Jared Connaughton is approaching his start time today in the 100-metre men's
sprint at the Canadian track and field championships with a calm heart.
He should.
This year's edition in Calgary is Connaughton's sixth appearance at the
nationals.
The New Haven native finished second in the 100 metres last year in 10.28
seconds, his fastest finish at the Canadian championships and comes into today's
preliminaries as the third-seed with a qualifying time of 10.21 set recently in
Florida.
He's also a two-time Canadian 200-metre champion, including last year, and
has the Canadian championships' 200-metre record of 20.34 set in 2008.
"I wouldn't say (I'm approaching this) necessarily any different than the
past. I won't let the meet overwhelm me. I'm not concerned with defending any
titles,"Â Connaughton said Wednesday from Calgary. "And it's not necessarily
(preparation) for the Olympics. It's really a big time stepping stone for the
world championships in August (in South Korea)."
Connaughton runs in the 100-metre semifinals today at 9:30 p.m. AT.
The final is Friday at 9:40 p.m.
The 200-metre preliminary is Saturday at 3 p.m.
The event final is Saturday at 6:35 p.m.

Jared won two silver medals at the national champs last weekend but he was disapointedbecause he had leg cramps the whole weekend and it killed his times. if he goes there, i see him do the final in 200m
i think in berlin he sould have qualified to the final but got disqualified because he stepped on a line, not sure, but i think it's in berlin
edit: he was disqualified in quarter finals, but he won his quarter finals i think, so he sould have been semi finalist, and i remember that it looked pretty easy for him

Do you have a link to the results. Very good time for JayConn. It's been a while since he has run that fast over the half lap. Maybe it is a sign of things to come. I thought he raced too much early spring last year and he looked burned out by June to July. This season he seems to have adjusting his racing schedule other than a relay or two. Good luck to Jared this summer.

His 100 meter sprinting as always been enigmatic. But he is a consistent 200 meter runner who could make a major final if the cards break right. I think he just has better pace judgement in the deuce.

All I can say is a 20.31 is smoking fast. I will have to look it up but I am pretty sure that is his fastest 200 meters ever and he is only 23. I don't believe even Wariner ran that fast. Its nice to see our guys getting better usually during a time they regress.
