Los Detroilet Tigres signed Prince Fielder to a 9 year 214 million contract. That's 24 million a year. Fielder is a power guy and young but his weight issue will certainly slow him down early like it did to his father-who also played in Detroit. The Tigers owner Mike Illitch is also the guy who built the Red Wings into a NHL power house. He's the owner of Little Ceasars Pizza so he makes his money feeding garbage into both ends of the DWF's.

Illitch seems like a good guy, he's invested a lot into the city of Detroit, like many a clueless white rich guy, and his desire to win a World Series is the big goal left in his life. He's 82 and will do anything to win it all before he goes. I think the reason the Tigers have so many hispanic/black players is the GM Dave Dombrowsky, who knows nothing else but signing high priced black/hispanic players. As long as Dombrowsky is in charge the Tigers will resemble the national Venezualian team.

Let's see, Fielder will be 28 this year, is about 75 pounds overweight, and black athletes tend to fade a lot earlier than White ones, especially those of the morbidly obese variety. Speaking of eating, my guess is that Illitch will be eating about $150 million of the $214 million he guaranteed one-dimensional Fat Boy.

Exactly! To his credit one Detroit sportwriter brought up that issue and reasoned that Illitch didn't care, he was desparate for a title and would spend whatever it takes. I think the unspoken issue is that Illitch is not going to be around forever and this might be his last shot so he figures you can't take it with you.....

Prince will probably be real good about spending the money like his daddy Cecil, who went through the millions very quickly until recently he was sleeping on Princes couch.

Jaxvid, if my memory serves me correctly, Dombrowski was the GM of the former Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins) back in the day (1990's?). In Miami, he was probably given strict orders from the owner to make the team as Latin as possible, considering the cities demographics and attendence issues. I guess that's what he knows best (chasing Latin players, with a few blacks sprinkled in), so he's doing it in Detroit.

Also, if I were to venture a guess, Jim Leyland has no porblem with it. As he also seems like a first class caste clown.

How does a 5'11'' guy weigh 275 pounds and claim to be a vegetarian? This shows the stupidity of the open market all the reasonable teams knew that halfway through a long contract his numbers will probably decline to mediocre see Big Pappy, Mo Vaughn etc. I wonder if the contract comes with a free Dominoes veggie pizza a day for life...:thumbdown:

Some other bad news in this deal is that Brandon Inge will lose his starting job at 3rd base. The Tigers are reporting they will move the chubby Miguel Cabrera there. This makes no sense as they will have 2 fat defensive liabilities on the corners. Also, DH Victor Martinez is out for the year so it would make sense to play Cabrera there. Who will DH now? Another Latino?

9 years and $214,000,000 for a guy who does nothing other than hit the baseball. Once Fat Boy loses a bit of bat speed, his uppercut swing won't be able to catch up to one good FB after the other. He'll probably be a good hitter for a few more years, but on the other side of 30 will go downhill quickly.

(And I think I saw something yesterday about lefty power hitters having big trouble in Detroit.)

Cabrerra can't play 3rd and anyone that is saying he will is crazy. They might try it for a few games but he's not a particularly good first baseman either so that won't work out. Detroit needs ground ball defense as a couple of their starters are ground ball pitchers. Anyway Fielder is the perfect DH and will play there all year round and spell Cabrerra once in a while. Fielder's fat ass belongs in the AL as a DH so from that perspective it's a good move.

I think the speculation was based on Martinez returning at some point and since he also can't play anywhere in the field the issue is what to do with him when he returns.

Remember the days when hispanic players were good field - no hit, now thanks to steroids they're good hit -no field.

I can't believe Leyland is serious about playing Cabrera at 3B every day. He hasn't played there regularly since '07. I think after a failed effort to play him there in April, the Tigers will use him most of the time at 1B, with Fielder getting a start here and there when he's not the DH.
