ESPN and the entire sports media is too caught about in athleticism, by which they mean strength, and running and jumping ability.
We see time and time again, in every sport, that it takes much more than running and jumping ability to be the best.
Developed athleticism, or skill, is much more important.
That is why the best quarterbacks are not necessarily the biggest and strongest, the best receivers are not necessarily the fastest, the best basketball players are not necessarily the best jumpers or dunkers.
Sure, these are necessary components for an athlete, but not the only components, and not even the most important components for making a great athlete.
A major factor that is completely over looked by the media is hand-eye coordination. Developing this talent is probably the most important component for an athlete.

It's no coincidence that the best white basketball players are foreigners (with the exception of Kevin Love). They work on developing their skills, learning the fundamentals, and playing as a team. Whereas ESPN and the sports media promote dunking as the most important part of the game to American kids.
Since black kids develop younger physically, white American kids get pushed out in this mind set of bigger, stronger, faster = better.
Also basketball is a team sport and good team play trumps individual talent, (see Mavericks over the Heat superstars as World Champions), but the media just wants to promote individual stars and top 10 dunks of the day. It's not good for the game, and definitely not good for developing white American talent in basketball.

jacknyc, I agree with some of what you are saying, but you say black kids develop physically at a younger age than whites. I've seen this on CF more than once. Where did ya'll get this information? Has this been proven scientifically somewhere, what? Did I miss something, because I don't believe this!

Maybe we should start this with a new thread.

I don't know if it's been scientifically proven or not, but I have read it more than once, and anecdotal evidence and personal observations seem to support it - 13yr, 14yr old black kids seem to be more developed physically than their white counterparts.
I could be wrong, but.....

jacknyc, hey I wasn't trying to be a smart@$$. I just don't buy into that theory that blacks overall develop younger than whites. I don't believe whites are inferior to any other race in any way at any time of their life.

I base this on my observations as a boy and now as man and father, such as, when I was in the 8th grade I was 13 yrs. old like most white 8th graders. However, we had had 2 black students that played football and yes the one although shorter than me looked more developed than me at the time although I was stronger and just as fast. Come to find out, this young black man was 15 years old. A full 2 years older than me. Alot changes take place between 13/15 years of age.

You may say well that's just one case, but from that time on I have observed that many black kids are held back a year and or fail 2 sometimes 3 grades. I see this all the time. Just go look at the football rosters of many D-1 colleges. They are littered with black players who were 18/19 year old juniors in high school.

One of the top high school players in the country celebrated his 18th birthday by going to his junior day visits to colleges in February of last year. This kid will be 19 when he enters college. Many white kids are still 17 when they enter spring practice after graduating high school in December!

I know a kid that turned 19 in September of his Senior year. He will enter college as a 20 year old freshman!

But what's really sad; is the number of white kids now doing this. Parents holding their kids back a year, say if they were born in June, July, or August before they start Kindergarten!

I am the father of 2 boys and they started school when they were supposed to; and my youngest has a birthday in July. He will graduate high school at barely 17.

But if you think that blacks develop faster physically, you can do what I did, and start your children working out and getting fit at an early age. Getting them ready to compete with anyone black, yellow, white, no matter their color or age!

From my personal experience Id say that blacks probably do mature physically at a slightly younger age. My High School was about 20% black and all the males had facial hair before most of the white kids did. All the females were wearing bras before most of the white girls. Having periods first too. That might just be one isolated case in one town though.

Well, whether it's true or not, the fact remains that for a number of reasons, white Americans are not doing nearly as well as their European and South American cousins in basketball.
I think the media has a lot to do with it, because they hype the 'black' style of basketball. White American players are 'caste' as 3 pt shooters or passers. But the foreign players aren't subjected to this, and thus they are allowed to develop as more complete players.
One thing that I noticed about Jeremy Lin, is that he is really good at driving to the basket and finishing. Then I thought about it and realized that there are no white American players that do this, especially not any guards - only foreign players.
Nash can take it to the hoop, at least he used to. Ginobili. Barea. Dragic. Rubio. Fernandez. Why no Americans? It's probably due to the caste system growing up. Expecting and encouraging them to shoot 3-pointers and pass the ball. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. And this very critical part of their game - driving to the basket - never gets developed.
Another reason white Americans are not doing well in basketball compared to their cousins.

