This guy definitely deserves his own topic, another great super middie out of Europe.

Bute has a bunch of fights up on youtube - trust me, you won't be dissapointed when you check them out. Here are some of them:

He might be even better than Kessler, his skill and speed are off the charts.

Boxrec says he's a Romanian fighting out of Quebec. Dunno, Bute does sound like a french name.

Lucian Bute won a lop-sided decision against Sergey Tatevosyan on Friday. I didn't even know he was fighting! Oops.

If the IBF moves everyone up one notch and does not place
berrion at the number 1 contender we could have a situation in which Bute would face a white mandantory, Vitali Tsypko, Carl Froch or Dennis Inkin

Looks like Bute is taking on decent but shop-worn and aging William Joppy on Feb 29.

http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=13963&more=1

Montreal, Thursday January 10th 2008 - IBF World Super Middleweight champion Lucian Bute (21-0-0 17 K.-O.) is set to defend his World crown for the first time against a very interesting and decorated challenger in 3-time World champion William Joppy (39-4-1 30 K.-O.) on Friday, February 29th 2008 at the Montreal Bell Centre. The bout will be promoted by InterBox in association with William Joppy's promoter Goossen Tutor Promotions.

World WBA Middleweight champion for eight years (1996-2003), William Joppy brings an arsenal of experience to Montreal, having fought some of the best boxers in the world including Felix Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins and Jermain Taylor. Joppy went the distance with both Hopkins and Taylor.

As was the case in his previous bout against Alejandro Berrio, Lucian will have to be careful and alert during each minute of every round as Joppy will continually attempt to place Lucian in uncomfortable zones. Joppy punches hard with both hands as demonstrated by his 30 KO`s in 39 victories and is coming in having won 5 fights in a row, all by KO. William Joppy is rated #15 by the IBF in the Light Heavy division and #7 by the WBC in the Super Middleweight division.

For the first time in his career, Lucian Bute will feel the pressure of having to succeed as a champion. Becoming a world champion is one thing, but retaining the title is an even more difficult task. Nevertheless, this is a challenge that Lucian can definitely overcome.

"I am both happy and very proud to start my reign as Champion in front of my fans at the Bell Centre. Each one of my opponents has been selected to assure my progression and to better my apprenticeship. Although I am a World champion, I will feel more like a student in front of an opponent of such calibre as William Joppy".

As for William Joppy, he plans to leave Montreal with Lucian Bute's belt. "I am not coming here to Montreal as a tourist and anybody who thinks I'm a has-been or that I am easy prey better re-evaluate their thinking. I won my last 5 fights by knockout and my experience will serve me well against the young champion Bute. Quebec boxing fans will see a great fight but also a nasty surprise!"

7000 tickets sold
Tickets are in strong demand for Bute's first defense of his IBF World Super Middleweight title bout. Over 7,000 tickets have been sold, and InterBox will open three new sections to respond to the demand. Tickets are available through the Admissions network by dialing 514-790-1245, or 1-800-361-4585, by visiting www.admission.com. Tickets are also available at Club de boxe Champion by calling 514-376-0980.

Training in Mexico
Lucian Bute will depart for Mexico this Saturday with his trainer Stephan Larouche for a mini training camp.

Joppy is a good choice as a first title defense.

1. He's a familiar "name" opponent
2. He's black, and Bute would be given no credit for defeating a more difficult European opponent.
3. He's only ever lost to world champions.
4. He's coming off five straight wins.
5. He's still only 37, about the same age as Calzaghe who's 36.
6. He was the WBA world champion at middleweight.

Of course the "experts" will say he's shot to discredit Bute, but I'm going to enjoy this one anyway.

An interesting comparison of Lucien Bute is with Jean Pascal. Both men fight out of Montreal but which one is Québecois? If you were to ask someone like LUMSDENPOWER he would probably say, like some confused and nationless members of the Québec media, that Jean Pascal is the Québecois and Lucien Bute is Romanian.

