This is what happens to white guys with talent, they get turned into blockers.

News
Giants' tight end Jeremy Shockey is reportedly in the best shape of his short career. The New York Post reported Friday that Shockey was in "prime shape" and added that he "looks cut and fat-free." Meanwhile, the Post also reported that the fourth-year tight end will get more opportunities to catch passes this year than he did last season, when head coach Tom Coughlin used him as a blocker on a regular basisEdited by: Bart

That is great news. Now if Eli is smart,he will make him
his favorite target to throw the ball to.He can easily
attain 1000 yards if they just throw to him more.I love
his attitude.I know it rubs some people the wrong way
but he will not back down from anyone.Similar to Bill
Romanowski but at tightend.Shockey is a bad man!Get
out of his way or he will run you over.Ha.ha.

Too bad Eli Manning will never be a good QB so Shockey's stats will suffer a little bit. Though I can see Jeremy getting 85 rec 1050 yds. 6 TDs. another Pro Bowl season.

What do you mean Eli won't be a good QB? He will, I guarantee it. You wait and see what this year brings for him and remember what I said. I bet he uses Shockey a lot. He had a great tight end to throw to at Ole Miss by the name of Doug Zeigler. He was very good. Doug graduated after the 2002 season, in which he was injured.

What I should have said was Eli won't be as good as Peyton and that is a fact.

Maybe, maybe not, how can anyone tell at this point? I sure don't think people would have made predictions of him breaking the TD record back in June of 1999.

Eli may have to go to another city to thrive but who knows at this point. I'm rooting for him to succeed with the Giants. He certainly has the football genes to be a superstar.

As far as Shockey, Coughlin is a very conservative coach when it comes to offense. And when he was with Jacksonville, the Jags never had a white receiver even as a backup. Tight ends were mainly of the blocking type, ala Kyle Brady.

I think Shockey should be used exclusively as a wide receiver. He's as fast as a number of black WRs, knows how to run with the ball, and is strong as a bull. But of course being that big and that white, as the computer on "Lost in Space" used to say "That does not compute." That's going way too far outside the box to use a white man in that fashion.

Thank God Matt Jones runs a 4.39 40 otherwise he'd be eating eight meals of pasta a day right now and working solely on blocking techniques at the TE position.

I know that's right Don! I have thought about Shockey in that way before too. I hope he gets more passes thrown his way this year. It may not happen, but I am optimistic about it.

Well, Jeremy is off to a good start this year. He got over 100 yards on 6 receptions to lead the Giants. I am for sure that Manning will throw to him a lot. Unfortunately, I think Eli will try to throw to Plax-i-cant-catch Burress more as well. If he keeps dropping stuff like tonight he may not, but I suspect the coaches in NY want him to be in the offense more, which could hurt Shockey's throws. I hope I'm wrong.

Shockey had a great game tonight. You can just see that he has that certain swagger about him and it pisses alot of black players off. They don't like anyone beating them at their game.I think it's really funny.I agree with Don,Shockey would be great as a wide out.Why not,he is already their best receiver as it is.Shockey looks like he should be in Ultimate Fighting or Wrestling. He just has that look that people know not to mess with.Very few guys even try to.I like his attitude and we need a running back like that.I think Bell is going to be a great one.

when did they use him primarily as a blocker?

he's the baddest tight end in the league. really, the baddest receiver in the league. he literally runs people over, white or black. i suspect black players are actually afraid of this guy.

the guys you have to be worried about are dallas clark and heath miller. they're too good to be wasted blocking.

Offensive coordinator John Hufnagel: On Jeremy Shockey's comments that he was used more as a blocker last year than he would have preferred:
"As far as Shockey blocking, we have to pick up the blitz some how, some way. One of the options that you do have is to use your tight end. We also moved Shock around a little bit. By doing that he was also involved more as a blocker in the run game from a running back position than he was in the tight end position. If you run the football, your tight end is going to block anyway, so he is just doing it from a different position. We need to get Shock more into the game. We need to get him to be a playmaker for us consistently, game-in and game-out. I know he is looking forward to that challenge, he wants it so bad. We've just got to make sure that we are doing everything we can offensively to help him get us in the end zone."

Tight ends coach Michael PopeOn Shockey's desire to have a larger role in the passing game:
"That has more to do with the defense than it does with us. He has some degree of a reputation, so they just aren't going to let him run down the field and catch the ball. They are going to make it as difficult for him as they can.

Shockey had 3 catches for 33 yards today in another Giants win.The Giants are now 10-4 and looking good for the playoffs.I'm just frustrated because he is so close to that magical 1000 yard season.Let's hope he can have 2 good games to get over the hump!

This raises a good point and it is that sometime a great back or reciever or tight end is worth more to the team by NOT getting the ball to him... Shockey is that type of player...he will be a burden on a defense simply byforcingthem to dedicate more defensive assets to cover/contain him.. that is a great advantage .. the TE position is a very important position in the NFL and Shockey makes defenses have to account for him in a number of ways that limits what they can do elsewhere.. the NY Giantscoachesknow this and they are using him wisely....

he has 127 yards to go, with 2 games (at Washington and at Oakland) hopefully he will get that!

Seems the NFL is seeing a resurgence of Talented white tight
ends. Or they may have been there all along just not
utlilyzed.

They are definitely there. Most haven't been used correctly. I hope Garrett Mills and Johnny Harline will make it in the NFL. With those guys, plus a couple more in the next draft, good things might start to happen! I doubt it will be another 19 years before a white TE gets 1,000 yards, even if Shockey doesn't get it this year.

Regardless of stats, Shockey is one tough
*******. He knocks everyone over. I saw his first preseason
game ever against the Texans and WOW! I recall him against
Nebraska.

Shockey is 109 yards short going into the final game for 1000 receiving yards.Do you guys think he will make it there? My vote is yes.I think this is a huge game and Shockey will demand the ball.I will predict that he goes for around 120 yards and the Giants win.Go Shockey.Edited by: white lightning

I think it will be tough, but it is doable. Whitelightning, you are right that it is a big game, and I think he has a great chance of getting it.

I think they (the screw turners of the Caste System) will not let him
get 1000 yards. Hate to sound like a bummer, but letting a
white tight end get 1000 after 19 years is anathema to the league and
they will not allow it. I like Jeremy and wish him and the other
tight ends the best but a 1000 yard year is not going to happen
in this galaxy.

Jason Witten needed 97 yards going into the last game of '04 to reach 1,000. He was up to 981, then dropped a pass on the last play of the game that would have put him over the magic number.

It would be great to see Shockey end the drought. He's had at least 109 receiving yards in a game four times in his four year career, so the odds are not particularly good.