I guess since Indiana was playing Charlotte last night they decided to let T. Hansbrough play a little. He responded, 22 points 9 rebs. I guess now he'll go back to coming off the bench!

You did good whitey, now go back to where you're more comfortable!

jacknyc,

Look at Notre Dame's huge 9-game winning streak in the DARK Big East. And, they've done this almost exclusively with "emerging" players! Jack Cooley emerged this year as a Junior.. Pat Connaughton is a true frosh.. Jerian Grant is black, but he's helped them and he is a Sophomore.

They've have stomped on multiple "bigger, faster and stronger" Negro teams. In the college basketball section.. me, Jack Lambert, Jimmy Chitwood and Freethinker are making positive posts about White players, mostly White American players. Our discussion group has room to grow.. you could join us in the college basketball section! Basketball is a great sport, and more White athletes' are displaying swagger and posterizing the bros...

There are some promising White shooting guards in college basketball right now. We are making gains at this position.

Two Negros, Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins, are Notre Dames top two scorers, top scorers, 3 pt shooters, free throw shooters, and ball hawks. I have a hard time considering their success a caste victory.

If that's you, Texas Tech, you've become even dumber than before! You think Notre Dame can function without a solid big? NO ONE in the MSM denies that Jack Cooley has had a breakout season, and this has the effect of keeping defenses' honest.

Thanks for "informing" me that Jerian Grant is a negro.. I said that he's helped Notre Dame and that he is black! That doesn't mean I'm going to participate in overrating Eric Atkins!!

You are just very upset because Notre Dame is in the top-tier of the Big East standings, with a team that virtually no one considers "stacked." Makes me wonder.. what could they do to their black opponents' if they truly were stacked? I suppose there would be phone calls to the NAACP!!

There's been a Mike Dunleavy sighting; 28 points off the bench in the Buc's win over the Wizard's!

How has Dunleavy not become a better NBA player? He has all the tools to be a great player.

Kevin Love's slump continued (4-13 FG), but Minnesota defeated the "Championship-contending" Clips!

Tyler Hansbrough had 15 points and 9 rebounds in Indiana's win over Golden State.

Whats even more amazing is Tyler did that in only 16 minutes... I'd love to see what Psycho-T could do with 35 minutes a game.

What a Saturday Night. Many great performances but I will only mention two for now. Kevin Love had 42 points leading the Twolves to a big win in Portland.

Equally impressive was our main man Dirk Nowitzki throwing down 40 points in the Mavs win. These guys are amazing!

Dirk is back! He scored 27 points last night and 28 tonight in the huge win over the Knicks. Pretty impressive considering his age. Nowitzki takes such good care of his body and it show. He is very similar to Nash and who knows how long he can continue to shine. I hope it's for a very long time. With tonights performance, he has his average back to over 20 points a game again. This makes me very happy as it was hard to see him struggle early on in the season. Then with the shortened season, he has less time to accumulate his career points total. I would love to see him finish in the the top 3-5 scorers of all time in the history of the nba. He has a chance to do it.

On a side note, David Lee is up to 19.2 a game. We have 3 guys in the top 15 in scoring. It's a start but not nearly enough. I'm hoping that guys like Kevin Love will continue to inspire the youth and we will see a huge influx of american players in the future. Then we have to hope that they don't end up getting screwed over like Jimmer has. He needs to get out of Sacramento as soon as possibe.

In Philly's dominant win over Doc's Boston squad, Nikola Vucevic had 14 points and 12 rebounds!

Whenever I watch Philly play, he is usually giving them a spark, but then the affletes ruin it by putting on a brick-clinic! Barring injury, Nikola can continue to play well and "man the interior" for Philly.. something that Elton Brand can no longer do. Go Nikola!

With Goran Dragic starting at the moment, Houston has 3 White starters. 4 of their 8 rotation players tonight were White (Dragic, Scola, Parsons & Budinger off the bench). Unfortunately, they are fighting with the TWolves for one of the final playoff spots.

The Magic had a nice win over Miami's Primadonnas.
Ryan Anderson had a double-double. 16 points & 12 boards. J.J. Redd1ck started, played 43 minutes and had a +26 rating when on the court. He finished with 17 points.

Louis Amundson had a career high 21 points in limited minutes in a win.

