I have been a fan of Duke basketball since the late 80's. That's about the time I first became racially aware of stereotyping of the white athlete. The one thing I have always noticed is the insane amount of national hatred of Duke basketball. It's not because of their success, because other successful basketball programs like UConn, Kansas, UCLA, North Carolina, Kentucky, etc...don't garner any national hatred like Duke does. True their is some regional hatred for those programs but it is based more on rivalries than anything else.It has to be because Duke always seems to have white american stars on their team. Haven't you noticed over the years how it's always the lead white guy on Duke's team that gets booed, taunted, made fun of and even gets death threats in the mail. It was always Danny Ferry, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laeetner, Chris Collins, JJ Redick and now Greg Paulus that gets booed. How come Grant Hill, Johhny Dawkins, Demarcus Nelson and Duke's other black stars never get subjected to the same treatment?
The other thing I have noticed is it is mostly white fans doing the booing. I just will never understand the self-hatred of white people. I don't get it. So I have a warning for incoming white Duke recruits in 2007, Taylor King and Kyle Singler, prepare to be hated, prepare to be hated by your own kind. Just sickening!..ps I am sure the members of CF have noticed all the celebrating going on over Duke's recent four game losing streak.

Everyone loves UNC, but hates Duke. Wish I could say I don't understand, but it is obvious and you pointed it out, self hate among whites.
Maybe it's jealousy seeing a JJ Redick out there tearing it up and these fans remember back when they were Kings of the Court in their HS days and it pisses them off that it's not them now.
That's the only thing I can possibly think why these guys are hated so much, among whites nonetheless.

They can't compare themselves to black guys because it's imbedded that the blacks are better, but they think, "Man, that ******* JJ Redick, he's not that good, I should be playing out there, I could beat him!"

Purely an example of one making himself feel good by tearing others down. It's a sad thing

I heard someone say on ESPN once that it is because they are seen as "rich white kids" and that is why they are hated. That kinda plays out to be true with the Duke lacrosse scandal, only well to do kids seem to gravitate to that sport. I hate the way this country penalizes success. Everybody wants to be rich and/or well off but some of us hate those who have already arrived at that goal. Inheritance taxes, death taxes, gift taxes and the capital gains tax are all just ways of penalizing the successful.

Fixin'? LOL

I know you're from the South for sure, Reb. I had to get out of the habit of using 'fixin' because 90% of the people with whom I work and live nearby didn't understand what it meant.

Speaking of Mr. Foxworthy:

...if you think Nifong (the infamous DA) should be disbarred and charged with multiple felonies, you might be a Duke lacrosse supporter.

...if you think the rape case was racially motivated, you might be a Duke lacrosse supporter.

I could go on for hours with this, but it isn't necessary.

I actually have witnesses a lot of Duke supporters(such as myself) though too. Usually those who hate Duke are stupid wiggers who love wearing the Michael Jordan throwback UNC jerseys and love wearing their Tar Heel blue backwards hats.

I was so glad to see them come through and beat Ga. Tech yesterday. They have been slipping and losing their confidence but yesterday was a step back in the right direction.

Here in Utah, I've decided to import some of my Southern language. If they don't know what it means, they usually ask me and then the next time I say it, they know. I sayseveral of those wordsa lot at the office just to make people smile.

I'm probably one of the biggest Duke fans there is, and have been for about 40 years. I do agree that they are hated by alot of people, but I really don't think it has anything to do with them having white stars. Duke has had lots of star players who are black and people disliked them just as much. I do think that you are right about the rich kid label. Most of the kids that go to school there do come from money, but what difference does that make? Duke runs a clean well respected[by the people that count]program with kids that can carry on an intellegent conversation[yes even the black kids] and win inspite of their tough standards. Most schools would trade their program for dukes program any day. As far as people disliking players like jj reddick, or christian laettner, I can see why they would. They were great players with a swagger and they won. I loved them because they whipped unc's ass.

I have been a Duke fan since the mid 80's and I don't ever remember Grant Hill, Jay Williams, Corey Magette or any of the other black stars on Duke get near the ridicule or the booing that the white stars get. JJ Reddick actually got death threats in the mail. Duke is the only college basketball program that has any kind of national hatred, why do you think that is? I think the answer is obvious.Edited by: guest301

I think JJ got all those threats because he was so damn good,he was a little cocky, and he broke the tarheels hearts so many times. Most of the hatred of Duke comes from disgruntled UNC fans. I think most of the media appreciates what Duke has and still is doing. What I should have said is, when Duke had black super stars fans didn't start liking Duke more, they still hated them. The hatred of Duke is more than a racial thing. The hatred of Duke is that they do it right and are successful doing it. You may be right that there are some race issues, but I'm not totally convinced.

Replying to the two previous points it all boils down to that white people self loath white bball players. I mean how easy is it to jump the only white guy on the court and point out his mistake when all the other players are black. White people don't think twice to critize white players but they do when it comes to a black player because they don't want to seen as racist.

From a NY times article last year......

Some fans and sports experts also said they believe that race may play a factor in the treatment of Redick and Morrison, who are both white and often perform before predominantly white audiences.

Students might be reluctant to make such overtly callous remarks and hold up inappropriate signs referring to black players, for fear of being accused of racial insensitivity, or they might be incredulous that white players can be so good in a sport that has come to be dominated by black players, some fans said.

"In some ways, the crowd may feel, 'He doesn't deserve it because he's not so different from me,' " said Peter Roby, a former head basketball coach at Harvard who is director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University.
