBA prospect Ben Woodside at point guard. Woodside toasted Oakland's pg, NCAA assist leader Johnathan Jones, in a second-half comeback.

Would be great if both teams got in. Oakland is white-friendly with 6-4 senior Erik Kangas (No. 3 three-point shooter in NCAA), 6-9 soph Will Benson and 6-6 freshman stud athlete Drew Maynard all in the starting five, and 6-11 Rutgers transfer Dan Waterstradt off the bench.

Its a shame those boys had to attend those unknown schools. NDSU sent me a letter when I was a sophmore in High School. I hope they win it all, if they truly are the whitest team in the tournement. Last year I was for Davidson. I havent watched any hoops this year, so thanks for the heads up about these guys.Edited by: P-NutLane

I'm looking forward to seeing that team play. But sadly, I doubt any TV station (ESPN especially) will give NDSU fair coverage. Thanks for mention though.

North Dakota State started the same 5 white men in all 32 games this season, 4 of which are redshirt-seniors (which is more anecdotal evidence of the later physical maturity in most whites), and only played one black in the championship game. but there's even more impressive news regarding the Bison!

1st-team All-conference small forward Brett Winkelman was the Academic All-American of the Year as well as being named 1st-team Academic All-America for the second consecutive year, and third AAA overall. he was 2nd-team Academic All-American in 2007.

point guard Ben Woodside was named the Summit League Player of the Year after leading the conference in scoring with 22.2 points per game in league contests and ranked second in the league with 5.7 assists per game.

Woodside led the Bison to the league's regular season crown in his senior season, had five games where he scored 30 or more points, which included his 60-point game against Stephen F. Austin, and tied an NCAA record in that game when he made 30 free throws.

6-7 sophomore small forward Michael Tveidt, the only non-senior in the starting lineup is a tremendous athlete. NDSU's track coach talked him into participating in the high jump at one meet last season, and after practicing for only a week, he cleared 6-8.

possibly the most impressive feat the team accomplished this year is this: North Dakota State is the first team since 1970 to qualify for the NCAA Tourney in their first year of Division I eligibility. simply amazing!

NDSU is a terrific offensive team, but they aren't very big. starting center Lucas Moorman (6-10) is the only player over 6-7 who gets playing time. this will be their biggest hurdle to overcome in the NCAA Tourney.

***********************************

GLS, it is 6-9 sophomore forward Will Hudson who you meant instead of Benson, who is a black sophomore center. you mentioned Maynard's terrific leaping ability. Hudson also plays way above the rim. in fact, Oakland's first two baskets of the championship game were Hudson dunks.

as an aside, there was only one non-white player on the three 5-man Academic All-American Teams.

Ben Woodside is incredible; I'm in awe of his ability. He looks even better than Sherron Collins (who's a great player) out there. But who's higher on the NBA's radar as a prospect? Same old, same old, we all know the story.

I hope some team gives Ben Woodside a long look. He appeared to be able to get to the paint with ease. So quick. Also, he faced Kansas throwing double teams his way as well. I know he's only 5'-11" and plays small conference but I think he proved today that he can play with the big boys.

Woodside is lightning quick Freethinker; I agree. I heard the announcer compare his to Nash, that was a nice compliment. They both also come from lesser covered schools. I wish more announcers would do anti-caste white-black player comparisons though. I guess our society hasn't come that far yet.

Ben Woodside is an amazing player. I feel he can be as good as Chris Paul if given the fair shot at the NBA. The Steve Nash complement is great, but I feel he's as good as Chris Paul.

