This Friday in Manchester England Irishman Matthew Macklin 24-2(17) will face Finland's Amin Asikainen 26-2(17) for the vacant European Middleweight title. Asikainen a former Euro champ split two fights with newly crowned IBF Middleweight champion Sebastian Sylvester, both fights ending in knockouts. Macklin's the early favorite but I wouldn't count out the Finn.

Macklin has now established himself as a top middleweight with a first round KO over a very good fighter.

The middleweight division has a lot of talented up-and-comers: Macklin, Korobov, Jacobs, Zbik, Golovkin, and Pirog.

Macklin beat Pintos on points. The lone score was 99-88.

Too bad the two talented white middleweights, Pirog and Macklin, have to fight each other. I'd prefer to see one of them fight Jacobs, or maybe another undefeated black middleweight like Quillan or Green.

A bout with former World Champion Sergio Mora is being discussed for a July 31 HBO PPV undercard. Winky Wright apparently turned down an offer to face the Irishman.

From Fightnews

European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin (28-2, 19 KOs) took a hard fought unanimous decision over former world title challenger Ruben Varon (35-6, 16 KOs). It was a tough fight for the WBC #5/WBA #6/WBO #6 rated Macklin, who faded badly late. Scores were 116-111, 116-113, 117-111. Varon was deducted a point for a low blow in round five.

Poor showing from Macklin. The light hitting Sebastian Zbik stopped Varon in 4.

Macklin has signed with Lou Dibella. He looks likely to get the next fight with Sergio Martinez after his great fight with Catic/"Sturm" in Germany. Most thought Macklin won that one.

Buddy McGirt training Macklin. That guy is a bad luck charm and I never see his fighters winning.

Same in the 10. Knocked Mack's mouth piece out, flying out of the ring.

Yeah, I got carried away. Sergio is becoming the greatest at the lower weights. The K Bros hold the mantel of greatest fighters of our era.

What carries the day for Sergio is his uber athletism, confidence, relaxation and lightening quick hands. Once he got knocked down in the 7th, said, "oh well guess its time to get to work and step on the gas". Which he did. The 8th and 9th he turned it up and took the wind out of a very capable Macklin who was near the brink of a massive upset after the 7th round.

I hope Sergio gets Mayweather, if Gaylord beats Cotto.

I was watching the HBO stream of the fight, and they started to downgrade Sergio even before the fight, saying he didn't belong in the top 3 P4P (of course, he's white). I guess Paul Williams did...

Let's stress the fact here that hadn't Williams been ranked so high, never would Martinez have been that very P4P # 3. After Sergio knocked out Williams, they had no choice but to put him in that spot.

A lot of people (and HBO evidently) were really dying for an opportunity to put Martinez out of that list. Just the fact Wladimir Klitschko isn't even in the top 5 is laughable and demonstrates the bias of "official rankings".

Nothing against Macklin but i was hoping for an impressive finish from Martinez so these boxing crooks have to deal with this slick, athletic white boxer again.

The only one giving Maravilla credit last night was Emmanuel Steward, and the more agressive towards him was old senile Larry.

Great fight, and congrats to both of the fighters.