While both have names that ring true to my french ear, the truth is they are both foreigners but one gets a special pass with the media in Québec -from what I have read. Bute, a white man, was born in Galati, Romania, and is called a Romanian who has adopted Le Québec as his home. Pascal, a black man, was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, and is called a Québecois by nationality. Even Boxrec.com lists Pascal as Canadian by nationality but lists Bute as Romanian. Because Pascal speaks only french and Bute's first language is Romanian, the P.C. media has sucked up to Pascal.

From what I have seen and read on french web-sites, Québecers have adopted Bute as their own like hand to glove while they are merely polite about Pascal. But, walking down the streets of downtown Montreal, any real Québecer would take Bute as their own while instantly knowing Pascal is a foreigner. The day will come in the near future when the two will fight at the Molson Centre in Montréal. And when they do watch who the crowd is going to go WILD for. I don't think it will be the man from Port-Au-Prince.Edited by: Maple Leaf

Bute's first title defense will be coming up in a few days, on Feb 29 in Montreal against Joppy.

I'd like to see Lucian fight some of the well-known black super-middleweights like Jeff Lacy, Jermain Taylor and Edison Miranda.

Lucian Bute wins by 10th round TKO. Bute won every round, and Joppy was down once in the 9th and twice in the 10th.

Congrats to Bute. It was good win over now trail horse Joppy. I am interested to see who he fights next. The winner of Calzaghe/Hopkins or will he fight Kesseler.

I would perfer he fight Kesseler. If Joe dominates Bopkins, I suspect Joe will fight Roy Jones in Wales. Lets see if Roy steps up. I doubt that he will.

Once again congrats to Bute.

This was a big night for Bute, his promoter, and his fans with this kind of victory.

The fans that came to see him at the Bell Centre got their money's worth. Instead of a first round knockout easily missed while buying popcorn, the fans watched Bute dance and slip past Joppy in the early rounds, frustrating him; they watched him spear and torment him in the middle rounds until he was confused and drained; and in the 10th round, with Joppy swaying and desperate, the fans roared as Bute killed him with power shots. One gay man screamed and covered his eyes and ran out of the building crying.

Had he only won by a decision he would have given the media reason to question his abilities. Bute had to win by a knockout: or else! Klitschko recently knocked out 4 opponents in a row but in his last fight he boxed a cautious fight and now the media lions have jumped on his back and are digging in their claws.

Bute's promoter is a real winner as well. Fourteen thousand people came to watch the show and it was televised as well. Bute is a great find for a promoter as he has appeal all over the world and will eventually land a superfight with Kessler or perhaps Pavlik. But for the moment, and I agree with JD1986, I would like to see him play matador with Lacy or Miranda, or possibly engage in a war with Taylor.

Miranda is now calling for Bute...Here's the link and the story...

http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=14999&more=1

After Mikkel Kessler suddenly pulled out of the highly anticipated fight with Edison Miranda, it left Miranda wondering who would be his next opponent. Miranda has made it very clear that he will fight anyone anywhere as long as the offer is somewhat reasonable, and he has backed this up. However, as of now, no one has stepped up to bat. So, he is calling out Lucian Bute to step up and take the challenge. "I find it frustrating that I'm simply trying to fight the best in the world and no one will offer me a shot. I know many writers and fans think I talk a lot of trash, but at the end of the day I bring excitement into the ring. I am willing to fight the best out there and Bute is the champion of the world so I am asking him to be a man and fight me".

Bute reportedly does not have a fight scheduled and is also looking for a voluntary defense of his title sometime near May. Miranda stated "I am willing to go into his backyard and fight him. If he does not take this fight, than he is a coward just like Mikkel Kessler".

...This could be interesting...

Edison Miranda has done nothing to deserve a title fight. He's never defeated anyone any good, and the two times he's fought world class opponents (Pavlik and Abraham), he's lost. Mikkel Kessler decided to not fight him because the money wasn't enough - fighting Miranda would not be a big enough payday for him, nor a good enough name on his resume at this point in his career.

Miranda has never had a world title, he's really just a loud-mouthed journeyman/fringe contender! He's not even in the Ring top 10 super middleweights. Lucian Bute would be better off fighting his mandatory, Librado Andrade, or taking on a world-class opponent like Jermain Taylor or Winky Wright.