Dirk continues to roll. 27 points.

andrew bogut was traded to the warriors (AA coach) for monta ellis

The bucks were one of the whitest teams in the league and tied for 8th in the East making a playoff run..

With Ellis and Jennings in the lineup, no ones going to be able to shoot with the amount of shots they take....

Andrew Bogut was out for the year anyway. So the Bucks are still one of the whitest teams in the league.
Hopefully Bogut and David Lee can become a powerful combination at Golden State.

looks like the all black clippers have turned on their coach vinny del negro because they are not living up to their "lob city" expectations

With the Los Angeles Clippers in free fall, tensions are high in the club's locker room, most notably in the relationship between coach Vinny Del Negro and his players, according to several sources close to the situation.
"Vinny has lost the team," one source said. "They don't want to play hard for him."
With the Clippers having lost 11 of their past 18 games to turn this once-promising season into a mess, Del Negro's job security would certainly seem to be in jeopardy. As it is, Del Negro is in the final guaranteed season of his contract. The Clippers hold a team option for next season.
Most of the players, according to sources, believe it's time for a change. They cite the uncertainty of Del Negro's rotation as a major problem. With the front office adding several players to the roster throughout this shortened season -- Reggie Evans, Kenyon Martin, Bobby Simmons and Nick Young -- plus Eric Bledsoe's return from injury in February, players' minutes have fluctuated from game to game.
For instance, in one four-game stretch this month, Bledsoe played 6 minutes one game, 16 the next, then 4 minutes, then 17. And while starting at shooting guard, Randy Foye has played 35 minutes on some nights and 14 or 16 on others. This week, he lost his starting job to Young and did not play a minute in Tuesday's loss to Indiana.

For more news, notes and analysis of the L.A. Clippers, check out the Clippers Report. Blog

Beyond that, players have complained that Del Negro's offensive and defensive schemes are too basic and predictable and they say he plays favorites when handing out criticism, according to the sources. They say while he refuses to harshly criticize stars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, he does not hold back in jumping on the team's lesser players.
"That's a big problem," one player said. "The best coaches jump on whoever deserves it, no matter who it is."
After beating Miami, Oklahoma City, Orlando and the Los Angeles Lakers en route to a 19-9 start, the Clippers, who have an 11-13 record since Chauncey Billups went down with an Achilles injury, have fallen to the fifth seed in the Western Conference and are just two games ahead of ninth-place Utah.

Jason Smith had a hard foul on Blake Griffin last night. Surprisingly, Jalen Rose defended Smith, whereas Stephen A Smiff called it deplorable and wants him to be suspended 10 games minimum...

For what it's worth, the Toronto Raptors started 4 Whites tonight in their 9 point win over a very black Denver squad.

PG - Jose Calderon
SF - Linas Kleiza
PF - Andrea Bargnani
C - Aaron Gray

They all scored double figures except Gray (played far less minutes). This is obviously only one game but could they change their losing ways with this lineup?

:yo: to Toronto!

I was going thru some box scores and game logs to see how some of our players are doing. There's some good news from what I could see.

The usual superstars like Love, Dirk, as well the Gasol brothers, David Lee, etc are obviously doing well.

But several others players have caught my attention. Goran Dragic has had a great month in Houston getting some quality minutes by starting for the injured Lowry and producing. I think WL was correct with his projections while Dragic was in Phoenix that this kid has star potential. Looks like he needs a team/system where he can be a starter instead of coming of the bench. Rookie Chandler Parsons is almost averaging in double figures now, and has clearly adjusted to the NBA game. He's a Lamar Odom type player, tall and versatile, so this is very good to see.

Gordon Hayward has been playing very well since returning back to the starting line-up in his last 6 games. I was hoping for Hayward to make a bigger jump this year, but he's only 22 and will hopefully get better from here.

Marcin Gortat is a beast and has been tearing it up pretty much all season. If only he didn't waste a few years in Orlando and maybe became a starter sooner, he'd be a borderline all-star by now.

I'm glad you brought up Dragic. He has been on a tear. He is still only 26 so he has some good years left. Assuming the Twolves don't make the playoffs, Houston is the team to root for. Currently they are starting three whites with Scola, Parsons and Dragic. They bring Chase Budinger off the bench. They are a very unselfish team with alot of talent. I really hope Goran evenually wins the full time starting job. He is more than capable and could end up being a future all star if given the chance.