Steve Nashis a better basketball player than Chris Paul. at least, he was before age started to catch up with him.

i feel the most accurate comparison to an NBA player to Ben Woodside is Tony Parker, although the Chris Paul comparison is also pretty good because of how muscular the two players are.

would it be immodest of me if i pointed out that i have spoken about Woodside on several occasions?

also, as i pointed out in my College awards: merit based column, Woodside wasn't even on the list for the nation's best point guards.

it's obvious how extreme the anti-white bias is.

i do want to point out, though, how proud i am of North Dakota State and their talented white ball players. they gave Kansas everything they could handle today, and if it weren't for the phenomenal play of white Jayhawk big man Cole Aldrich it is likely the Bison would have pulled off the upset. but as i predicted, the undersized Bison simply had no answer for the huge and hugely giftedAldrich.

still, all the respect and admiration in the world for these white athletes who did things the right way both on and off the court.

From Draft Express:

Blogging Through the NCAA Tournament (Day Two)

by: Jonathan Givony - President
March 20, 2009

2:07 There is, as expected, a strong contingent of North Dakota State fans on hand to support the semi-local team. You know this is going to be a good game since we have our first Gus Johnson sighting.

The Kansas- North Dakota State game is off to a great start. Both teams are knocking down their shotsâ€"for Kansas Sherron Collins is fire the perimeter while Ben Woodside is running the show for NDSU, creating great looks for his teammates on the perimeter or himself inside the lane. He's turned the corner twice already for some soft kisses off the glass, showing a very quick first step and excellent touchâ€"prompting Gus Johnson to call him a "Steve Nash-type point guard for college basketball." Sherron Collins has 13 early points for Kansas, up 21-19, at the under-12 media timeout. He's unloaded a barrage of tough 3-pointers, contested pull-up jumpers, an alley-oop to Cole Aldrich and some strong takes into the paint. What a first half performance"¦

2:28 Ben Woodside is having absolutely no problems getting his shot off against Kansas' defense. He's knocked down a couple more 3-pointers, and is continuing to get into the lane and finish with his beautiful floaters. He's made 7 of 10 shots and has 16 points on the game so far. Sherron Collins has cooled off a bit as he tends to do, but still has 17 points on 8/12 shooting. North Dakota State is very much in this game thanks to their excellent 3-point shooting and the competitiveness they've shown on the glass thus far, especially Brett Winkleman with 6 rebounds. It's not quite clear why Kansas isn't doing a better job getting Cole Aldrich involved inside, as NDSU has nothing close to a matchup for him. Aldrich has 8 points on 4/5 shooting, mostly on dunks. At half-time the score is 43-34 Kansas.

2:42 Woodside is showing some real craftiness drawing contact in the paint and forcing the officials to make calls. Not only is he extremely quick, but he also changes speeds extremely well, being an outstanding ball-handler (going left or right) with great poise. Turnovers have been a bit of an issue today, but that's to be expected considering how heavy a load he's forced to shoulder for NDSU offensively. What really makes Woodside unique at the college level is that not only is he an excellent shooter/scorer who can create his own shot and get into the lane, but he's also very much a pure point guard with excellent court vision and a terrific ability to find teammates on the pick and roll. We've compared him in the past to Jose Juan Barea, and he's doing a good job backing us up with that. Being able to blow by Kansas' defenders as if they did not even exist all day has to be opening up some eyes about his future pro potential.

After falling behind by double-digits, North Dakota State has battled back by continuing to knock down shots and limit mistakes on both ends of the floor. This is not just the Ben Woodside showâ€"they're getting steady contributions from everyone on the floor, especially Brett Winkleman. At the under-12 timeout, its 56-52 Kansas.

3:01 We hate to beat a dead horse, but Ben Woodside's crossover and first step is getting him to wherever he wants on the floor, and is allowing him to make a living inside the paint and at the free throw line. He doesn't even really need to use a screen, he's just turning on the jets and blowing past whoever is on him in pure one on one situations. He has 32 points on 11/18 shooting. On the other end we're watching a performance that is no less impressive from Sherron Collins, as he continues to make shots and run the pick and roll effectively with Cole Aldrich, who has now fouled out NDSU's starting center. Collins has 7 assists in addition to the 25+ points he's scored. At the under-4 timeout Kansas is up 69-62. What a great way to start off the second day"¦
