What is the significance of June 15 re the Bambino?
And as for wearing #3, that's an option, or maybe have all players wear *no* number, because most of Ruth's career took place before the era of uniform numbers in baseball (IIRC the Yanks started wearing #s in 1929 and within a couple of years the rest of MLB followed suit).
To clarify, have all players wear #3 or have all players wear no numbers at all. Perhaps the MLBPA rank and file could vote on it (everyone wears 3 or nobody wears a number).
Apart from "that special day every year", would #3 be retired throughout MLB except in grandfather cases (like PHI's Hunter Pence)? MLB honored Robinson by retiring #42 universally except in grandfather cases (Marino Rivera is the last of the Mohicans [pun] in that regard).
