Joey Abell (now 18-1, 17 KO) won the first decision of his career tonight over Teke Oruh (now 14-1). It was a tough, back-and-forth fight.

JD, I watched the fight tonight, thanks to your info. Appreciate the posting.

I thought Abell looked a little tentative in the early rounds. I was wondering if he had thrown with bad intentions earlier in the fight if he might not have put Oruh out. On the other hand, Oruh had Abell in trouble a couple of times in the later rounds.

Neither of these guys appear to be any threat to the top tier of heavyweights, but it was a good win for Abell and a fight to build on.

Anybody going to watch white American heavyweight Joey Abell this Friday on Shobox (Showtime)? His opponent will be undefeated African Teke Oruh (14-0).

Abell is a power-punching KO artist with an aggressive, crowd-pleasing style. He reminds me of a younger, slightly faster version of Vladimir Virchis.

That's bad news for Virchis.

The fight didn't show up on Showtime until midnight here. Neither fighter was impressive, to put it mildly. The only reason Abell won was that the African was acting like a sparring partner, doing almost nothing, but still managing to land a few hard shots.

Oruh is basically a can and should have been easily defeated.Abell dropped three or four rounds against an extremely limited opponent, and was really hurt from at least one of those right hands. Abell has decent movement, and did enough to win, but did not display the power that we would've expected from him. Oh well, that's the way it is with prospects. You never know. He's only 26, plenty of time to get better.

Meanwhile, I have to admit that Ward was very impressive. He did what he was supposed to do: dominate a weak opponent. The only knock on him that I can think of is that he didn't seem that big, although he's listed at 6-0. How far do you guys think he'll go?

Teke Oruh is not a tomato can, he was 14-0 and rated #100 by BoxRec, and was considered a good prospect. He's somewhat like Friday Ahunyana - strong with some talent, but kind of lazy or passive sometimes.

Oruh was actually a big step up for Abell. When Joey HAS faced tomato cans, he's knocked them out in an early round. Abell seemed rather hesitant last night, possibly he was a bit shy about headlining a nationally televised boxing event. We should take into consideration that he took the fight as a late replacement for Arreola, and so didn't really have the chance to train for the Nigerian opponent.

All things considered, Abell did very well last night, handing Oruh his first loss.

As for Ward, I don't care how far he goes. I post here because I'm more interested in how far WHITE boxers will go. Over at boxingscene's 'non-stop boxing' forum most of the posters are white guys who like black dudes, so there are frequent ongoing discussions about Ward and the other black prospects.

This is a much better win for Abell than he's being credited for. Oruh was considered a very good prospect a while back, albeit a lazy one, which is why his last too fights were close. I remember reading him being called the next Ibeabuchi, and anyone familiar with boxing in the media realize that they loved Ike. Abell beat him technically instead of overpowering him. I'm actually quite glad the fight went the distance because we got to see more of Abell. I think he has it in him to do relatively well.

Wow, it's amazing that anyone considered this guy to have "talent." I guess it goes to show how enamored people are with athletes who have dark skin. Oruh was slow, plodding, one-dimensional, has been down three times in his career, only has six KO's on his record, and only threw one punch (straight right) the entire fight.(Although that right hand did have some impact, given that Abell displayed mediocre defense after about the third round.) It is true that Abell only had two weeks notice. All we can do is wait and see how well he does from here. It's just disappointing. I waited quite a while to see this guy.

As for previous Abell opponents, they must be way beyond cans to be knocked out by this guy in the first or second round. He didn't even seem to have that much power! Fascinating.

And as for Ward, JD, I don't care about him either. I only ask because he's a Super-Middleweight, and in case you didn't notice, all the top super-middleweights are white. I was just wondering if you guys thought that he would be dangerous competition for our top guys in the next few years, when he finally decides to step up in competition. I guess I should have explained that, seeing that someone is now implying that I give a sh*t about a black fighter. I don't. Edited by: JD074

Abell's money punch appears to be the straight left, but for some reason he held it back. I'm not a big fan of lefties anyway, especially heavyweight lefties. Just something about the way they line up with conventional fighters that makes for an awkward looking fight. I did like his chin and stamina, and I think he's got a good punch. Right now he's not ready for prime time, but if he stays active and works at his craft, who knows?

I just read in the BoxRec current scene forum that Abell BROKE HIS LEFT HAND in the second round of the fight with Oruh.

That explains why he seemed to be holding back from knocking his opponent out. Being able to win with a broken hand shows he has adaptability and heart!

Holding back his broken hand was smart. Win on boxing and don't damage the hand further. With a good hand he probably takes the other guy out.

Joey Abell's hand has healed, and he'll be fighting on Thursday in Sweden against the experienced Ratko Draskovic (28-6), who's last fight was with Sinan Samil Sam.

Hopefully Abell will return to fighting frequently so he will stay sharp and improve (he fought NINE times last year, up until his hand was injured in the November fight with Teke Oruh). Edited by: JD1986

Joey Abell floored his opponent in the first round, and then knocked him out, 57 seconds into the second round.

Beautiful KO by Abell in the second round, he knocked Wheeler right out of the ring with his powerful left!

Wheeler is known for dirty tactics, but they didn't work tonight, it seemed he just got Joey angry. You can watch the video at the website, you just need to sign up for a free membership.

Andrew Greeley is fairly durable and went the distance with Kevin Johnson, Chris Arreola and Travis Walker in the past year or two. We'll see if Joey can stop him tonight.
