The Buffalo Bills have decided to start journeyman Matt Bowen over first round draft pick, Donte Whitner (4.45 in the 40-yard dash) from The OSU at the strong safety position. Bowen was an all-state, all-area and all-conference selection as a quarterback in High School. He was originally recruited to Iowa as a quarterback after finishing his senior season as team captain and MVP after passing for 1,533 yards and 17 touchdowns, and gaining 1,329 yards and 17 scores on the ground. He also played three seasons of baseball and four seasons of basketball.

Whitner was a holdout for the majority of training camp.Dispite his absence, Whitner was given the opportunity to start in his second game of eligibility. Buffalo Bills Color Announcer Steve Tasker described the Bills secondary as "...more athletic with the addition of Whitner".

Bowen also graduated from Iowa with a degree in journalism.
