Bloom is the son of a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother and was not raised as a Jew. Although still a college student, Jeremy has already experienced a unique athletic career. In June of 2003, he announced that he was giving up a potentially successful -- and likely lucrative -- career in freestyle skiing, to play football for the University of Colorado. That's it, though I never watched the show. Maybe if it came out today and was about a white family it would be called Four is Way Too Many. One of Dick's sons, Vince, is a broadcaster on the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. Who knows what happened to the rest of Van Patten family of actors.
Don...I just read yesterday on drudge that Leif Garrett(the oldest Van Patten son) got into some type of trouble with the law and is in jail. I believe it was some type of robbery and his mug shot was horrible. He looks like he's had a hard life.
There's a feature article about Bloom in the March Playboy. It makes quite a to-do about his looks and appeal to girls and women and his predilection of going shirtless as often as possible to show off his abs. Refers to him as a "metrosexual," let's pray the media doesn't make him into the American version of David Beckham.
As far as race, it comes up twice, once in a sterotypically anti-white way, the other in a way favorable to what we say here at CF. Here they are:

He displayed the kind of game-breaking speed associated with black NFL receivers such as the Washington Redskins' Santana Moss and the Carolina Panthers' Steve Smith, not white boys with names like Jeremy Bloom. Bloom's agent has already forgotten that Matt Jones was drafted as a WR in the first round just last year. Here's what Mel Kiper says about him in the Playboy article: "I expect Bloom to go as high as the third or fourth round. He has tremendous instincts and vision, plus quickness and leg strength that he got from skiing to break tackles. He can catch the ball, he's a dynamic return man, and he's electrifying in the open field." I can't recall Kiper or any other corporate media "expert" ever calling a white athlete "electrifying" before.
Don't recall if anyone's mentioned this before here, but the article also mentions that Bloom won the 2003 "SuperStars" competition, during which he beat Ahman Green and Charlie Garner in the 100 yard dash.

Good stuff Don. The Superstars competition has been mentioned a couple of times here. He not only beat those guys, but smoked them. He ran the 100 yd in 9.4 sec and I think Green was second at around 9.6 sec. That is near world class sprinter speed for a guy that has probably never seriously trained for a sprint at that distance. He is going to turn some heads at the combine.
Don't like the "metrosexual " crap, But great post. When a big time Caste guy like Mel Kiper says this guy is "electrifying"..then there is something special about bloom. I wonder if a gold medal will increase his draft prospects because of the publicity.

He'll be competing tomorrow I believe, then flying back to the US to prepare for the combine. Good luck to Jeremy, win the gold for the US then come and blow away the NFL scouts!

Weird van Patten digression but I liked it! Vince van Patten was the ATP Rookie of the Year in '79. He also had a winnig record against McEnroe having beat him twice. Highest ranking was 26th in the world. National paddle tennis(whatever that is) champ in 1999.
Along with the other hyped U.S. skiers, Bloom disappointed today finishing the moguls competition in 6th place. Toby Dawson was the only American in the medals with a bronze. Onward to the NFL, let's hope he has a more successful combine result.Edited by: SteveB

This will make him even hungrier to prove himself in the nfl.He has admitted that his first love has always been football anyway.Now he can prove it just like he did at Colorado.It's amazing that his first punt return and first pass reception in Div.IA both went for long touchdowns.Anyone who doubt his speed will be left looking at his heels!
