Czech Lukas Konecny is the current European Jr Middleweight Champion. All three of his losses are disputed. Lost a split decision in Spain against Spaniard Ruben Varon 35-5(16) then lost a majority decision in Italy to former IBF Welterweight Champ Michele Piccirillo 50-5(29), then he pushed the technically brilliant Sergiy Dzinziruk 37-0(23) to a majority decision in Germany.

As an amateur, Lukas had a 230-25-2 record and won Bronze twice at the World Amateur Championships. As a pro he holds two stoppage wins over Khoren Gevor.

Lukas defends his EBU title tomorrow against Armenian Hamlet Petrosyan 29-6(10).

Konecny wins WBO interim 154lb belt

In a clash for the vacant interim WBO jr middleweight title, former European champion and hometown favorite Lukas Konecny (48-3, 23 KOs) took advantage of his long awaited world title fight by scorng a seventh round KO over Salim Larbi (17-2-1, 4 KOs) on Thursday night at the Vodova Arena in Brno, Czech Republic. Konecny pressured Larbi from the opening bell. In round three, both fighters stood toe-to-toe with Konecny getting the better of it, although he came out of it with cuts over the left eye and the bridge of the nose. That was pretty much Larbi’s last hurrah as the cuts spurred Konecny to up his aggression even more in rounds four and five. A right hand to the body in the seventh finally put Larbi on the deck and as referee Andre Van Grootenbruel reached the count of ten.

Long time mandatory challenger Konecny was originally slated to face WBO jr middleweight champion Zaurbek Baysangurov last month in Kiev, Ukraine, but Baysangurov suffered a back injury in training shortly before the fight. Last year Konecny had a title shot against then-WBO champion Serhiy Dzinziruk canceled an injury in training shortly before the fight.

Baysangurov-Konecny Kiev presser

By Alex “Oscar” Potapov

WBO junior middleweight champion Zaur Baysangurov (27-1, 20 KOs) and interim WBO champion Lukas Konecny (48-3, 23 KOs) held a press conference for Saturday’s showdown at the Sports Palace in Kiev, Ukraine.

Zaur Baysangurov:
I’m sure it will be amazing and interesting fight. I had a good training camp in California with my new coach Abel Sanchez. I’m ready for war and will show on Saturday the best I can do.

Lukas Konecny:
I am very happy to be the second time in Ukraine. Kiev is a great place. For the first time our fight did not take due to the injury of Zaur, but now I’m sure nothing will prevent us to find out who is the best. Baysangurov is a good fighter, but I’m confident of victory. It will be a spectacular fight. See you on Saturday.

Ulf Steinforth, SES Boxing:
The Fight between Zaur and Lukas will qualify for the fight of the year. Saturday will be a battle of the two best European fighters for the junior middleweight title. We are looking forward to this fight and confident of Lukas’ victory.

Alexander Krassyuk, K2:
I’m sure on Saturday will be our most exciting and intriguing fight in the history of professional boxing in Ukraine. You have to see this!

Wladimir Klitschko, the undisputed world heavyweight champion:
I do not doubt Saturday Baysangurov and Konecny will deliver an entertaining fight for the millions of fans of boxing. Let the strongest boxer win!

Ive been a big supporter of Konecny since I first saw him fight back in 2010 on Frank Warren's "Magnificent 7" fightcard, he knocked out Matthew Hall that night. If I remember correctly, Hall was a favourite heading into the fight lol!

Konecny is 34 years old, has a lot of fights, experience, and savvy, thats his greatest strength. Very intelligent, savvy, conditioned, powerful and decent speed type boxer. He will be a tough opponent for absolutely anyone at 154 pounds.

I'd say that Konecny is definitely a top5 boxer at 154 pounds. I expect Baysangurov to have his hands full, and in fact, Id slightly favour Konecny to win the fight. Baysangurov is very good as well, and he's a lot younger, but he's shown chin and mentality issues in the past. Konecny is exactly the type of guy who will exploit those weaknesses. Mind you, Baysangurov has shown a lot of improvement, and maybe he is a better fighter than his last loss.

Winner of Baysangurov/Konecny in my opinion, is an unquestionable top3 guy at 154 pounds. Great to see these 2 *European* guys fighting each other in probably the best fight at 154 this year. I'd love to see the winner of this fight Cotto, Bundrage (would be a rematch for Baysangurov), Trout, or Kirkland.

For what its worth, Id favour both Baysangurov and Konecny over Trout, Cintron, and Id also favour Konecny over Bundrage.

I believe the best stream for today's fight is here

http://www.thefirstrow.eu/watch/145295/1/watch-ses-boxing:-zaurbek-baysangurov-vs-lukas-konecny.html

or

I cant wait for this fight and Im very excited. I love European Boxing scene and the truth is I get more excited for a good Euro or German fight than I do for any fight in the States, in my opinion, its just much better quality boxing and entertainment.

Cant wait for this one, Baysangurov and Konecny. Yesterday I posted that I thought Konecny would win, but as of today Ill just say its a 50-50 fight. I really don't know who will win and that makes for a great fight to watch!

Really looking forward to this one and Ill post my thoughts when the fight is over.

Great effort today by Konecny, he has the heart of a lion, but Baysangurov was just a level higher in boxing skills.
