One of the greatest pure athletes to play baseball was fired as manager of Arizona. Gibson for those who don't know was a fantastic wideout from Michigan State but chose baseball instead. He could run the 40 yard dash in 4.2 seconds and was considered a Mickey Mantle type athlete. He went on to have a very good MLB career mostly with the Tigers but won an MVP with the Dodgers the year they upset the A's. He is most famous for the big home run against Eckersley that turned around the series. You know the one where he limped around the bases. Interesting that the media focuses on that and rarely if ever mentions his awe inspiring athletic ability. A better and smoother pure athlete than Bo Jackson you would never know that the way the media still yaks about Jackson and his athletic gifts. Bo was a stiff mediocre baseball player.

Couldn't agree more. I really liked this guy back in the day. He's a true Detroit hero. He was a legitimate white speedster who was also a big guy. Oddly enough the media acknowledged his speed ability at time when virtually no other white men were granted that respect. I think it had to do with his fiery competitiveness that would not allow him to be pigeon holed as "sneaky" fast. He probably would have punched a writer that said that.

He didn't steal many bases, probably thought only pussies steal bases.

What pisses me off about this firing is why did they do it 3 days before the season ended. Isn't that something that could wait 3 more days? Are the fans going to be streaming into the stadium to see the new manager, another guy who was fired (Alan Trammell as interim manager)? I think it's embarrassing and classless. Especially as he did such a good job before this year.
